The Allure of Wanton Cove [HTML] (1/11/19)

Postby GateKeeper_A » Sun Jan 29, 2017 9:02 pm

The Allure of Wanton Cove is a Lovecraftian Horror game with erotic elements. My writing style has little in common with H.P. Lovecraft, so instead I am approaching the story from more of a Noir style. That said, this story is intended to be the same kind of horror. Its meant to capture both the dark and hopeless terror and to share in the Cthuhlu Mythos.

The game has a thick and almost oppressive atmosphere that many players seem to enjoy a great deal. As of 1/29/17, the game has been in development for roughly two years and includes just over 138k words of content. Until about two months ago, production was slow as I worked on it as time permitted. About 40k of the content in the game has been written in the last two months as I've started to treat this like a job, spending +15 hours a week working on projects most weeks

You're a washed up ex-detective, living your life one bottle at a time when your old partner and estranged friend comes knocking. His son has gone missing, the police wont pursue the case, and he's run out of leads, so he comes looking to call in an old favor.

You hear him out, even if you have no intention of helping him out. But then he offers you the only clue he has to the whereabouts of his son. A hand written letter with a return address of Wanton Cove, the very name of which dregs up memories of the last horrible case you worked, a case that was never solved.

The attached build of the game is the most current/complete version available to anyone at the time of this posting (Seriously, I posted it publicly about an hour before I made this post.)

Take a look at the game. I appreciate all thoughts, comments, feedback, and constructive criticism. I'd love to hear everyone's first impressions of the game! Hope you all enjoy it!

What some of the fans of this game have had to say about it (Yes, I did cherry pick these reviews as some of my favorites, but there's actually quite a bit more where they came from. ;) ):
This has become something really solid. I have to give a ton of credit to the author for putting in the effort to keep updating and working on it. This is a fun game and if the Author keeps going it could be one of the best on the site.

I want to say thanks to the author. The aesthetic is great and walks the line between strange (too much of which is stupid to me.) and realistic (too much of which is boring to me.) perfectly.

Keep up the good work.

Lets start of by saying thar what caught me about this game is the work that has been done on the writing. It paints a beautifull picture, with absolutely above standard writing for adult text-adventure games. The style of writing, as well as the tone and setting, realy make this game stand out to me.

The only thing i was missing, was a way to save at anny point i liked. This ofcourse adds more thought to your actions, since you cant just go back when your choice is not what you wanted, but at the same time can be a bit of a hinderance since you cant just quit the game annytime you want(correct me if im wrong and it autosaves).

The story sofar realy intrigued me, despite the fact that horror or lovecraft are neither my favorite genre's or writers. Keep up the work, and a well deserved like from me.

I feel that most games on this site can be broadly put into two categories. Porn with game elements, and games with porn elements. I would say this fits into the latter category. The writing in general, the setting, and the atmosphere of the game are excellent. It feels very Lovecraftian. Seriously, this game is creepy from the get go, and the tension that it creates really works. The random scenes generally help keep the tension high, and atmosphere thick. The character work could be a bit better. To be clear, some characters get a lot of love, but others feel like little more a click through dialouge to gather clues. It's that contrast that makes me even write this criticism.

On to the TF. There seems to be one central TF in the game, and it is painfully slow... in a very good way. You could railroad your way through it if you really want to, but I get the feeling that once there is a path to a more satisfactory ending it is the kind of thing that will happen over time, and you will struggle against it if you want to enjoy the content. This seems fitting, as characters tend to lose their minds in Lovecraftian fiction, while here we have our main character losing their body and mind. The descriptions of the TF as they occur range from good to great. Unfortunately, if you want to be reminded of what you look like, the "you" link displays a pretty bare bones description of your current form. It's not a deal breaker, and I know it is a pain to write a bit of code to reflect those dynamic changes in a somewhat more literary format, but it is a feature I look for in TF games.

The game sits at a v.0.42 as of this writing, and the length of the main story content reflects that number. Like I said, this one is a game with porn, and I actually want to know how the story is going to progress and end, discounting the inevitable "high taint" ending. That doesn't mean it isn't worth playing in the current incarnation. There is more story in this than many of the 1.0 releases I see on this site. I can only hope that the author continues and finishes this horrific and erotic tale.

The slow burn of the transformation is very torturous, but its creeping presence gives the game a real sense of dread... or eroticism if you're into that. What has been released has been a spectacular Detective Adventure that does well to put you into the story. The atmosphere has been very dark and foreboding. I find myself wanting to know more about the world and there's enough grit here to make it without the transformation aspect.

Because, let's be honest, who didn't keep going back to your room with that woman?

Fun Tip: Play some music from a dark horror game. I personally used Silent Hill for this. It adds to the experience.

Came for the Smut, stayed for the Story. Probably one of the better compliments I could pay.

Now, I want to say a couple of things for clarity. This game is free and always will be. I DO have a Patreon account that is plugged on the first page of the game, but you by no means have to pledge to play the newest version. I release two versions of the game, the Public Build which has all of the latest story elements and content, and the Patreon Build which includes a cheat menu. In other words, there are only two reasons to pledge anything: 1. You enjoy the game and are in a position to show a little support, and 2. If you want access to a set of Cheats to adjust your stats within the game.

(If I'm overstepping myself by talking about the Patreon like this, please let me know. I'll be happy to adjust the language in the above post, or edit it if needed.)

Updated the first post in this thread with an updated build. I had broken Tanya (The prostitute) in the tavern with the latest bit of content related to her. The build should fix that and make all of her content playable once more.

Unless there is anything game breaking in this build, you can expect a new build to be out mid to late February. If all goes well, the first public build of my next project should be nearing release around that time as well. ;)

Sorry for the inconvenience.

