Undertakings in the Underrail, now with ratburgers (Ocfos)

Postby Mashugana » Wed May 06, 2020 11:05 pm

Character (might need tooling around with, this is kind of a wing it deal folks)
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Name: Nellie Tatiana Samotara
Species: Shrelling
Age: 26
Height: 154cm/5'1
Weight: 45kg/100lbs
Body type: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/ ... nknown.png
Appearance (possibly needs to be added later):
Species Description: A race of colourful squid-humanoids with a venomous bite, their hue reflecting what type of venom they carry, which can vary heavily. Their heads typically have two long tendrils in the shape of tentacles hanging down, which can be moved about and has powerful suction cups on the end. Their 'hair' is kind of spongy to the touch, if not a bit slimy. They can change shape into a strange gooey substance, which they're seemingly in control of. They have odd triangular ears, three fangs (Two top, one bottom), and are typically not taller than 5'9". The Shrelling are excellent swimmers, and their fingers are slightly webbed (to the first joint), and can stay submerged for a while due to gills along their sides, which are only easy to see whilst submerged. Their biggest weakness is acid, as not even their gooey form can save them from more intense pain and/or disfigurement than most other species - This is speculated to be because of their heavily PH-basic oceans. Their gooey-looking hair, as well as their gooey shapes, both taste of the same things, but these can wary wildly from sweet to savory, or even sour tones. It is unknown why this is the case.

Tricks/feats/mutations:
Nellie can turn into a malleable gooey squid shape (Or other shapes), but is still just as affected by attacks as she normally would be, as she's still herself, even inside the pink gooey slime she becomes.
It isn't possible to see through it, the residue left behind has a curious taste of red berries, as does any of her bodily juices (as well as her actual goo shape and her hair (both head and groin), if someone really wanted to lick it).
Nellie also has a paralytic venom, most effectively delivered via bite. She may also spit a weaker variant which is effective if ingested. She is unaware of how it may interact with alien physiology...

Flaws: Short tempered, headstrong, cocky

friends.
Eventually, she ended up with an interest in firearms and tried doing some repair work at a local mechanic's workshop, leaning a slight bit about repairing engines and such, even if it was a rough learning curve.
Her interest in firearms only grew, as gang wars started drawing closer to her home town, where she eventually listed into the local peacekeeper force to try and help protect her home from the chaos drawing nearer. Then The End occurred, and she was forced to scramble down to the depths of the planet along with anyone else who managed to avoid the mass death, calamity and insanity that followed.

STATS:
STR: 3
DEX: 6
AGI: 7
CON: 5
PER: 5

It's been a rough couple years since what some referred to as the End Times, others called the Flash, and most simply call the most fucked up thing to happen to the planet occurred. You've been living as best you can in the wake of the destruction of the surface world. It hasn't been easy, and you may not have been entirely proud of everything you've done, but hey, you're in one piece, and that's more than what quite a few people could say. Even better, you've even managed to get into South Gate Station, one of the best places to live right now if the rumors are true. It's got running water, regular food supplies, and you've only got a small chance of getting knifed by some junkie for the shoes you're wearing or eaten alive by a psychic beetle from what you've heard. The trials to get in were hard as well, testing your physical abilities, your mental acumen, and every skill you've developed before and after the apocalypse, but you've made it, and now you're in the colony.

Of course, a colony like this doesn't run on dreams and friendship, you're expected to work for what you've got, and as you rest in your new quarters, with your own personal computer, desk, a small table and chair and a twin bed, the intercom linked to your room crackles to life.

"Hey, Tanimura. Likin' the new digs? The boss man's asking after you, wants to see if you're ready to stop by the office for your first job." comes a feminine, if somewhat low voice over the static of the intercom.

You recognized the voice, it was Katrin, the chick who helped you file your citizenship papers. If you remembered it right, she was more or less the right hand woman of Caleb, the guy who was more or less in charge of the station. He'd be on the fifth floor down by elevator, below your floor and the canteen. It looked like it was time to start earning your keep.

