Warpland Fantasy

The Setting

The stories all agree the world was very different before the Incident; Humanity had the planet tamed and were exploring the mysteries of reality. Some say humanity was despotic and reckless, destroying the world and each other. Other sources claim things were a veritable utopia, with plenty for all and lacking the constant conflict of today. Whatever the truth was, the world since 2100 has changed. Strange material left behind from a disaster long ago plagues the abandoned wastelands know as warplands, creating things of both fantasy and nightmare. You yourself have been accused of becoming warp-tainted and have been exiled from your home. The world outside the fortified city states is uncivilized and dangerous. What will you make of your new world?

Welcome to my latest RP, Warpland Fantasy! This game will focus a lot on transformation and corruption, you won't be able to grow much without risking a bit of your humanity. Starting off things will be a bit of a futuristic apocalypse, but the Warp that will change you can create many strange things and you may find yourself in a seemingly new world depending on where you explore. Please create a post with character that is starting off as a mostly mundane human though:

Basic Mechanics

Beating challenges will work on a gambling based system, each point in a stat represents a 6-sided die that you can bid to attempt to control a scene in some way. For example, say are running from a scary monster and have to leap across a huge gap blocking your path? In your post where you describe your attempt to leap across the chasm, you should include the text "Bid: physical 1" What this means is that you are risking one of your physical points to guarantee that you make your jump safely. I will assign a difficulty to whatever you are describing and roll for it in my response, this will look like this: Difficulty 3, you rolled: 4 So in this example you will safely make your jump with no penalties. Keep in mind that every die that fails to meet the required difficulty will represent exhaustion or injury and be temporarily unavailable for use until a time where you can rest and recover somewhere safe, but also, the more you succeed the more you will gain. Don't be afraid of a little bit of failure~.

Beyond bidding feel free to free form RP whatever you like, but keep just blatantly giving yourself things may result in reality (me) warping things to mess with you.

Improvement and corruption

How do you get better, and what should you fear. As in real life, often times the best way to improve is to fail a bit at first. Often failure will result in consequence that will alter your character's body/mind in ways that are both hazardous and helpful. This changes are represented with corruption dice occasionally I will instruct you to add things to your ability point tracker after failures (or sometimes even successes) such as: Add +1 physical and +1 giant claws Any change listed this way is a change to the total number and is not temporary, and anything that is not one of the base three abilities is a corruption. Like with your other abilities, you may bid a corruption point on anything that is applicable, so if you are slashing up bad guys with your giant claws you may bid your giant claw points as well as physical points. However, keep in mind that if your maximum corruption points ever exceed your current unspent base points, you will lose your humanity to the warp and (probably?) lose your character. So do try to keep those mutations in check.

Background info: Exile was an ironic fate for Vale, given the role she had to play in exiling others before her. Prior to her exile, Vale was part of her city state's secret police. While the authoritarian arm always had a public face to keep the masses in line, Vale and other operatives like her were specially selected for their discretion, dedication and ability to pry information from potential dissidents with words and guile rather than strength and firepower. With her charms and a tongue skilled in more ways than one, Vale found rumours of discontent and warp taint that would have otherwise kept themselves hidden long enough to become a potential problem for the security of her home. Information she brought to light led to the exile of many a potential threat, and the quiet disposal of many more.

Perhaps it was in thanks to her years of service that Vale got to keep her life when one day her investigations crossed the wrong man. One of the city state's own people of power was hiding their involvement in illegal research into the effects of material from the warplands on low-value citizens and convicts. Their private labs had already suffered a containment breach that resulted in much of the team involved needing to be 'purged' and represented a risk to the city's security and integrity. Yet when Vale attempted to bring this to light, she found just how little power and influence she actually had compared to those of the ruling class.

She was 'disappeared' for a time, as the man in question tried to bribe and torture and drug her into changing her reports and confessing to being incorrect. She tried to feign submission, going so far as to grovel, please and share a bed with this man, yet when it mattered most her powers of deception seemed to finally be failing her. When it finally became clear he would never let her off either the literal or metaphorical leash he had her on, she stopped pretending to give in, and not long after that she was suddenly 'found'. Found, of course, by doctors that reported her tainted with falsified reports, resulting in her swiftly being exiled before she had a chance to tell the truth to anyone that might have actually listened.

(Let me know if there are any issues or you want me to change anything)

Background info: Nova comes from an especially brutish city state known as Thunder City that was built up around the remains of a large military base. In the years since the fall Thunder City has evolved to be a rather hard but mostly meritocratic society, best described as a fusion between the concept of ancient Rome at it's peak and a setting of Mad Max style despotic warlords. One can claim their place at the top of the city's hierarchy if they have the ambition, drive, and charisma to do so, however not everyone is equal in circumstance. As such like many places, the powerful tend to stay powerful, and poor stay subjugated and weak. While that is true for most however people do climb and fall from power frequently enough, a but a few hundred instances a decade in a city of well over a hundred thousand hardly makes for equal playing fields. Everyone fights for what they have in order to survive and take care of those they care for.

