Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Name: Hisamatsu Tomohiko
Gender: Male
Age: 20
Appearance:[spoiler]Image

[spoiler]Biography: Born the youngest son to a proud but impoverished line of samurai dating back hundreds of years, Tomohiko had little to look forward to in terms of inheritance or station for most of his life. Taking pride in his family's name regardless, he diligently worked to make them proud through force of arms where he could not in matters of political elbow rubbing or monetary matters. Having recently celebrated his coming-of-age ceremony, the young warrior, now officially a samurai, set off from his home in search of glory (and to give them one less mouth to feed) befitting their ancient history, and to make a name for himself from beneath the shadow of such an (fairly unimportant) legacy.

It's the year 1503, in the land of the Rising Sun, under the reign of the Ashikaga Shogunate and the divine emperor Go-Kashiwabara, in the midst of summer. The times have been a little calmer lately, as the warring clans of Japan have had to deal with a lot of upheaval after many of the supernatural and underworld realms have more or less had what you'd describe as a collective, trans dimensional seizure. Oni began rampaging out of the underworld, looking for booze, women, men and a good fight most of all. Yokai such as kitsune, kappas and tsukumogami became actual things and hazards, and perhaps most upsetting of all, dogs and cats had started living together.

Mass hysteria.

Still, chaotic times mean that it's a good opportunity for a wandering lower class samurai lookin' to make a fortune, and that's why you're in the city of Edo, which got fucked up pretty badly by an earthquake a couple of years ago and is currently in the process of rebuilding. There's a lot of laborers here, naturally, and a lot of businesses that cater to them. Drinking and gambling halls, police departments, brothels and food carts are everywhere, and of late, the ever needed Onmyōji and their yojimbo bodyguards, helping the human townsfolk deal with the nightly hijinks of the yokai and other supernatural creatures when they decided to run amok.

Looks like this'll be as good a place to start your journey as any.

Finally coming upon a proper town after traveling for so long brought much needed relief to Tomohiko; though he has more than confident in his own abilities, the gossip of the common folk about demons this and spirits that had put him on edge. Not to mention the stress of having to sleep on the road like some kind of ronin of all things. But now that he was in civilized lands once more, he could finally begin building his legend among the downtrodden folk of Edo! Of course, he had little idea where to go to do such a thing. Edo Castle was the likeliest place, though he certainly couldn't just show up on the doorstep of a local lord asking if his services were needed looking like some half-starved, unwashed peasant!

So, as the young samurai made his way through the gates, he decided to find some lodgings first. A hearty meal, a good wash and a soft futon to rest in while he got his bearings would do him a world of good. Of course, he was never very good with directions... but that didn't stop him before and it wouldn't stop him now!

Finding your way through the city is a little troublesome at first. A lot of the townsfolk keep a respectable, almost wary distance from you as you pass by them and vice versa. It's most likely just standard caution around an unfamiliar samurai, but after about an hour you find yourself close to a decent if somewhat worn down looking inn with a kid out front. Little tyke seemed to be the place's crier and advertiser.

"Hey, honorable samurai! You like you've been travelin' a lot! Wanna come in out of the sun and eat?" the kid calls out to you as he waves excitedly, drawing bemused glances from some of the guests that you could see through the door, from the smell of things, the meal of the day was fried fish and rice, a cheap meal, but it went well with a bit of warm sake and sat nice and heavy in the stomach. The building had a second story as well, which was probably where the guest rooms would be. You'd probably have to ask about baths, but that was to be expected.

"If you come in and tell my sister and grandpa I sent you, you can have a free cup of sake too! Whaddya say?"

Well shit, free sake?

The distance of the commoners didn't particularly bother Tomohiko; he was a proper samurai, after all. It was good for them to show their respect for someone as venerable as he. Of course, veneration did little to fill an empty stomach, and he could practically feel his stomach receding on itself from the midday hunger. It was a small blessing he stumbled upon the inn when he did, mouthy kid or not.

"Suppose I don't have much to lose." He mused to no one in particular, peeling away from the crowds so he could make his way past the crier and into establishment. He pushed aside the curtains and ducked inside, looking around for any free seats he could content himself with while he waited for the a waitress and of course, the promised sake.