It looks like quite a few people had downloaded version .64. I hope that everyone is enjoying the game so far.

V.67

New build includes about 8k words of new content, bringing the game up to rouchly 146k words of total content. New content includes the ability to explore the "Cathedral", a new scene related to the leatherbound tome, conversation options with Mr Morichi, and some new naughtyness for low taint characters related to Nadia among some smaller stuff I'm not remembering right now. Enjoy the new build!

Attached is the most current version of the game. However, if you're interested in obtaining the cheat menu (Basically allows you to adjust your stats and counters within the game) or just want to show a little support, there is a Patreon link on the start page of the game what you can follow. Otherwise, enjoy the linked version of the game.

Interesting game so far. Was a little disappointed there didn't seem to be any scenes for post-transformation, always liked gender bender, but ah well, it'll come eventually lol. Story's fairly interesting, wonder if octogod is gonna get involved or if it's just the creepy faceless one that'll be part of things. Thanks for the game.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

For the "Gender Bender" content, there ARE scenes related to your changed form, both with the recluse in the woods, and related to the threesome scene that appears randomly on your way to your room. Over on my Patreon account, I have a poll running asking for where to focus my attention next, it looks like my next focus will be to add more content for NPCs in order to broaden their reactions to accommodate the changes the character can experience. In other words, the next build (Which should be out in about three weeks. Tentative release date is the 30th-31st of this month.) will actually have a lot of focus on the transformation aspects of the game.

As the game grows, we'll delve deeper into the Cthulhu mythos, but the focus will remain primarily on the Elder God Zal'chaas.

I'm happy to hear that you're enjoying the game so far. :D

New build of the game is live for anyone who is interested. New update includes new NPC reactions to the character's transformations for some NPCs, new Combat scenes, new ambient scenes starting on day 5, along with some other stuff I'm sure I'm forgetting. About 22k words of new content with this build.

For the next build, I plan to start adding art to the game and continue adding NPC interactions to the character's transformations, and more story driven content.

Hope you enjoy the game!

just tried the new version, came back to the tavern on the second day at one point, got an event that seemed to be tom suddenly showing up there and then running away when I spot him, then it errors out shortly after that and has no continuation options and requires a reload.

Actually, event still fires on a reload. Guess I'm stuck then.

I tried your game, it was the latest version and it was... something else.
It's well written and the atmosphere of the story is quiet unique but it left me perplexed.

I don't have the ability to properly convey my feeling but thank you all the same. It's a game, an adventure that is different and I hope you will be able to finish it.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, was without internet over the weekend.

On the up side, this was an issue reported at the start of the weekend and I just dropped by to release a fix for that, and a couple of other small issues!

Like Lovecraft and Poe, its not for everyone. Thank you for giving it a try. On a side note, I'm in the pre-release phase of another project which is more of a slave trainer game with a heavy emphasis on relationships. Who knows, maybe that will be more up your alley?

Now, new build!

New build should include fixes to some reported bugs Including the one reported above) as well as a couple of new pieces of background art, a couple of minor rewrites in the game, and a restructuring of the sidebar. Attached it the public build of the game. If anyone is interested in supporting the project, or gaining access to the Cheat menu, there is a link to my Patreon page on the front page inside of the game.

New build is ready to go!

What has changed since the last build:
-I think (hope) I finally fixed that incredibly frustrating bug in the Tavern that keeps cropping up.
-New mechanic added to the game called "Madness" that includes a couple of scenes related to it, and the first few NPCs have been updated to include that mechanic.
-New NPC added to the game; Rose Crow. New background added for scenes related to the bad part of town.
-New ending added to the game related to the Madness stat (Is only reachable using the Cheat Menu at this time. This will change as more major scenes related to Madness are added to the game).
-All in all, there is about 6k words of new content in the game bringing the total word count up to about 206k.

If you're in a position to do so, please consider helping support the author by making a pledge on Patreon (Link in game), every little bit helps. Earnings keeps the power on, pays for the internet, and helps to commission additional art for the game.

Free version of the game can be found in the first post of this thread.

Changelog .90:

-The usual minor fixes. Dropped everything up to the arrival in Wanton Cove into a spell/grammar checker and made some fixes/adjustments where needed. Also worked through everything but the cheat menu associated with the sidebar. Elsewhere in the story, if I saw it, it got fixed.

-Added a new cheat option for Mutation that does +/-2 and can serve to showcase the new set of TF events related to Mutation.

-Adjusted combat difficulty to make it a little more difficult.

-Unique fight added to the waterfront on day 7. This fight must be triggered before the related enemy starts to appear randomly in the game.

-New enemy added to the game.

-New Enemy scenes added to Forest. 1/6 chance that if there's a fight, it will be this enemy.

-New Enemy scenes added to Main Street. 1/5 chance that if there's a fight, it will be this enemy.

-New Enemy scenes added to the bad part of town. 1/5 chance that if there's a fight, it will be this enemy.

-New Enemy scenes added to the waterfront. 1/3 chance that if there is a fight, it will be this enemy.

-New loss scenes for combat with new enemy.

-Wrote and added new Mutation based Transformation scenes

-New NPC: Lady Anne, has been added to the game. She is not complete yet (She is playable to a point), but the framework has been added to allow for future content to be added.

-Completely rebuilt the code for fight intros. Not only should this fix the combat bugs that were present, but this should also make it easier to work with this code in the future.

-Added about 27k words of new content to the game. This brings the total game size up to about 267k words. Please note that more than half of this new content is tied up in the new TF sequences and fight loss scenes that are largely repeated between more than one location (Some minor rewrites between locations.)
