"Dozens of years ago, the first "machine" was created. Though he still considered himself human at the time, Hanzo Kotori was a soldier who had many of his limbs and organs replaced by synthetic components after a terrible battle, limbs of wood and metal, fueled electricity and magic. He attempted to re-integrate into society at first, but quickly saw that he himself no longer fit in with the people he did before, he no longer had the friends he had, the life he had. He had become someone else, Kunio, he named himself. He began to study the technology that had created him on his own and abandoned his post in the army, exiling himself to lands unknown, never to be seen or heard from again. As the use of technology to replace lost limbs began to become more prevalent, more "machines" began to emerge among the population, most warriors or samurai saved by this new inventive technology, though these stood with their masters, for a time.

One day, Kunio returned from the void, as a prophet. Calling upon all of the "machines" in Nippon to unite under his banner, under a new name "Kikai", they would leave Nippon and form their own land, their own people, elsewhere. Infuriated with the movement, the late King, Soichiro Izanagi, ordered his soldiers to stop the meeting and murder all "Kikai" they could find. That became known as the first "Purge", with the creation of new Kikai being wholly outlawed, a long dispute broke out between Kunio and his "Kikai" and the King and his subjects. Though empowered by their own advancements, coupled with the discovery of firearms made by Kunio on his exile, awarded the "Kikai" with considerable victories, one of them being the murder of Soichiro Izanagi by Kunio's hands on the battlefield.

It has been 20 years since then and Soichiro's son, Ken Izanagi, now sits on the throne, advised by the Oni, Pang Xin. Today, Kunio and Ken sign a treaty of peace and understanding, hopefully settling once and for all the conflict which has taken many lives ever since it started. In honor of this event, Ken has organized an enormous tournament at the town where the treaty is being held, Otenjo. Though the headlines seem to hint at peace and happiness, there's a dark cloud hovering above this event. All involved are uneasy. The next few days will decide the future of Nippon and all that live within it."

SYSTEM

So, let me get this out of the way first and foremost. This RP will use a system that uses the following Attributes for all characters in it.

Note: The system is prone to changes until July 1st as balancing is made, If you make your character before then and the change affects you, I'll let you know. BP costs are likely not to change.

OHGODWHAT-

Easy there, it's not as complicated as it looks. So, essentially, you have all of these stats, alright? All of them begin at LEVEL 3 by default. All of these skills will be ranked by levels. With the classification for each level being as follows:

LEVEL 0 - Abysmal

LEVEL 1 - Poor

LEVEL 2 - Novice

LEVEL 3 - Average

LEVEL 4 - Adept

LEVEL 5 - Expert

LEVEL 6 - Master

LEVEL 7+ - Legendary

When you do an activity related to one of the skills mentioned above, I will roll for you a number of 10-sided dice equal to your level in the skill. So if you're trying to pick a lock and you have LEVEL 4 in Thievery, I will roll four 10-sided dice. We will be using a variant of the Storyteller system, as such, for each 10-sided dice rolled, results of 6 or above is considered a SUCCESS. And results of 5 or below is considered a BLANK. A 10 is a CRITICAL SUCCESS. And a 1 is a FAIL. A CRITICAL SUCCESS is worth 2 normal SUCCESSES. A FAIL nulls out one of your SUCCESSES and adds a NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECT to the end result. A level 0 in a skill means you instantly fail it.

Following the lock picking example. I roll 4 10-sided dice for your lock pick attempt. You get: 1,4,6,10. This is a total of 2 SUCCESSES. (-1, 0, 1, 2) Which means you succeeded on opening up the lock, but there's a FAIL in there, which means that, even though you succeeded on opening the lock, something bad happened, so your lock pick broke. (Or you made too much noise unlocking the door, broke the lock, etc.)

Simple enough, right?

But Nescafe, how do I increase or decrease levels on these skills?

Good question, this will be done through the Quality System. Each character will have 5 BP (Build Points) to spread out to pick their QUALITIES. QUALITIES represent your character's background and tendencies. While I do have a pretty extensive list of qualities already available, I am more than willing to discuss special qualities to tend the specific needs of a character you had in mind. However it is imperative your character have strengths AND weaknesses.