The place was fairly empty, just a few regulars who were lazing about, ducking their foreman most likely, so you had more or less your pick of places. A cute looking waitress approaches you once you've sat down and settled in, giving you a respectful bow before speaking.

"Hello, welcome to our inn, honorable samurai!" she begins, her speech a little stilted but quite polite. She probably just isn't used to dealing with upper class folks. "I heard you speaking with my brother outside, would you like your sake cooled or heated, and before or with your meal?" she offered, giving you a nice looking smile.

She's not bad looking overall for a common girl. Her kimono is simple and dull orange in color, but they go well with the small scattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose and the brown eyes she's sporting. Her black hair is largely hidden under the binding she's wearing, with just a little bit of it peeking out.

"Our main dish for today are fried fish and rice, the former being freshly caught from the river, and the latter was just shipped in two days ago, we can also provide dumplings and vegetables, if you prefer."

You can hear some of the usual commotion die down outside a bit, it might just be from you being indoors now though.

Settling in on a cushion after a long morning of walking did well to raise Tomohiko's spirits. Almost as much as the sight of the waitress appearing did. Far was he from lecherous, of course, but... well, what twenty year old didn't like a pretty girl waiting on them? It was entirely natural! Plus, it was rather cute how she stumbled to properly address someone of his station. He did her the kindness of the most charming smile his fine features could muster, if only to put her at ease.

"Chilled with the meal, please." He said, undoing the knot which held his sword to his sash and placing it to the side. He tried his best to contemplate the choice of meal thoughtfully, but thinking of oily fish and steamy rice only got his stomach rumbling again. Somewhat embarrassed by the noise, he coughed awkwardly.

"I uh... think I'll take all of the above, if you don't mind."

Your smile causes the girl to look demurely down from your eyes and towards your mouth instead, a flustered look on her face as she offers a second, short bow in confirmation.

"As you wish, honored samurai! It will be prepared shortly!" she promises, quickly darting away to the kitchen, where you can faintly hear her talking to what sounds like an older man, before the clattering of dishes begins inside.

As you wait, you can hear a new commotion starting and getting closer, and before long the kid who was acting as the crier runs back inside, a panicked look on his face as he sprints passed you and the other guests, a sure breach of etiquette for one such as you, but the pale look on the boy's face says that he's not just doing this out of absentminded rudeness, and it's not difficult to pick up at least some of what he's saying to the people in the kitchen.

"It's the Tekiya, they're comin'!" you can hear the kid state hurriedly, and while you can't quite make out what the girl from earlier is saying, you can tell she's trying to not appear scared in front of him.

And then they arrive.

Three men, wearing black and grey clothing in a loose fashion to show off their upper bodies, all carrying weapons at their sides. two of them don't have swords, but the clubs and daggers and the casual way they're wearing them indicates the willingness to use violence. The leader of them, a lean, mean looking dude however has a katana, a guardless one with rags wrapped around the hilt. He takes a look at you and then towards the kitchen entrance, ignoring you as he and his boys go passed and to the doorway, with the boss leaning in.

"Hey! Ya got customers in here, whatcha doin' in there?" he asks, the tone he's giving more demanding and accusatory than questioning.

It took a fair amount of self-control not to let a goofy grin overtake his features when the waitress became flustered by his efforts, but he managed well enough, watching her disappear into the back to get his much needed meal. Left to his own devices, Tomohiko absentmindedly hummed to himself, though even over his humming he could hear some form of racket coming from outside. Watching the young lad from earlier scramble past him, he raised a brow in curiosity. Such curiosity was quickly sated, as a group of toughs came barging into the peaceful establishment a few moments later. He looked each of them up and down, judging their capacity and character as best he could. He wasn't exactly an investigator, but even he could see that this was a different form of racket than the kind that assailed one's ears.

Which caused him to once again test the limits of his own poise; real low-lives coming to accost the peasantry right in front of him! This was the type of thing people wrote songs about, brave samurai defending those who could not defend themselves in the name of the Emperor! He tried his best to remain muted in the background as they demanded the proprietors appear from the back, not out of fear of them, but because he needed to think of something cool to say to get their attention! Hammy as his need for a one-liner may have been, the fledgling samurai at least had the presence of mind to place his sword on his left hand side; all the better for a quick draw.

