Civilization Name: Ironmountain Kingdom
Civilization History/Description: A small kingdom built around a mountain with unusually rich iron deposits, taken by an old pagan group of marauders that managed to cling to the small hold and expand. The new metal allowed the miners and tool makers to make very strong tools allowing for rapid expansion of wealth. Following the wealth soon followed invaders looking for it, promoting a rapid development of military prowess, much of it borrowed from the local 'Monstrous Women' out of necessity. Thanks to some recent negotiations involving various familial marriages, the kingdom recently annexed a smaller nearby region of fertile planes, including a small port. With this purchase, the kingdom is now able to produce its own food rather than purchase the bulk of it.
Food Production: 3
Trade/Crafting/Industry: 4
Military: 3
Monster Girls: Lizard/reptile folk and others that favor mountainous regions. The new territory has more plains than before, favoring centaurs and other creatures that favor such.

Leader Name: Katherine Rediron
Leader Description: https://chan.sankakucomplex.com/post/show/1469007
Leader Abilities/Skills:
Studious: Princess Katherine has spent much of her time learning about the world through books and tutors, resulting in a wide breadth of knowledge across many subjects. (+1 to knowledge rolls)
Analytical Mind: Constant inquiry has produced a mind that quickly breaks down problems into smaller pieces, allowing for proper delegation. (+1 to problem solving/planning rolls)
Planned Leader: Being the expected heir, Katherine has studied and practiced leadership rolls for almost her entire life, and knows many of the important aspects of running the kingdom. (+1 to leadership rolls)
Bookworm: Katherine has significantly more experience with scholars than soldiers, resulting in a more timid mindset of trying to out think a problem rather than turn to violence. (-1 to direct military command rolls)
Leader Backstory: Katherine was the heir apparent of her father, so has spent much of her time learning about the ins and outs of how a kingdom functions on a basic level, however her father’s strong bias towards direct leadership meant she had little to experiment with. Her father focused on his military more than anything else, allowing his advisors to govern the industry in its entirety, and having little interest in farming management. Katherine is the opposite, preferring to learn about everything she can in order to improve the kingdom. Her habits have also isolated her from much of the anger directed toward the non humans occupying her land. Her lack of experience with other people leads to rapid shifts in mood when interacting, creating an image of a flighty or inattentive personality despite much training.

You are nervous, and your footsteps echoing through the otherwise silent hall don't help. It's time for you to hold court for the first time and make decisions for the kingdom... You were only enthroned yesterday after your father's death a week ago, and now you're the solo arbiter for the royal court... and solely responsible for a country. You knew this day would come, and were trained for it... but a part of you still can't believe this is real. Another part wished this hall would last forever. Unfortunately for that part of you, it wasn't long before you were standing in front of a large wooden door, tinted read and elaborately carved with symbols of your family and the kingdom's history, and now only thing separating you from the throne room. To make matters worse, you couldn't really stand here in indecision either, due to the heavily armored royal guards posted either side of the door, waiting for you to give the signal for them to open the door.

