Simple Sample (humbird0 rpg maker)

Postby Trninja2 » Sun Oct 04, 2015 7:32 pm

First off I'd like say a little about myself, considering i can't remeber if I've ever made an introduction here. I love games, their storytelling capabilities and interactivity make it easy to get lost into. Joined after lurking lok for a year or 2 and was pleasantly suprised at the quality of games made here (sakyubasu, corta'splaformer + others) and have been inspired to give it a shot. In no way do i have any programming skill (still trying 2 learn though), which is why i stared toying with the platform maker from humbird0 and just recently the rpg maker.

Anyway, sorry for the wall of text but at the moment this topic is just a
placeholder for a small n short maze mini-game that I've been plotting to test my own capabilities.
So i guess stay tuned and hope u like it.

(edit): AND HERE IT IS
https://1drv.ms/u/s!AoSIRtU08wknfnHAtjnVTGzJq4g

Controls
Arrow keys= movement
Holding Shift key = run button (don't use during dialogue)
Space bar = action button (interactive environment/talk with npc)

Walkthrough (kinda)
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

1st you fall in a cave and finding your way out is the goal.
After you exit, you'll be in the mountains and will come across a guard, who won't let you pass because
of what you are. To fix that, head down and navigate your way to a.....wall with water running across?(forgot what its called)
Anyway there is a spot that you can dig only in this form, pass through and navigate your way through a mini maze covered by trees.
There you will find the person you seek (if you didn't find the thing in the cave to satisfy the condition worry not as there
is a chest beside the tree that provides an alternative).
Now that you've returned to normal, head back to the guard (don't bother backtracking as our new friend has provided a shortcut)
Once inside the village, head down and speak to the oldman and fisherman, then inside the pub and speak with the bartender.
Next we have the task of gathering materials
Wood = In the clearing after leaving village
Vines = In the deep woods (easy to spot)
Sap = Tree next to castle
Take materials to oldman by river and enjoy the ride.
Now in a spooky cave with a visible way out and few materials inside to work with, decisions decisions.
From there head to the castle, at this point you should have everything you need to get through the castle
while picking up other things you will need inside.
Some tips, doors inside the castle are locked needing either a key or using the keypad next to it
and there are a certain number of guards in each area ;)
Currently progress stops at the last main room which is blocked off but
If you speak to the cheat girl inside she will give you the items necessary to proceed further in game.
Thus ends my basic walkthrough, of course there's more to the game but I don't want to spoil everything right?

Girls in bikinis are cheat girls used by me to test various portions of the game
The current one inside the castle will give items necessary to move on to other portions of the game
that have been completed but are currently lacking the events that link to them.

WARNING: GAMEBREAKING BUG
DO NOT TALK TO THE OLDMAN AGAIN AFTER HE MAKES YOU A RAFT
AS MUCH AS I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, I AM STUMPED
(edited to redo event, just continue as normal)

There's really only 1 sex event(thankfully managed to fix it before release)
and a couple sex related areas but nothing major.
Also you can only get so far into the game before being unable to progress further,
but if you know what to do and where to go it'll take about 20min to get there(no save feature unfortunately). I'm aware of a few bugs and mishaps but haven't had time to fix them as of yet.
It's technically my first game and may seem boring at first, but hopefully you'll find it as enjoyable playing as I did creating it.

There aren't nearly enough sprite based games around.

Looking forward to your contribution.

Thanks Zeus, i was unsure of where to start the thread.

As for the update, things have changed.
When going through the planning and testing i got all excited and wanted to make it more of a full game. So i stared drawing a map of the whole overworld and made a test room where i would try an figure out how to do some of the things i had planned. If i could i would've loved to post it but things have been complicated for awhile and production stopped and wont resume until things have been sorted out.
But i remain confident and i assure you that this will get finished as will the rpg maker game i had started working on for the ps1(whole other story).

I'm not exactly willing to release what is already
done, mostly because i don't want to ruin the initial experience. And as for sex stuff, there isn't much since i never intended it to be that type of game but i'm not against adding more either, maybe a clean and a dirty version.

Things are going well as i have fixed an awful lot of problems and the main line of progression can be made
up to one of the final portions of the game.
Buuut.....i'm still running into a couple problems i can't seem to figure out.
1. I'm trying to have a question asked and then a different action happen based on the response.
2. I need some sort of spotlight to follow the player but black out everything else around them
If you've seen humbird0's "dragon feildtrip", that spotlight in the cave is exactly what i need but
haven't been able to replicate it.
If anyone could help me out I'd greatly appreciate it.

Good news everyone, I've decided to cave and release what's done on the game but only after i find music that matches the feel of each area.
The spotlight thing is sorta done but as the player moves up the objects below will become visible and that kinda sucks, you'll see what i mean (I've set up a cheat girl at the start so you can choose to activate it if you want but it won't deactivate till you've left the area).

I won't set a date but i may keep the same thread and just have it moved to flash since that seems to be where humbird0's projects are.

I must apologize to any1 that has had even a lil bit interest in this game, but once again RL issues have to be dealt with first
(ironically similar to the ones before). But I'll be damned if this project goes past the 2year mark unfinished.