The act of grabbing his treasured blade sparked inspiration in him, and only moments after he set it down, he spoke up, loudly enough to be heard by the goons across the way but not so loud as to appear particularly bothered by their presence.

"That sword you've got has seen better days. They say a weapon mirrors its owner; a poor blade for a poor man."

The leader of the bunch paused and glanced back at you, an annoyed glare making his rough features look even more ugly than before. You can hear movement behind the curtain, but the owners of the establishment are probably too frightened to get involved in an argument between armed men.

"Yeah well, not all of us have had the luxury of a rich mommy and daddy to lend us their swords. If you wanna change that, though, I might have an idea on how you can change these poor circumstances..." he says, leaving the doorway and approaching your seat. "Tell ya what, we can swap. Your sword for mine." he offers, drawing his katana slowly and holding it in one hand, by his right side. The state of the blade would probably leave it's maker in tears honestly, the edge looks like someone's been smashing it into rocks and trees with how jagged and busted up parts of it are, but still, it would certainly intimidate the average farmer or town laborer, with it's saw like features.

"Course, I'm gonna have to ask for a trial period with yours, for maybe a day or two."

As he says this, his buddies are quietly moving around your flanks, potentially to jump you from your blind spots, however you can see that at least one of the laborers who were eating here has quietly picked up the heavy jug of sake he was sharing with his friends, his eyes fixed on the closer of the two goons.

Being outnumbered was never a good situation for even the most skilled warriors, though Tomohiko figured his odds were good enough if the nearby laborers decided to step in and take some revenge of their own. Deciding to let some level of his cunning overtake his bravado, the young samurai flashed the glorified bandit a soft smile, perhaps hoping to use his boyish looks to lull him into a false sense of security. He reached down to grab the sheathed blade on the floor beside him.

"How kind of you, to offer an exchange of blades. Of course I'll accept your sword." He raised his weapon up off the flooring as he said as much.

"Here, have mine."

Muscle memory of a thousand sword draws practiced under his father's gaze, Tomohiko rose from the floor in a single swift motion and pulled his sword free from its scabbard in a flash of gleaming steel. It cut a sharp arc towards the thug's right side, the first few inches of the curved blade aimed to scythe through his wrist and quite forcibly collect his own armament and the hand holding it. Regardless of its success, he was acutely aware of his position after such an action, and so he rapidly brought the blade back to his side, but rather than sheath it as quickly as he had drawn, his next step was to thrust the weapon between the gap at his left side and arm; a move meant to impale one of the would-be attackers who maneuvered into his blind spot.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Sorry bout the wait man, been job hunting and dealing with shitternet cables

The "samurai"'s eyes widen and he stumbles backwards, his own sword pulled out halfway as your blade trails a red line along his torso! Judging by the feel of resistance, you weren't quite able to get into organ tissue, but you've definitely cut along his abdominal muscles!

"Motherfucker!" he swears, fully drawing his sword as his friends close in, trying to mob you before you could go for another attack. However, they didn't appear to have taken your plan into account, as the thug on the left takes your sword right in the gut, spearing himself onto it with both of your momentum and his own weight, a strangled, anguished cry escaping his mouth as he falls, nearly taking your sword with him. Your sense the one on the right coming at you with his cudgel and manage to duck forward somewhat to avoid the worst of it, but he lands a glancing blow on your head, behind your ear, and you can feel blood trickling from the gash it's left. Not deep, but you won't want to sleep with that side of your head on the pillow for a few days. The goon grabs for your kimono, but that jug of sake from earlier comes flying, striking his shoulder and shattering, spreading strong smelling liquor onto you, the thug and his boss before a big laborer comes charging, tackling him and sending both himself and the goon tumbling to the floor! Worst part is, you can feel some of it get in that gash you'd gotten before, and suddenly it starts stinging like crazy!

You can see the kid rushing out of the door in the midst of the chaos, shouting for the dōshin, the low ranking samurai police! Chances were good that this place was going to be swarmed soon!

You can make out the peasant girl and an old man peeking from behind the curtain, fearful and worried, but unsure what to do. Going by the old man's age, he probably couldn't move well, hence her staying behind.