Image
Leona Duana: Your and your siblings tutor since you were children and was the daughter of the previous chamberlain. She eventually gained the trust of your father to the point of not only inheriting the position of chamberlain, but also steward. She has a very professional attitude and is capable of becoming very intimidating when she deems necessary, as such has gotten a bit of a reputation around the castle for her death glare. With that said, she is overall a kind person, though has difficulty showing it and is very proud of your growth as her star pupil. Currently unmarried.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Image
High Lord General Valter Winther: Originally from a minor noble family, he single-handedly crafted into one of the most influential families in the kingdom. His ascent started during a war with the Rathfor Empire thirty five years ago, where he established himself as a cunning officer and talented warrior. He has a tendency to worry and expect the worst possible outcome, which has saved his skin many times during war, but has a tendency to over prepare or give up opportunities. He is aware of this weakness, and though he doesn't change himself, he does respect those who are capable of taking such risks.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Image
Aural Ottmar: The third son of his family, he was never in line to inherent power, so instead applied himself into understand how to control one of the most pure forms of power... money. Showing a great aptitude for numbers and logistics, he found himself in service of the royal treasury where he gained the eye of one of veterans. That veteran, who'd later become chief treasurer before Aural, was a bit of a visionary, who wanted to expand the treasuries duties from merely accounting and tax collecting to planning and encouraging economic growth, but needed help to do so. Recruiting the young Aural for this plan, they proposed crown funded, paved roads over most of the kingdom to encourage trade as well as help with military movement and construction. While it caused severe strain on the kingdom's economy, by the time your father inherited the throne, the investment had paid itself off two times over. He was also instrumental in the agreement for annexing Kuttainen. As a person he's calculating but surprisingly daring at times and his focusing on economy and Valter's instance on over preparing often puts them in in conflict, creating a long standing rivalry. Despite this, they do actually have great respect for one another, if not for the others point of view.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Vitale Varela: A man with no noble heritage. Growing up in the slums, he was around small time criminals for as long as he can remember, giving him a good understanding of how they act. In fact he wagers he'd have become one if it wasn't for one defining event in his life. One time he was traveling with his family as they went to Khester to trade, his family was attacked by bandits, and would have been slaughtered if it wasn't for the intervention of a patrol of guardsmen. In order to repay his debt, he decided to become a guardsmen. His knowledge and ties in the slums proved invaluable, quickly allowing him to rise through the ranks. Many loath the man for his lenience with minor criminals, often arguing that they will become bigger criminals later, but in reality this gives him an information network on what is going on in the shadier places of town, allowing him to more effectively deal with major criminals. In addition, while he might have pity for the desperate pickpocket, who wouldn't be able to eat that day if not for his crime, he has no mercy on those who'd harm another citizen, and has a trail of bodies of countless bandits behind him. As such, no one dares to challenge his position of chief constable.

Adeline Ferrari: A dwarven noble with a flare for fashion and metal. She is a very good speaker, knowing when to speak, and what to say, though often is motivated by greed. She has been declared by a council of monster girls to be their representative in the court.

Elvira Bernarda: A high ranking druid and current head of the druidic order, Steinnach, which focus on pleasing the spirits of earth, Gnome, as well as Gaia herself and as such obviously the most popular order in your mining heavy kingdom. The head of the Steinnach is sent to the court to give the Sovereign spiritual advice.

I play with my gloves as I approach, tugging and pulling at the fingers, my mind in turmoil. This is far more intense than I thought it would be. I settle down as I approach the guards, the etiquette training taking over, my hands moving to smooth my dress. I resist the urge to pace before entering, forcing myself to stand still and tall. I take a deep breath before nodding to the guards. This must be done, and I've trained for it. I will do it.

I step into the throne room.

They nod back to you, each taking hold of their half of the door, pressing their weight against its significant mass, only managing to have it open at a casual pace. Once it got about half open, one of the guards announces in a booming voice, "All kneel before Her Highness." The gather court complies, kneeling before the throne until you cross the small distance from the gate to it and sit down on it. One thing that helped your nerves is that this court is only with your father's advisor council, and thus, all people you have meet before.

The first to speak is a woman with jet black hair, a very sharp gaze, and absolute precision in her movements, "Miss Katherine, as the new sovereign, you will need to decide on policy now, and even if you decide to continue your father's, you should at least be aware of what they are." Leona Duana's brazen use of your first name isn't surprising... after all she was your tutor since you were a girl, and still tutors your younger sister, not to mention she was also both father's the steward and chamberlain, and one of the few people outside the royal family who could enter the royal quarters without an invitation.
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

The next to speak was an older man, who despite his age held himself with strength, betraying his military background. High Lord General Valter Winther, the highest ranking military officer in the kingdom, and due to your father's obsession with the military, widely considered your father's right hand man. He, obviously excepting you to be ill-disposed towards the military, appeals to you, "Then allow me to start. Your Highness, I am aware that you are not as fond of the military as your late father, however I urge you to show restraint in curtailing your forces. Competent soldiers will take time to train, and should we find ourselves in another war with the Holy Rathfor Empire, we will not have time to train them from the ground up."
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