Currently relaxing on her bed with a book, Nellie rolls over to answer the intercom once she hears the message.

"Tatiana hun, but I prefer going by my first name, 'Nellie'. That aside; Yeah, this place is much better than the drafty tunnels. Do you know what the job entails, or does he want to tell me by himself once I get down there?"

She asks the , having already put her book aside, and about to get ready to get dressed to leave for the meeting.

"Ah, sorry 'bout that, Tatiana. Boss man will probably give ya the more detailed version, but roughly speaking, it's probably gonna be about helping with the generators and getting you a gun. Seems that the rathounds have probably been fuckin' with the power supplies and fryin themselves lately. It's either that or helping out with that cave in."

You remembered an earthquake from a couple weeks ago, nasty thing that collapsed a lot of tunnels and caverns, cutting off some important trade routes and killing quite a few people in the chaos. The bigger ones still needed a lot of work to fix up. Potentially worse, some of the more twisted groups and critters from deeper below had even cropped up, creating more problems. Psi-beetles, cultists, giant eels, and even worse things.

Nellie gets a shirt on, with a jacket on top of it, accenting her sweats well. She wishes the tunnels would be warmer than they are, but at least she's not stuck in the near-constant blizzard topside.

"I'm hoping for the generators, but I guess we'll see. Be down there in a moment, Katrin, headin' out now." Nellie replies, as she exits her quarters to head down there.
She does make sure to at least lock up, before she heads for the elevator down.

The station you're living at has multiple floors, with the two towards the top being the "residential" area you're living in with small apartments and rooms for the inhabitants, the third being a cantina and bar where the food was actually pretty good fare, it even had daily specials most of the time. Fourth was administration and meeting rooms, where the "boss man" Caleb was usually found in his office when he wasn't out conducting or directing the work himself, fifth was the medical bay and research labs, sixth was the armory and "official" stores, and seventh was the floor connecting the station to the tunnels and caverns, where most of the station's militia were deployed day to day, and the station's agricultural section as well as impromptu small stores and stalls. Most of these were looked down upon by the residents of the station since the goods were often of unreliable quality, but there were some pretty rare finds there on occasion, like combat drugs and artifacts from the world before the bombs fell.

Entering the fourth floor by elevator, it only takes you a minute to make it to the office, with Katrin smiling and nodding as she opens the door to Caleb for you. Like you, Katrin is a Shrelling, but roughly in her low forties if you had to guess, with a much softer, more matronly body type than your own and wearing jeans, with a white shirt and jacket, contrasting nicely with her cherry coloring and business like bun.

The room Caleb works in is spartan in of itself, with just a dull grey carpet, a lamp and a desk with a computer on it, all of which looks almost comically small compared to the guy sitting there.

You're not really sure what Caleb is, but he's massive, possibly close to eight feet tall and about as broad as one can be. He's hairy and coarse, with a huge bushy beard and unkempt hair, and as he rises from his chair to greet you you can see his prosthetic leg flash for a moment at the ankle, and a large pistol at his waste.

"Hi Nellie. You doing alright with your quarters?" he greets politely, his voice a low, harsh rumble despite that as he shakes your hand. "Thanks for coming by so soon, wouldn't have called you in to work so soon if the quake hadn't happened, but well, we'll need some help with some generators, and you've got some mechanical and fighting skills that we'll probably need for this." he finishes, offering a chair for you to sit in if you like while he goes to his side of the desk and rummages through the drawers, drawing a large piece of paper out of it.

Arriving at her meeting point, Nellie is re-struck with just how big Caleb actually is- him being almost twice her own height. She listens, politely accepting the offer of a chair, though her respectful awe at the things he must have gone through, is slightly difficult to hide. Her hand does seem to give to his grip, despite her hand seeming perfectly Un-broken after it.