Nova was hardly blessed with incredible circumstances when she was born. Not the poorest mind you, but not far off. She was eventually taken in by a gladiator house when she was a child. She was trained to fight, and provide amusement for those of powerful upper classes even as a child. As she grew older though she eventually became a great beauty, and much to both her relief and frustration she barely spent any time in the traditional gladiator circuit before she was transferred to the submission circuit that ran parallel to regular gladiator games. The submission circuit was much safer overall, only very rarely ending in death, but at the cost of becoming a sexual spectacle. Beautiful women and men both were made to fight each other and dominate the loser. Other times they were made to fight beasts or animals, where the results of defeat were often the same. Luckily Nova largely excelled at this, and very rarely lost. She became popular, her fiery attitude and aggressive fighting style earning her many fans, and with it came rewards and comforts that kept her motivated to keep fighting, demeaning as it often was. She learned to live with it, and even enjoy it to a degree. She was good at it after all, so rarely saw the downsides.

Naturally however, the more popular one becomes in such a environment the more one becomes a target themselves. One of her rivals envied her success, and soon that success built into hatred and resentment after being defeated by Nova many times. In desperation for a victory, or to at least take Nova out of the picture, this rival had shard of incredibly potent warp infused material forged into the tip of one of her swords. Submission match swords were hardly sharp mind you, but it wouldn't need to be to do it's job. The match came and went, and Nova defeated her rival as usual, but she managed to just barely scratch Nova's cheek with the tip of her sword and that was enough. When Nova woke the following day her eyes had changed to be like a feline's eyes, and even in Thunder City no one, not even the most powerful, were immune from exile when such an obvious mutation had taken place. She was exiled the same day, thrown out of the city with nothing. No food, no water, no weapons, no clothing. Nothing.

(Looking forward to playing!)

Background info: The City of Twilight, a large city built within the remains of an old gambling city filled with tall and large buildings and is active all hours, especially at night. This city was rather well off, a well defended city on the outer perimeter and inside was a city full of activity filled with gambling halls, brothels, clubs, markets, and more, all illuminated by neon lights. It is a city of pleasures of all kinds, whether the pleasures of the flesh, of showtime entertainment, or exotic tastes; something for everyone whether one that lives there or a visiting traveler. The city was mostly controlled by the rich, the ones that owned the popular businesses or the trade companies, with a mayor that was more than willing to take their bribes. There were darker elements though, such as slave and illegal goods trades that guards tended to turn blind eyes to, a black market that was probably the city's worse kept secret. The only sin that seemed to be looked down on in public light was being warp-tainted... aside warp-tainted slaves kept behind the most secured closed doors.

There was another side though, one that the guards also didn't turn an eye from; thievery. Within the city was an organization of thieves that stole from all the rich within the city. They kept to that shadows that even the bright neon lights didn't even illuminate or within plain sight but being unseen and leaving no trace. There was no real leadership within the organization, just spoken rules such as not to steal from the struggling poor or get the organization in any trouble. Part of the reason the rich that ruled the city didn't band together to take out the thieves is because the rich themselves would hire these thieves to hinder their competitors, and the thieves were more than willing to take their money to take from another rich bastard.

Scarlet was one such thief, and a rather skillful one at that. There was almost no job she couldn't do, whether it was stealing from a bank's most guarded safe or a casino owner's most treasured possession. Her acrobatic skills were top notch, able to quickly scale a building's walls with ease and sneak past the most alert guards. She knew all the tools of the trade too, such as lockpicking, slight of hand, disguise, infiltration, and even seduction. Scarlet didn't particularly like seduction, but she had the looks and the charm to pull it off but usually worked to well and ended up in the bed of quite a few but the upside was it also got her out of some bad situations when discovered.

With her high success rate though, she stole from many powerful people and the envy of other thieves. Eventually this lead to one enraged victim of hers and a jealous thief to plot against her... One day she got a good tip of a valuable object and how to get to it, but it was a trap. While she had fallen into traps before she was usually able to get away, but this time was different because it was made specifically for her. Scarlet ended up captured and was unsure what fate awaited her. Death would not be her fate though, and after many nights spent in a dungeon at the mercy of the jealous thief and the baron she stole from, they gave her small exposure to the taint and turned her over to the local law. Being tainted, which now showed to a rabbit tail growing from her backside, she was exiled with nothing more than some rags and very little ways to reach her contacts from the city to give her supplies or a definitely none that will give her a way back in.