"That is why we have a line of fortification on that border complete with a garrison. We hardly need the expenditure of a standing army, especially since our recent acquisition of Kuttainen has revealed it's woefully inadequate infrastructure. There a no less that three major farming villages that transport their goods to market by paths made by cattle and cart. Not to mention Kuttainen proper only has cobblestone roads on it's largest roads. Your highness, I suggest we redirect funds to extending our road network into Kuttainen. While it is an investment once it is complete, commence will increase, and thus our tax revenue, not to mention the tolls, so will pay for itself in time," The immediate rebuttal and counter-proposal originated from another old man, though far more lanky, but no less will behind his eyes, and is the kingdom's treasurer, Aural Ottmar. He is a very calculating man, and often comes to conflict with Valter, leading to a long rivalry between them. You can tell that he is reckoning that with your crowning, he finally has the chance to remove Valter from his favored position if not outright replace him.
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

"A meaningless effort if we are destroyed by our enemies. If we reduce our military, Rathfor will see our weakness and exploit it," Valter replies, clearly not intending to back down without a fight, "I'm sure I don't have to remind you of their animosity towards us."
"Unsupported assertions! They have never successfully invaded, and now we have not only fortifications but the advantage of widespread iron arms," Aural snaps back.
"We ar-" Valter starts before he is cut off. "ENOUGH! May I remind you gentlemen that you are in front of her Highness, if you wish to engage in such insolence, then I encourage to you to take it elsewhere," Leona snarls at them as she gives them her signature death glare. After they both recover from receiving such a venomous tone, the two rivals both kneel before you in such perfect union, it's almost as if it was rehearsed... Even their declaration is in union, "My apologizes, you Highness!"

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Just FYI, the wooden door is basically a last ditch effort to prevent invaders from reaching the Royal family, as it separates the Royal quarters from the rest of the castle and is reinforced, allowing reinforcements to show up or for the royal family to use the escape route. Hence why it's so heavy.

I listen to the two men bicker for a moment, allowing their discussion to cover my thoughts. My studies lead me to view the issue of transit vs military in terms of speed. Curtailing the military isn't something I wish to do, but the roads have enough benefits that it outweighs the costs. "General Winther, my learning is not in the field as yours is, much of it simply the written theories of generals from before. That said, many of them agree that the fighting men are but the tip of the spear, the food and supplies being the shaft. Expanding the road system into our new territory will allow for a faster response to any troubles in the regions, as well as the ability to move food and other supplies to those same fortresses and armies that defend us. The additional economic benefits cannot be overlooked as well. Your concern with letting the men go to seed to save cost is a valid one."

Making a small show of pondering, I think of how to apply some of my knowledge of what others have done. "We shall maintain the veteran forces at their current level. The younger soldiers of our fighting force will be moved to 'reserve status'. They will receive reduced pay, but will be required to maintain some level of fitness and readiness. I would recommend sending them with the work teams to earn extra coin and to maintain unit cohesion, so that they may practice. A priority for the new recruits from the Kuttainen province will be to help construct in the area and be trained against the raiders they are likely to be challenged by. Men who helped build a fortress will know the best ways to defend it."

I hold my face steady and passive as I wait for their response. My nervousness doesn't show through, but I'm hoping that will work. I saw it used once or twice before now, and I'm hoping it will work out for me. Thinking of soldiers doing something besides training in formation is odd, but I'm guessing that spending most of their time in physical exertion will keep them fit, and the training and drills will keep their skills somewhat sharp.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Neat. I take it Leona is Science Advisor, General Valter is military and Aural is econ?

I'd like to mix the results if I can, building the roads is priority, but I'll take a moderate time/cost penalty to that to maintain military power on a delayed use. Essentially, six hours building roads, two hours combat training a day.

You see a small smile appear on Leona's face as the two men are taken aback by your suggestion. Clearly they weren't expecting such a response and are considering it carefully. Taking advantage of the silence, another voice spoke out, "If I may your Majesty, I support this plan. One additional problem with the lack of roads is that means the citizens don't necessarily take prescribed routes... making them more vulnerable to banditry. Indeed, I have gotten many reports of such things already, and it's incredibly hard to patrol the entire countryside, so if we only had to secure the roads, we're be more effective. Another advantage of this is that the bandits will likely mistake the soldiers building the roads an unarmed civilians and thus easy prey... Allowing us to cut down their numbers as well as giving the recruits actual battle experience." The grizzled and scarred man was none other than the chief constable, Vitale Varela, a rugged man lacking the proper form of the High Lord General, but no less experienced, though his specialization is dealing with the lowest of society. He is renowned for being underhanded and cunning when it came to capturing criminals, say for example tricking them into thinking a group of people are easy prey when they are in fact a trained and well armed force. Still, what he lacked in honor, he made up in loyalty, being just as determined to rout out corruption among his own ranks as in the local population.