"Oh I love them; Much more preferable to any other alternative, that's for sure. I'm sure it'll feel far homelier given some time to settle in, since I've spent the better part of the last three or-so, being nothing more than a nomad down here." She snickers, listening to him further.

"Am I going on the trip with escort, or is there no risk of attacks on the trip? I'd rather not be ass-deep in machinery, and then feel a gun pushed at me. She is very animated with her arms as she speaks, though she seems very fine with the mission.
"On the topic of tools, I've already planned to save up some on the side, to buy myself a more personalised toolkit. Lost the few I had to a raiding party, a few weeks before arriving here."

She leans back a bit, resting her knee against the edge of the desk, "That's the future plans at least; Just to assure you I won't always need to use up a kit, which might be needed in the station itself."
She grins lightly, seeming quite positive about her immediate plans... That, or she's simply running her mouth at the moment. Time will tell.

Caleb nods and smiles at your response. "Yeah, might try some of the stalls then. I think a few of em' were selling posters and decorations." he says as he lays out the papers. Together, they appear to form a map, with a side entrance/exit that you hadn't known about before moving in here, as well as several blue squares within the caverns beyond. "There's a little bit of risk to it, since there's always a few rathounds who manage to sneak into this part, but it shouldn't be something that the gun you originally came here with shouldn't be able to handle. By the way, be sure to stop by the armory before you head out to get it back, plus something a little extra just to be safe. From what we can gather, some of our power's been cut off by the quake, most likely reason being that these-" he explains, pointing on the three blue squares. "Probably got knocked loose again. It happens from time to time. I'd send some of the usual guys in to take care of it, but a couple of them were injured by the quake and the others are tied up trying to unblock the tunnels so we can go through the safer routes rather than heading deeper in or going into Psy beetle territory. It shouldn't take anything fancy, just some pliers and screwdriver work to get em' back up. If you do this, I can slip you about five hundred bucks, and you can keep the extra piece you'll get from the armory. Deal?"

Caleb pauses for a moment, his expression going somewhat distant for a second before snapping back into focus. "Oh right, this one's just in case you're interested, but you might also wanna head down to the medical bay too, Doc Holland's been requesting you about some test results from the medical exam we had you take. It's not anything serious or life threatening, but might be of interest to you."

Nellie listens intently, nodding in agreement at his angle of handling things.

"So, simple fix? Sounds good to me, I'll get go it ASAP. Thanks for the added bonus, I'll make good use of it if some rathounds interrupt my trip."

She looks over the path she has to take, nodding a little whilst tracing it with her finger. "Yeah, this'll be no trouble. Let's hope the fix is as simple, so I won't have to make a second trip." She jokes, snickering a little.

She does get a little surprised at the last information, seeming slightly altered in her peppy mood by it. "Nothing bad, I'd hope.. Naw, I'll check by there first; Don't want to miss anything important."

She stands up, nodding respectfully at him. "Anything else, sir?" She asks, heading towards the medical bay right away, if he doesn't have anything else to tell her.

Caleb shakes his head, smiling in relief. "Nah, that's all. Thanks for takin' the job Nellie. If things get hairy don't hesitate to come back for help, and I'll be sure to let Holland know you're comin' down so he's ready for ya."

He follows you out long enough to ask Katrin to page Doc Holland as you leave, the receptionist giving you a short wave and mouthing good luck at you before both of them get back down to business.

After a couple minutes and some bad elevator music (seems like some things never change), you find yourself in the medical and research labs. You pass by the trauma center where wounded personnel and citizens are resting, a lot of them having been hurt by the cave in, and some still haven't woken up yet, but after asking a couple nurses you find doctor Holland coming out of a washroom, shaking his hands to clear off the last bits of moisture from washing them. He's a pretty normal looking older male Gallation, with a plantlike body and tendril like limbs, his flesh is a deep and dark green in color, with the "hair" on his head resembling broccoli, and his beard looking somewhat like moss. He smooths it out a bit when he sees you and smiles, nodding a greeting.
"Ah, hello miss Samotara, thank you for coming so soon! We've been going through some of the test results you gave us in your examination and found something quite interesting. Tell me, what do you know of psychic phenomena, and those who can cause those phenomena?" he asks with interest, seeming excited by what he wants to tell you.

