Genie - Suspense visual novel (Pseudo-Victorian, Ren'py)

Postby Keliar » Mon May 15, 2017 6:21 pm

Hello, I want to show you a demo for our suspense visual novel Genie. The story revolves around a young detective is assigned to a mysterious murder case two days prior to his long-awaited promotion. Will he be able to overcome the pressure from his higher-ups and apprehend the culprit?

Genie has more in common with Moacube’s novels Cinders and Solstice, rather than classic Japanese style. We took the pseudo-Victorian period as our main inspiration for the art - black and white pencil drawings base with a dash of pastel and brushwork.

The current demo (direct download) has about one-fifth of the planned content. It’s available for Windows, Mac and *nix platforms with English and Russian language support.

If you liked the preview, consider supporting us on the Greenlight. Thanks!

You will experience the story through the eyes of Jack Mason, the young detective in a small town near the N sea. Facing hardships of being among the shunned colorblind minority, the Squints, he tries his best to focus on the brighter things in life. Winning respect from the true-born Imperials by skill and dedication, Jack plans out his future with his loved ones. Yet everything changes, then an eerie murder smashes the tranquil atmosphere in town.

Genie’s story has a special place between horror, suspense and detective genres mixing elements from all three of them and spicing them up with human relationships. If I had to name the main focus – it would be suspense/thriller theme. The story tries to catch the swirl of emotions wherever you play hide and seek with a murderous maniac or in a less dramatic situation. Genie leads a fast-paced narrative with action scenes akin to the first, opening one, then gives the player a break with a bit of background the “whys and whats” behind the tale.

Hey, considering this is not the normal kind of game that is posted on this kinda forum.

Heck, this is maybe the most normal game in this site.
Beside that, this story is pretty interesting, I kinda now trying to find out who is the murder and how the heck did they get away from you so easily at the start.
I might not create games, but I will test them, Then I will give advice on what I think needs to be added, removed, or improved.

Thanks for the feedback :> Genie is a huge experiment – the black and white approach, pencil drawings, hobbyist writer and semi-realistic art instead of anime style. I’m really happy to see that some readers like the concept.

0.3 is the last public release tho, I’m planning to release the novelette somewhere in July on digital platforms like GoG, itch, etc. Steam is under question because Genie bogged down in the Greenlight, plus Valve wants to give the whole submission system an overhaul. Anyway, if you want to check VN’s current status – consider subscribing to the Patreon page. I periodically post updates and reports there.