"Your Highness, since I believe the previous order of business is complete, I'd like to propose something," A voice called out that took a moment to place, since the origin is hidden behind the other courtiers being a dwarf. Elvira Bernarda, a druid and current head of the druidic order, Steinnach, which focus on pleasing the spirits of earth, Gnome, as well as Gaia herself and as such obviously the most popular order in your mining heavy kingdom. Elvira herself is patient who doesn't show her emotions, trying her best to give a balanced response regardless of the situation. "I believe it might be wise to hold a ceremony to appease Gaia as one of your first actions as a sovereign, so that she might bless your reign. Obviously, in order to do this properly, this is will a significant expenditure, however the potential benefits of having the favor of the spirits should not be underestimated."

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Also, what kind of war knowledge is there? Does everyone fight in formations with spears and shields yet?

"Master Varela, I applaud your thinking, but I would give a word of caution. Our soldiers are trained to fight soldiers, not capture bandits. While versatility is good, I will not have their soldierly habits compromised to make them better bandit hunters. Focus on borrowing the men who will be stationed along the desert, raiders and bandits are the most similar, while defending a fortress is not. The details of which groups are specialized and which are generalized is not something I follow, so I will ask you to deal with General Winther in order to establish which soldiers to use where for this task. I would also ask that you do some work to ensure that there are forts at strategic locations along the crossroads and such, that any travelers may find safe passage, or resist a light siege. Establish these first, and then build the roads between them. Use existing villages as your frame work, but a days ride should not require spending the night unsafe if possible. I will expect an expense estimate with several options to be presented soon enough. Minister Ottmar, you shall help them, focus on keeping the cost down, but be aware: saving gold now is nice, but I dislike wasting my gold on inadequate investments more." That should cover most of that.

Listening to the Druid, I ponder for a bit. "Would the goddess be upset if we shared the ceremony with another holiday? If not, I will still allow the ceremony, but I do like to squeeze my gold." I tell her. Given the way the other kingdoms around me are hostile towards the spirits, I think setting myself up as something of a haven for them will allow me to have a few more to ask for help for in times of need. Besides, everyone loves a good party.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Spears and shields are common, though due to your abundance of iron you have large amounts of troops with swords. Remember that this is late bronze, early iron age so things like phalanxes are very much a thing, though there is also the start of things like very early roman legionaries and their sword focused military.

"Your Highness, I am not suggesting they hunt down the bandits... Rather the bandits come to them... Besides, any military unit anywhere should be trained to know what to do in case of an ambush," Varela corrects before saying, "I'm sure the governor of Kuttainen will appreciate that... He's been asking me to help with their... lack of fortifications."
"Your Highness, I must point out that without roads to transport supplies, the construction of the outposts will cost more and take longer, and as it is, these forts, even excluding the extra cost of transport, will take significant investments, easily doubling the cost. I'm afraid your Highness might be trying to do too much, too quickly," Aural points out.
"If it's about finances, there is an untapped market," The final advisor finally spoke up, Adeline Ferrari, a dwarf noble that is the representative of the monster girl's interests, "We could start selling iron to our neighbors."
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Image

"I highly object to this," Valter pipes up at that, "Our main advantage is our abundance of iron, especially against those only equipped with bronze. Selling it would be highly detrimental to our survival."
(Guess, that the subject wasn't quite as done as I expected.)

"If it is on a holy day, then most certainly not. In fact that would be a highly appropriate time, though the nearest holy day is in three months time," The druid points out.

"Then you have permission to begin the plans for a celebration. If you think a bit of moderation now and a more lavish festival on the holy day would be acceptable, do that, but I am willing to handle the cost now. Make your plans and alert me afterwards." I tell the Druid, returning my attention to the martial and economic concerns now that I've granted the druids request.