"Thank you, Sir. It'll feel good to get myself back into the rhythm of things again."
As Nellie walks out, she gives a polite wave and a nod to Caleb and his receptionist.

After her arrival at the medical facilities, and asking her way around a few times, she spots Holland and returns his polite greeting.

"Hey Doc, I was told you wanted to see me?"
She barely gets her greeting out of the way, she listens intently to his question.

"...No, I can't say I'm familiar with us begin the psychic ones, just those beetles and that stuff. Why, what's up?" She asks, seeming a lot less nervous about it, now that she's assuming it isn't something negative. Assuming, being the key word.

She puts a hand on her hip, raising an eyebrow lightly in intrigue.

"Well, what if I were to tell you that you had the potential to do what the psy beetles can, miss Samotara?" the professor begins, starting to get that mad scientist style gleam in his eye. "You may in fact be able to do such things as alter thermal signatures, warp time and space, bend or break the minds of others, see the future or any number of other incredible things!"

You'd heard of psykers before, but they were rare enough (or at least most of them avoided broadcasting their powers) that it wasn't unheard of for a person to go their whole life without ever encountering a sapient psychic creature, and now you were being told that you of all people might be one of them!

Nellie's face twists into an expression of doubt and disbelief.

"No, really, why did you want to see me? I ain't buying that I can pull off those things. Most I can do, is liquify. I think I've already noted that part, in my test a few weeks ago."

She keeps her raised eyebrow, and skeptically amused expression. She crosses her arms, but seems more amused at the idea, than angry at the assumed joke.

"Got a pending task for Caleb, so I'm low on time for joking about." She chuckles, "Would've been one hell of a time though, wouldn't it?"

"I see that you'll need some convincing, but if you're busy, then we can table this for now." Holland says with a mildly frustrated and disappointed sigh. "Just know that what I'm telling you is very real, and if you wish to see it for yourself, then I'd advise seeing Jezamine, the woman who runs the canteen later. She can help show you the evidence."

However, after that he does straighten up some and excuses himself for a moment, before bringing you a small bag of goodies, a couple of medi-stims and some anti-biotics. "Take these for your time, they should assist you if you should be injured at least." he offers, seeming a little bit down. "I'll not keep you any longer, and I have to assist with the wounded at any rate. Good luck miss Samotara."

Nellie seems a little concerned, as she quite easily notices Holland's shift in mood, "Wait-That really wasn't a joke..? That's...Uh.. Not something I've actually experienced proof of before." She seems a little awkward, as she didn't actually mean to mock him.

"How would I be able to do that, though? Most I can do is..." She turns herself into a blob of slime, though generally managing to maintain her normal humanoid shape, after an initial moment of gravity taking hold. "This, as I think I showed off during the initial medical examination. I did, right?" She might not have visible 'eyes' in this shape, but it's easy to tell where her head is, as she isn't attempting to move herself into a different pose.

"Oh, uh. Sorry about the reaction at first, Holland, but it does all sound a little...too good to be true, y'know?" She chuckles slightly awkwardly, a 'hand' moving up to rub the back of her 'head'.

"Well to be honest, we're not entirely certain on all the mechanics of it." Holland admits, seeming to regain a bit of his vigor when you show more curiosity, guy was pretty emotional it seemed. "However, it's indeed possible that your ability to turn into a semi fluid form is a manifestation of psychic power on some level, utilized on your own body. Many creatures like the psi-beetles can utilize their own powers through simple instinct, so it could be the same way with your ability to turn into this form. On a side note, I imagine that's another reason you were picked out for your task, considering the cave in."

The professor pauses for a moment as a nurse calls out to him.

