Euphoria Labyrinth (DLaby inspired) (No demo) (3-May-18)

Postby x3Darkie » Fri Nov 10, 2017 11:02 pm

Yeah, about this. I don't know. I get the weirdest fucking ideas.

Just to get this out of the way, there's no playable demo yet. This is mainly to generate interest and discussion, this project may possibly never get off the ground and see the light of day (because I have like 3 other fucking projects to do sadjasldjwhatamidoingwithmylife?). But I figured I'd at least show what I have so far and see if people is interested in this and if I'd ever do this.
"There's no playable demo, why the fuck are you posting here instead of discussion, you scrub," I hear you say. Well, mainly because, non-flash forums has more traffic. Which is the entire point of me posting here because I want feedback and stuff. I also asked a mod and he said it was okay. So, yeah. (By the way, LoK has an unofficial LoK Discord channel. Come join us for all the funsies.)

Alright, with that out of the way, what is Euphoria Labyrinth? The most accurate way I could put it would be, "it's Despair Labyrinth but in modern times (technically near-future) with guns and shit instead of magic." And since it's sort of a spinoff/sequel to Despair Labyrinth, it's okay to rip off the every idea it has. I mean, I could just continue Despair Labyrinth myself since I quite enjoy that game (hence this abomination), but I don't like to take someone else's work and turn it into mine. At least not without express permission. But yes, Euphoria Labyrinth is basically Despair Labyrinth but with guns.

And now to introduce some of the characters I have planned. (Open the image in a separate tab to read the stuff. Part of it got cut off by the forums.)
Image

Mostly sketches right now, and 2 of these characters aren't done, so I literally can't show them yet. And yes, the engineer from Brazil is black. Because I would be racist if I don't include a black character in this day and age. That was a joke, I don't really care about pandering or to be "inclusive," I just like variety. I figure I should mention it since Despair Labyrinth didn't have a black playable character, or hell, even a tanned one. As for a side note, the reason the characters don't have their real names listed is because I haven't thought of them yet.

Now as for how these characters work in the context of gameplay, basically each character/class would have easier access to a particular part with their skillset. For example, the hacker would be able to spoof ID detector gates to allow one-time access, while the engineer would be able to disable the gate entirely, and since the soldier would have no applicable skillset, she would have to find some other way around without alerting security. In terms of combat, think Metal Gear, but with some other mechanics to make this into a h-game. Like enemies would grapple you and you'll have to escape, otherwise, a h-scene will trigger. You (and enemies) will have 2 separate health pools. One's normal health, which once it's fully depleted, u ded, game over. The other is stun health (term pending. I've thought of stun tracker, but that's more of a tabletop thing). Once depleted, instead of dying, you'll fall unconscious and trigger a h-scene instead. There's some other fluff like killing enemies will increase your threat level and enemies will get progressively stronger/more in numbers, so you'll have to choose between lethal and non-lethal approaches to combat and stealth.

For a quick rundown for each character:
Soldier: Faster reload, higher base health and stun health.
Hacker: Hack stuffs.
Spy: Lower base threat, easier grapple escape and enemy grapples.
Medic: Health recovery without items but with a cooldown, and higher health recovery with items.
Engineer: Mechanics stuff (a vague description because I don't have everything figured out yet), higher explosives weaponry damage and accuracy.
Scientist: No idea yet, feel free to chime in.

In terms of the possibility for new characters, I dunno, maybe? If I plan to have more characters, the next ones would have to be maybe a Chinese sharpshooter and a middle-eastern Egyptian (I was thinking Egypt, not the middle-east. Upon further research Egypt is apparently considered middle-eastern? Now I'm confused.) that's stealth based. I dunno.