"A good distinction, and I am happy you explained. Set ambushes and prepare against them as you and General Winther see fit to continue with the task of setting things up." I ponder Aural's statement next. "I can see the issue with my plan. Perhaps a leap frog approach? Construct roads to planned fortification areas, stream materials to them to build the forts and stockpile for the roads to start next. Another possibility would be to focus on arterial roads first and foremost, creating a set of good wide roads along the path to the sea, and then branching outward. I am not pleased with the idea of simply sending a large body of troops into an area without a secure fort to retreat to should the need arise. However, I am also aware that I am not a connoisseur of the martial arts as much as my advisors, and that what I think best on the subject is informed almost entirely through studies rather than experience. Winther and yourself shall establish estimates for completion and cost to weigh the risks and gains. My inclination is to weight the roads as the primary goal and the fortifications as the secondary, allowing a more rapid completion of the projects even if it carries slightly greater risk."

I bristle at the suggestion of selling iron to other kingdoms. But a source of income is a source of income. "Leona, make...discreet inquiries to Goafun and the Vrascio about the kind of price we can expect, as well as the possibility of an alliance of some kind, or simply a trade of troops. I have heard great things about certain breeds of archer and their ability to fire between cracks of armor, and I would like to see about getting a colony of our own. Under no circumstances will there be selling to the Rathfor or those filthy bandits from the desert. I know there's no way to keep the metal from others forever, but we can at least seek to profit more than the black market which we will never fully quash. The material is too common to completely lock it down in our coffers. If there are questions of losing an advantage, we shall be the first to know how to combat foes with iron weapons, Winther form a team to train in tactics against other iron users." I hope I'm doing acceptably. I hold my confidence in the face of their corrections, but I'm already feeling a bit overwhelmed as I struggle to see all of the pieces fit together.

Elvira nods at your decision and lets you get back to the main matter as does Varela.

"I will say that any mottle bandit group shouldn't be a threat to our men, so I doubt they will need to retreat," Valter comments, before nodding to your decision.

"Understood, though I suspect a formal alliance is out of the question, as they are afraid of the Rathfor Empire and fear that an alliance with a 'heathen' kingdom like us would bring their wrath upon them. Nor do I suspect that they would trust us enough to swap soldiers, but I can ensure you they will be very interested in our offer," Leona briefly warns you of what to expect, before making a side remark with amused contempt, "Speaking of those filthy raiders... They actually sent an envoy. Anyways, is there anything else her Highness would like to bring up?"

"I am less concerned with the Bandits, and more with a sudden raid from the desert in large numbers. A sudden group from that position of sufficient size could cut small construction parties to pieces if they have nowhere to fortify." I tell him, knowing that we're overdue for a large raid. I'm surprised when Leona mentions the idea of an envoy from the raiders. "I am willing to hear an envoy that has arrived in peace, even if we are hostile as a country." I tell her, surprised.

A moments thought to her last question, and I decide to make a request. "We had very little in the way of agricultural knowledge before the acquisition of Kuttainen, so I know little of it. Much of my knowledge on the subject stems from the few books we have on farming on the side of a mountain. I would like to see the acquisition of some books for my library on the subject, either from them or from others. I would also like to expand the libraries in the cities and townships if possible, as it is a cause near to my heart. But I am aware that money is tight as we expand the Kuttainen's roadways."

She seems to be as surprised as you were to her comment, and she's not the only one, as the rest of the court also clearly wore their confusion on their face. Obviously they expected you to blow off the envoy from a barbaric tribe. As you added your comment about the books, Leona bows before excusing herself, "Understood your Highness, I will get right to them."

A quiet grew over the court after she left, before Valter speaks up, "I... understand it's a break of etiquette if other parties listen in on an envoy, but I can't help but worry about their intentions. Would you grant me permission stay?"

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Couple problems with that... Foremost Goafun doesn't actually have elves in their kingdom... rather they have an independent elven city within their borders like how the Vatican is. So they can't 'give' citizens that aren't theirs... well they can but that cause all kinds of issues. Just a note... This is well before the printing press so books are hella expensive so no library is going to be public.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Is fair, wasn't sure exactly how the arrangement was, just saw that they were 'rumored' to have elves in their territory. I would like to tempt some elves into the territory, but Kat is mostly just looking to expand her armies capabilities beyond spearmen and engineers. She's not an expert in tactics, but is aware that variety leads to options.