Since issues are constantly popping up as of late, I've decided to just upload as is.
Now for my question, I'm not sure if there's a size limit or anything but i was thinking about zipping the
file and uploading directly to the site or if that's a problem, could anyone recomend a good (hopefully free)
sharing site like mediafire

Well, I just use Dropbox, it's quite simple and free. But there are plenty others, such as Mega, MediaFire, ZippyShare, GoogleDrive, etc. Most of them offer some amount of free storage.

NewGrounds will let you host files if you're a member. More space if you're a paying member. There's also DropBox and GoogleDrive. You can also 7Z it instead of zipping to make the upload smaller.

Thanks for the tips u guys, even though i've gotta go back to work tomorrow (which is gonna slow me down anyway ya look at it)
I'm gonna try and get a gameplan going to get as much taken care of in the shortest amount of time possible
and if all goes well then I should have it up sometime next week.

As for 7z though, i'm not too sure about it mainly cuz i don't think everyone has the means to open that type of zip,
though it's probably just from my experience back in the day going so long without anything like that.
The folder size should definitely be less than 60mb, especially after i go through
and remove all of the unused resources.
I would like to make it a stand alone file but don't think i have the means to do so.

7zip is a free program though, if you don't have it, you can download it for free. It's not like the old WinRar where you had to pay money to unzip stuff. It's also crazy good at compression, a 7z can be as low as 60% the size of a zip file. Really makes the difference if you've got a lot of files to host.

I gave it a try. I'm afraid it feels really buggy. I didn't find any sex scene, although I did find the girls in bikinis near the beginning. Can you post the control scheme? I wasn't sure if I was supposed to be pressing buttons somewhere and if so, what buttons they were supposed to be. For a while, the spacebar seemed like it was toggling the darkness effect on and off instantly. I found a sort of secret area that said "AAAAHHHH" but then nothing else happened.

I remember trying the humbird RPG engine myself and not being super impressed with it. Have you seen my list of Unity Engines? There's one in particular, Top Down 2D RPG Kit, that you might find useful for a project like this. Although if all you want is a maze game, I know that you could do that really easily in Unity's built in 3D physics engine, and I imagine it's not too much more challenging in their 2D engine.

I use 7z and google for storage, been pretty satisfied so far
I gave the game a try and I was so lost lol. Walked through the first person I saw, a bit later I hit space in front of another person and I teleported. Wasn't motivated enough to continue, just had no idea what what going on :P

Yeah that was my bad
I was rushing it a bit and totally forgot to explain some things.

The reason for it being buggy is cuz i went ahead and created the biggest room possible
to hold the entirety of the game without area transitions. That made it extremely difficult
to finish on my old desktop which is what i was using at the time to build the bulk of it when i was
unemployed for 2 months and it would run so slow that i could even continue working until i bought
my current laptop (so much faster).

The girls in bikinis were suppose to be my cheat girls so i could jump to specific
areas and test events and such for bugs. Naturally i forgot to remove the 3 lined up next to each other,
but the 1st one you enounter is meant to be there for now to see if a spotlight for the cave is necessary or not.
I imagine if you talked to one of them, you skipped past the scene.

The controls (aside from the arrow keys to move i different directions) i think there are only 2.
The shift key = holding this down will increase movement speed aswell as dialogue speed
(not recommended for dialogue as can cause undesired effects)
The space bar = is basically your action button
Use it to interact with items, doors, and talk to people (friend or foe)

Have you seen my list of Unity Engines?

As a matter of fact i have and am very intrigued aswell as intimidated by Unity.
It seems to be beyond my skill level but then again so did gamemaker studio and i seem to be able
to grasp how it works after toying with it for awhile, just like i did with humbird0's rpg maker and his
platform maker before that (might just post the work i did with that for fun).
But i also don't like the idea of paying for a subscription to make the most of a software i don't even know how to use.
Godot is another one i've been lookin at, what with it being open source an all.

The action button will handle the guard in the secret area.

The free version of Unity has everything you'd need. Plus and Pro are designed for companies making MMOs with online purchases. Working on your own, you would never, ever need them. For example, check out the free demos for Hitbear's Action RPG and Song's Turn-Based Toolkit, these are incredible and both completely do-able with the free version, as is the Zelda-style game from before. There's probably a bunch of good 2D engines out there that I've been passing over.

Another engine I want to point out is Hitbear's Easy Event Maker. It's 10 bucks, and it'll do everything I see happening in your maze game so far. The catch is, it's 3D, so you would need to find different graphics. I quite like this guy's set: https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/char ... f-my-girls (If it's an FBX, I think you can open that in Blender, but there are some issues importing things between 3DSMax and Blender) There are lots of ways to obtain 3D models from games and so on for free, but as I've always planned to make my own characters, I've never really looked into this.

Gave the maze game another play, knowing the controls, and it's much better. I got to the door of the castle before giving up on it. For a game like this, I really need a funny story, like Baby Sitter's Club 2 or Harem Collector, or there needs to be lots of non-pixel porn somewhere.

Cool beans, i've downloaded free version but I'm not ready to start tinkering with it just yet as i don't want to take my focus away from this.
I actually meant to make this more serious but after the jokes i've already put in , that ship has sailed.
The story is coming, i actually have enough material to make a trilogy out of this but i need to work out some details
like weather or not to make the MC a mute.
I may just throw a lil walkthrough in a spoiler, so that frustration doesn't set in when it's unclear on what to do next.