"Still, I realize this is a lot to take in, and even if you got the injection necessary to properly activate such potential, you probably wouldn't be able to do much with it at the moment, but please do consider it. I will admit that there are risks involved, and would warrant discussing this more thoroughly once we have time."

Nellie listens on, turning back to her regular form as he speaks. She does seem interested in what he's saying, even if she does appear slightly confused at the same time.
"Maybe, yeah. Though I assume the main reason, is that I'm a decent mechanic, and that I can hold my own to a degree."

She smiles a little, crossing her arms, "What kind of injection, are you talking about? Sounds odd to go to the canteen for such a thing, but that's why I'm not a doctor, or some kind of scientist.

"Oh no, the injection's done here. It's just that there's someone at the canteen can demonstrate psychic potential in sentient species." the professor explains. "I believe he's got some skill in temporal manipulation, Dan in engineering has some competence in thermals, and there's at least one other person, but... well, mental manipulation isn't exactly looked upon fondly. At any rate, there is a downside to the injection in that it could damage your physical abilities, the price of power and all that."

The professor coughs politely into his hand as you hear moans of pain coming from the med bay.

"It appears that I'll be needed soon, so if it's alright with you, you could come down after you're done with your work and we'll finish discussing whether or not you want the procedure."

With that, he makes his excuses to leave and hurries into the med bay, rolling his sleeves up to wash them and set about treating the sick and injured.

"Mental manipulation could be useful to interrogate criminals in a humane manner, but I guess it depends on what purposes they'd use it for." She shrugs lightly, nodding as they're interrupted by agony from another room.

"Tell you what; Sign me up for an appointment in a few hours then, I'm sure whatever it'll do for me, it could probably become fairly handy around here." She grins a little, fangs gleaming in the brightened clinic lights.

"I'll leave you to your work, Doc. See you in a few." She gives a polite nod, before she backs around to get herself ready to head out.

She starts to make her way towards the armory, now excited to see what guns she'll be getting her hands on, for the first time in a while.

The trip to the armory is fairly short, and you find yourself walking into an office that smells of old coffee, stale tobacco and burnt gunpowder. You see a short, squat humanoid fiddling with a handgun, cursing to himself quietly for a moment before he notices you approaching and stops, placing it on the desk.

"Ayy, good to see ya again Nellie! Welcome to Biggs-E's Armory!" he announces, waving a four fingered hand around the messy place with a gap toothed grin. You remembered this guy, he was the one who you gave your pistol too when you joined up. "Already got the word from up top about your job, normally it ain't such a big deal, but the boss man's worried about rathounds and such in the caverns, so he had me get a couple of extra things for ya, along with your old gun... er, speakin' of, what the hell WAS your gun supposed to be anyway?" he asks, pausing in thought as he gets up and goes to a steel door behind him, fumbling with the pass code lock situated next to it.

The weapon you'd first come in with had definitely seen better days, but this could be an opportunity to lie and get a newer, better one. On the other hand, if you were caught out here or later, things could turn out bad...

Nellie smiles back at his cheery attitude, not minding the scent of the office one bit, having had much worse in her past.

"Oh, I was given some gun that felt like it only had three shots left to go, before it'd fracture from metal fatigue." She jokes, (even if she's probably close to the truth) "Would've definitely preferred something less worn, but we're hardly given the choice in these tunnels, right?" She follows with a light chuckle.
"Wish fixing parts would make things last forever, but in my fielded experience, it eventually blows itself up."

She looks around the office from where she stands, not being one to pry about the code. "Been a while, since I've had the proper gear to work on guns myself. Kinda miss it, but at least things have been looking up, since arriving here."

She waits politely for him to look around, unless he asks her to come with. Mostly due to past security habits, but for the moment she's content to not upset others. Wouldn't want to make enemies, after barely getting settled again.

"I'm eager to see what else I get to bring along, since I don't plan on becoming something down here's dinner any time soon." She grins.