Most likely, they books are going to be part of the keep as symbols of wealth, like they were in reality. Also, a chance to train scribes for later use, as she's much more likely to try and get stuff written down. Also, printing presses were valuable because they made printing different books much easier. Before that, they'd use carved stamps or hardened clay for the images and you could do the same for letters, assuming you've got the time and energy to make a lot of one book/pamphlet.

"The guards shall remain for my safety, as is appropriate. I do not know if my father had some arrangement with them, and that is why we have been 'peaceful' with them for the past few years, and I would prefer to not jeopardize that peace. It is important that they know that we shall treat them honorably so that we may converse without weapons being drawn. I will inform you of what they say should your opinion be warranted."

"Your Highness, your father has no such agreement," Valter assures you, but accepts your decision. As you wait for the envoy to arrive, Aural decides to use this time to go over the tax system with you, weighing your advice, as well suggesting his own improvements... Overall important... but very tedious, which gives you an intense gratitude for Aural being able to handle this on a day to day basis. After about fifteen minutes the guard informs you that the envoy has arrived, and the court filters out to let you meet the envoy alone, obviously excluding the guards.

As the last courtier leaves, the envoy enters, exchanging glaces with Valter, before approaching you. One appears to be a centaur, though it's hard to get a look at her features since she is wrapped in cloth and hides covering even her face, but upon closer inspection of her feet you notice they are camel like than horse like. This isn't really surprising, as you've heard that these barbarians had... camel centaurs for lack of a proper word. Either way, she behaves more like she's there for the others protection, staying behind her potential charge, looking around with suspicious eyes, and walking as if she's ready to jump into battle at a moments notice. She has obviously been stripped of all weapons before entering, but that doesn't mean that she's harmless, in fact you wager that her strong lower body could do some serious damage if she becomes so inclined.

The other walked with deliberative movement, her eyes never wavering from your throne as she approached, a pleased smile on her face. This one appears to be some sort of canine girl from her paws, ears, and tail, but seems more... controlled then you heard wolf girls are. Another thing you noticed is that she seems to be wearing more golden jewelry than actual cloth. What little cloth she did wear only seems to cover her large breasts and crotch, though she does seem to have some cloth flapping around her legs that seem to loose to actual count as 'covering' anything. As she gets close enough to the throne, though maintaining a respectful distance, she bows down to the floor on her knees and paws, announcing, "I am Tenii, a Sunal of the Toshii, and I have come to ask your Highness for an audience with my... King. He wishes to discuss peace, trade opportunities, and even a possible alliance. " You've never heard of a Sunal or Toshii before, but you're pretty sure that Sunal is a group or position she belongs to while apparently Toshii is what these barbarians call themselves. Still, you are quite surprised about her etiquette. So far her behavior has been perfect, from the distance away she is to bowing, though she's seem to taken a bit of a spin on that bit, and even to the very direct nature of her message with out unnecessary fluff or ass-kissing. (This is due to the fact that before any more details are discussed a sovereign has to decide whether or not to accept or flat out reject them and send them away at this point, so it's basically a time saving method before the actual appeal phase.)

Yeah, they are rumored to have, because it's not like they have entirely communities that people can go to, but rather there is talk about they dealing with the elves and maybe an outsider seeing a visiting elf, then relaying that information back. BTW, you actually have a fairly widely capable army, at least compared to most of your neighbors, since you in addition to your spearmen, well equipped with heavy armor and metal shields, are heavy infantry with swords and shields, archers, though they are just average unlike Goafun's, and light infantry for ambushing, covering retreats, moving ahead of the army to secure strategic points, and even raiding. You lack cavalry due to your mountainous kingdom. Goafun and Vracsio rely heavily on spearmen for infantry, though Goafun have expert archers. Rathfor has an army similar to yours though includes cavalry.