As for the premise/setting of the game, it would be set somewhere around mid to late 2000s, technology has advanced to the point where gene enhancements are readily available and ammunition are all caseless now so please don't scream at me asking where the fuck is the ejection port on Eve's gun. The UN now includes literally every nation on Earth and generally has more power over each of its member states. Wars are non-existent, a unified currency, people are more tolerant of other cultures and beliefs, joint international military branches, etc. Basically, Earth has more or less been globalized...with one exception. A new sovereign power appeared out of nowhere that threatens the peace of the world. A young genius scientist was captured and presumed to be tortured for military secrets and threatened to build a superweapon. So the heroines were tasked to save this scientist on a island somewhere in the pacific oceans from her captors. The island is ruled by this new sovereign power, and is basically lawless where the only law is enforced through violence. The island is heavily rampant with sex and slave trade, human trafficking, drugs, smuggled arms, mercenaries and etc etc. As such, the island itself is conveniently named Labyrinth by its locals. I mean, I pretty much ripped off Despair Labyrinth, but I have to tweak it to make it work in a modern setting.

For some other concept arts.

And that's pretty much it. Apologies for the haphazard info dump and poorly organized post, but I don't have the brainpower to write this shit properly. But feel free to comment and stuff so I can decide whether or not I should greenlight this project.

This seems really cool! I've always been sad Despair Labyrinth was never completed and we never heard from the creator again, but this seems like the next best thing, a similar game but different so it appeases old fans while not being a rip-off. It'd be awesome if you decide to go full time on this, if so, make a patreon, I'd gladly donate.

While I applaud the idea, and I certainly spent my fair share of time with DLaby back when (how many years has it been?), I sure hope you know how much work that'll be.
DLaby used a software (I believe of japanese origin, but it doesn't take a genius to assume that) to create the visuals for it's scenes, as it's creator was more of a writer, so that's probably the reason they all looked somewhat samey (and covered in synthetic oil); What do you plan to use for that? The art so far looks splendid, but that's probably a LOT more work than using a preexisting software, so.... here's hoping you got the drive and stamina for this.

I've thought about dropping Labyrinth from the title entirely since I imagine the gameplay will be more Metal Gear than DLaby itself (mostly due to dropping the turn based combat DLaby had), but I still want to pay some sort of homage to DLaby. As far as Patreon goes, I already have a page for Captivity, so I'm not entirely certain I can have multiple Patreon campaigns for different projects. If this thing is gonna go on, it'll be merged with Captivity's Patreon.

I definitely know how much work it's gonna be. Making games isn't easy. Especially when the game requires lots of art and you're just a single person. In terms of CGs, 3D modeling saves a lot of time in the long run, but I only have basic experience with Blender so accounting for modeling, texturing, scene setting, background objects, lighting and such, I could probably get a single CG done a lot faster if I simply just draw it myself. Using a 3rd party game/software's models without express permission from their publisher is technically illegal, so I'd be at risk of facing legal troubles if I use them in conjunction of funding the project with Patreon. I know some softwares allow use in commercial projects, but they usually cost a ton and like you mentioned, they look samey and covered in synthetic oil.

Tl;dr, I'll probably just end up drawing the CGs by hand and maybe commission the painting/coloring with Patreon monies.

Thanks for voicing your interest and support! Since you've made an account anyway, why not comment on more stuff and generally be a part of the forums? Y'know, just for the shit and giggles.

Using 3DCG for a project like this isn't really illegal since it was sort of made to create your own custom CGs using their assets. Most people who do use 3DCG girl, from what admittingly little I know, used a cracked version of the program anyway.

Ah, right, 3DCG it was.
Also used in Harem etc.
Not a bad program, but if you say you're better drawing, I'll believe you. After all, you can draw, that's a skill not everyone brings to the table.
Regarding combat.... eh, that was never a strong point of DLaby, anyways. We all know why we've been there. <.<
I wish you the best of luck in your endeavours, and will look forward to the results.

Hey guys, I've decided to redesign the characters (these are basically more polished ones), so I'm posting the sketches to see if anyone's still interested in the concept. I've thought about it, but I've also decided to drop "spinoff" from the thread title since I'm not the original creator and thus calling this concept/project a "spinoff" doesn't really make much sense.

Now some of you are probably wondering, why are the boobs so big?
Well, because, I dunno. Some narrative reasons, and to save on sprite work.
But mostly because boobs.

Firstly, I see no problem with this highly compelling argument and give me full support.

Secondly, unless something has changed in the last 10 yrs or so, Russia has the largest breast size on average. Sweden, Finland, an' Norway more or less float around second, with the US coming in a clear fifth place. Fun Facts.