(Alright, that took me a good while; I normally don't make backgrounds anywhere close to this long. Anyways, let me know if any changes need to be made or any suggestions you have.)

this sounds interesting, I may seek to write something up. The hard part is trying to figure out what character (and to resist just making use of my persona x.x)

A query- Since it is futuristic but also post-apocalypse, what sort of gear would be appropriate? and any preference on gender/sexuality?

As far as great goes, if it exists now it is likely commonplace for civilized areas, stuff you’d see in Xcom, like energy weapons and plasma stuff, that’s pretty rare and valuable, and finally anything that’s probably be out of cyberpunk that would only exist in like powerful secret labs speed by a powerful group. I have no preference on what gender or sexuality you want to play.

So now that Nova has gotten some bloodlust Ive noticed you've added it under her stats. Is that like a special die that I can bid on stuff? Maybe certain situations that would make sense for someone having a bloodlust?

Also, is it okay for us to bid more then one die on stuff? Or are we just keeping it to one to keep this fairly straight forward?

Edit: never mind, just read that last bit in the initial post again. I think I got it!

Yeah, keep in mind that you can use multiple die at once, including any corruption die if they are applicable. The only drawback to using more is that you’ll lose more, but if you really want to succeed something you got to use those stats

Not sure if I used a mental die as it's meant to be used but... it made sense when I was writing it!

Quick question, for things like pickpocketing, hiding stuff, stealth, and most other thief related things, which ability point would I typically bid? I assume physical but I want to be sure.

*nods* gotcha

I think I'll look over the CS's here and the game thread first then figure out what sort of character I want to go with (if I have too much trouble figuring something out I'll just use my persona as an easy fallback :P) Let me know if that'll be a problem at all!

Probably won't have anything up tonight though since am at work but by Monday morning I should!

So for a lot of “thief” things, it can vary between physical and mental. Palming something under someone’s nose would be physical, but just looking for a really good hiding spot would be mental. I would also say any fine motor activities are also mental, like picking a lock or disarming something. But acrobatics and quick escapes are physical.

Definitely any kind of perception based action or trying to figure out how something works would be mental. Tbh there’s no real hard and fast rule for how to use you die, bit if you try something silly like “I use my knowledge of fungus to try and scare this guy from attacking me” that’s probably going to be a diff 6 check there

Background info:
Within the walls of the fortified City-State of Eleria, the people did everything they could to try and emulate and maintain a society akin to that of the early 21st century, a period the founders of the city-state thought to be the best time of the century, far removed from the troubles of the incident that changed everything. Those born at the top had it made, those in the middle were able to live decent lives, and those at the bottom did what they could to scrape by each week. While it was possible to climb up the social ladder, the higher one sought to rise up the more cutthroat and competitive things became. And some were willing to do just about anything to deal with those who got in the way of their own march to the top. And their are others who seek to do everything they can to keep those they thing don't belong amongst them in their place.

Kayin was born into a family in the middle, and proved to be friendly and bright. She made friends easily, at least until her later schooling where her mind helped her to get ahead of several others like her vying for the chance to study with the best of the best at Eleria's Institute for Gifted minds. Despite being bright, Kayin was a bit naive to just how intensely cutthroat the competition for such could be. It wasn't that she wasn't aware of it, as her parents had told her stories of such things. But it was more that she had never seemed to make any enemies in her life, and so didn't think she'd be considered a target.

Unfortunately, her scores were showing that it was very possible she could be one of the select few allowed to enter the hallowed halls of the Institute. And that was too much for a few of the other potentials. As it so happened, they would find an ally in a professor who wanted to make sure this year saw only potentials from the highest echelons of the city made it in. A little pouch of warp-tainted powder placed in an prank letter, and the morning of the Entrance Exam, Kayin popped open the letter from an anonymous sender wishing her luck on the exam. Only to get a faceful of tainted powder.

The effect was immediate, but Kayin didn't realize something had happened until after she had left her home. Getting accosted by the police after numerous people had noticed the simple but obvious change that made it clear she had been tainted by the warp. The whites of her eyes were gone, leaving her bright blue eyes in a sea of inky black. The fact that said blue turned red when angry, as was her initial response to suddenly being grabbed brought about.

She was given no chance to explain her situation. No chance of appeal. Like many others, Eleria was harsh to any who showed signs of the warp. She was stripped of her family name, and exiled from the city. She wasn't even given a chance to see her family before she was dragged off and away.

I didn't see a PC with mental as their stat, so went with that.

Let me know if I need to tweak anything~! Or if I should do a different character~! Not sure how would be included in at current but am also in no rush!

I just replied, but just to be sure. You had Mitch come sit down next to Nova and talk to her, but that seems like more of a Crake thing, doubly so since Mitch is apparently cooking. Did you mean that to be Crake by any chance talking to Nova?

I've responded as if it was Mitch, but I can edit it easily enough if you did mean to make that Crake.

Edit: I knew it! All good though. I'll edit my post as if it's Crake asking!