On the topic of the printing press, maybe so... but don't think those things were around B.C.E. at least commonly. So pretty much all books are going to be handwritten.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

I pictured a lot of heavy soldiers geared toward defending fortifications and then reaching out to punish attackers. But I believe you. And yah, expensive books is fine. They're not going to be anywhere near the cost of the road systems or military budget though, mostly a token gesture similar to that of the celebration. Also, I'm going to assume that lesbian affairs are not punishable by death, they're just ignored since nothing can happen, so Kat is going to be pretty openly bi unless you want me to not do that. Lots of inner thoughts so far, but nothing overt. Since her first child is likely to be the heir apparent, she's holding off on any men for the time being until she can find a good one for an alliance. If we decide to open the herm path, she'll likely keep that a secret so her first child that she births would be the heir. I suppose now would be a good time to ask about contraceptives?

I listen to her, noting how well she knows the proper way to speak and everything else. She's very refined for a barbarian, I'm hoping she's not some sort of elaborate trap. "Tenii, I am willing to have an audience with any leader willing to come to me under a flag of peace. Your offers for trade and alliance also intrigues me. I will meet your King, or equivalent title if it is different. When would you like to bring him, or her I suppose, here?"

Hm, I wonder why they chose now? There's the possibility of trying to take my hand in marriage, I suppose. If they are powerful enough, it might be worth it, although I doubt it. I might have to find a cousin who is unwed, or if they're as powerful as I hope, one of my sisters. Or brother if that's necessary.

The use of demihumans is also an interesting choice. Is their entire tribe composed of them? Could they simply be mixed in some way? The woman is certainly pretty, and the cameltaur isn't bad in a certain way, although the foxgirl is more my taste for a dalliance of some kind. Is their king actually a queen that's a demi? That would be scandalous!

I wonder what they have to trade as well. Deserts are not known for their abundance of resources. I suppose I'd be selling them food and water, maybe weapons. Perhaps they'll act as a buffer state between my own kingdom and the barbarians further out? The Toshii are clearly somewhat civilized if they knew to appear before me to ask for peace rather than try to simply steal what they need.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Heavy soldiers are kind of your bread and butter in the military, but that doesn't mean it's the only thing.
Being openly bi isn't going to get you in trouble in your pagan/mixed with monster girl society... but it's not going to do you any favors with the followers of Taloism. Being openly sexual though can hurt your reputation. Essentially you are expected to first marry a man, then the two of you can add secondary wives, though if either of you sleep with people outside it can be scandalous as it's viewed being either non-committal, irresponsible, as you are not marrying the person for only a one-night stand(this is still ancient times so casual sex isn't really a thing outside actual prostitutes, which are legal) or being weak-willed enough to be seduced, depending on the situation. Of course, that's only if it become public knowledge of course. Contraceptive herbs do exist but are relatively ineffective compared to modern version, having like a 20% fail rate and while more can be taken to increase it's effect, it might lead to becoming barren.

"I used king as it's the most equivalent term for your culture. To us he is called the Nalmash, the uniter of the tribes, the high chieftain. There is little food in our homeland, so previous generations have relied heavily on raiding, hence our reputation. However, the current Nalmash wishes for something more, and has ceased raids while reaching out to the neighboring kingdoms for peace, but most have ignored this call. Even your late father ignored this call," She explains, having not been given permission to raise her head stays in her bow, before adding, "I am glad to see that your Highness is willing to give us a chance." That would explain why this happened now... Envoys were given diplomatic immunity, even from enemy states, though they had to stay within the capital and it didn't necessarily grant them the right to actually had a right to an audience, but it would give them immediate knowledge of a change of leadership.

"As for what we can offer," She starts as she signals to the camel centaur, who removes a bolt of cloth from her... saddlebag? Backpack? As if to shatter your expectations of their wealth, Tenii unrolls it in front of you to show you an abundance of gold and jewels... Wait no, despite having beautiful colors and being translucent, they don't quite look like gems, "There is an ancient civilization, lost to the sands, but have much gold still within their ruins, and we know the location of these ruins. In addition we know how to forge a material I guarantee no one else in this part of the world can... Glass." She again signals her companion, who again removes something from her back, though she seems hesitant to hand this over. It appears to be a jar or an urn, though is transparent, and appears to be filled with water. "This is water from the Oasis Heart, the source of life for us. We give this to you as an offering to pave the way for future friendship. As from when I can bring him, in a month is the earliest I can reasonably promise. I might also suggest that, if your Highness allows it, we discuss the Nalmash and our people in detail... in a more private setting... at your leisure." There was definitely something suggested in her tone, though subtle enough that both parties can wave it off...

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Okay, that makes sense to me. Keep any sex on the downlow, but other women are okay.

My eyes light up at the gold and crystals, and this strange clear clay that they've used for other tasks. Considering my money troubles, I can hope that the kingdoms new source of income will lead to more prosperity. "Yes Tenii, I am willing to meet and trade. I shall have my court begin to account for the food that can be made available for trade, and we should have good estimates by the time your Nalmash arrives. However, I would like to discuss things in a more personal detail after this." I must have my court also look into the veracity of her claims of a new united set of tribes, with access to great wealth. It's possible, if unlikely, that she's an assassin trying to get me alone with her tempting good looks.

If my kingdom is the only one who realizes that barbarian gold spends as easily as civilized gold, well that just gives me the advantage.

"Understood, I will come back ahead of my Nalmash for this discussion, your Highness," she nods slightly, hinder in this by the fact her head is still looking at the floor.

After the envoy was dismissed, Valter came back, asking, "Your Highness, what did that envoy want?"

"She's offering to trade, gold and crystals for food stuffs. It seems like quite the deal to me, observe the things she's left for us. I would like to verify some things though. She's said that there's been a uniting of the clans in the desert. Right now, they'd like to try and trade for what they want rather than storm in and take it. That would certainly make things easier on all parties, and might free up some of the men on guard duty if it works. This could make for a very powerful alliance, assuming we can talk our other neighbors into not being outraged. We will not likely be able to affect the opinions of the Imperials, but I'm concerned with the Kingdom and the Union becoming more hostile. I was honestly just expecting a chance to bribe them to focus on the Empire over ourselves, not as a chance to build an alliance. I'm also concerned that they may try to seal a peace deal with a marriage with me. This would be momentous, but I don't think it's worth the hand of a queen, I must look into a few near cousins or possibly a sister if they push it. Best to be prepared." I ramble out, letting my thoughts be voiced as my mind races.

My experience with my tutor has left some habits of thinking out loud for her to verify my reasonings, and I hope I did not alienate him by being so forward. I glance at him to make sure.

Could you put the data packets in the first post in some spoilers? I don't want to lose track of them. Also, this is going to be more like a Civ game where the people don't try to backstab PC for personal gain, right? Just making sure so I know what to concern myself with.

He listens patiently until you wind down, before voicing his concerns, "... I'm not fond of this idea, your Highness. I don't trust these barbarians and neither will our neighbors... *Sighs* However this is ultimately you decision... I'll make sure these gifts are properly examined. Is there anything else you require of me?"

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

By data packets I'm assuming you mean things like profiles. I can do that.
There will be a bit of both, depending on the personalities involved, so keep an eye on the shadier people. Most of the time people will deal with you in an attempt to further their own goals. For example, Tenii, she isn't really wanting to betray you, rather she has a goal that requires your cooperation to achieve, hence why she wants you to talk to her in private.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

I wanted to make sure that most of the characters are mostly trustworthy. Intrigue is fine, but I was thinking I'd be managing the civilization more than dealing with court spies. As I've stated, Kat is suspicious of her anyway and is holding her at arms length.

"I don't know enough about this kingly Nalmash of theirs to get a feel for his goals either. If he wants what is best for his people, I think we can trust him to a degree. If he wants glory and riches and slaves, we cannot. I think this is too elaborate of a setup to be purely about trying to get in a dig at us. Simply assassinating me would completely destroy any chance of peace for a few generations, and might even make the next queen decide to ally with the Empire to punish them. It simply doesn't fit to me, but I wanted to get more information before making a decision. If their coin is good, then their nature as barbarians is irrelevant. If not, dickering may buy time to finish the roads to reinforce the new territory." I try to make my stance clear. If we can trust them, the gold is worth it. If we cannot, I don't know what to do, but it will likely end the peace.