QUALITIES increase and decrease your levels on the skills above, but cost Build Points. Qualities aren't simple "+1's" to your Skills, all of them have positive and negative effects to them which will help you build your character. So, by example, a SAMURAI quality and raises your AGILITY, ATHLETICS, ENDURANCE, FIGHTING, KNOWLEDGE, MARKSMANSHIP, STATUS and WARFARE skills by 1. But lowers your DECEPTION, STEALTH, SURVIVAL and THIEVERY by 2.

All right...What about combat, how does that work?

When you attempt to attack someone, you roll the related Weapon Skill (Fighting or Marksmanship) against their Agility Skill. If Agility wins, the attack is dodged, if the Weapon Skill wins, the attack is a hit. Then we move on to damage calculation.

Damage calculation varies by weapon type. But generally it's done by: WEAPON BASE DAMAGE + WEAPON'S ATHLETICS MODIFIER - DEFENDER'S ARMOR MODIFIER. Different weapons have different ways of dealing damage. Some have high base damage, but are not affected heavily by the user's strength, or vice versa. Some shave off the defender's armor, so on and so forth. There will be a full list of Weapon Types and their properties below. Can I make my own weapon typ-? Yes, but talk it through with me first.

Once you figure out how much damage the attack has dealt, it is time to subtract that from the defender's HEALTH.

Look back up at the skill list real quick, you'll see two things I underlined STAMINA and RESOLVE. We'll be using those two terms a lot on this part, alongside with HEALTH.

All player characters are locked at 10 HEALTH. STAMINA is equal to ENDURANCE LEVEL X 10. If either HEALTH or STAMINA hits 0, the character is defeated.

Once a character loses HEALTH, as long as it never hits 0. The character's HEALTH will return to 10 in the next turn by draining the missing points from STAMINA, this can drop the character's STAMINA to 0, in which case, they are defeated.

If a character's HEALTH would be dropped to 0 by an attack, they can roll RESOLVE. A will check which will give them extra HEALTH points according to how many successes they get on the roll, with the drawback of each of them costing two points of STAMINA instead of 1.

So...Is there any point in fighting with little or no armor?

Yes. Heavier armor comes with drawbacks, first off, it's expensive. Second, armor drains your stamina PER TURN. The heavier it is, the more stamina you lose per turn. Third, heavier armor also impairs your ability to dodge, each rank of armor also cancels out any SUCCESSES you get on Dodge rolls. In conclusion, putting on armor means that hits are not going to hurt as much, but rises the chance of you actually getting hit and forces you to try and finish fights quickly, before you run out of STAMINA.

Weapon Durability

Say whaaaat. Yes, weapons in this RP have durability. The way it works is, every weapon basically have it's own "HP" of sorts. Which they use up every time you land a strike against an enemy (Using armor can also increase the amount of damage someone's weapon takes while attacking you!) When that durability reaches 0, the weapon becomes unusable. It can be repaired back to full durability at any point you get it to a blacksmith, at the cost of half of its full price.

1 BP - Farmer - You were born in the fields, most would think you would live and die in there, but something within you always made you stood out among your peers, though no matter where you're headed you can't deny your origins. (Agility +1, Animal Handling + 2, Athletics +1, Cunning -1, Deception -1, Endurance +1, Knowledge -1, Persuasion -1, Warfare -1)

1 BP - Artisan - Since you were small, you were taught to craft. You know how to temper a blade and how it works, how to make a beautiful painting, how to write an inspiring poem, how to build a house or a gun. You often don't get much respect, but you know that, without you, this country would fall apart. (Athletics + 1, Awareness + 2, Cunning + 1, Deception - 2, Endurance +1, Fighting + 1, Knowledge + 2, Marksmanship +1, Persuasion - 2, Stealth - 2, Survival + 1, Thievery - 1, Warfare + 1, Will + 1) You are also able to repair your own weapons, provided you have the tools for it, at half the usual price. So a quarter of the weapon's full price.

1 BP - Thief/Bard/Prostitutes (Hinin) - You live in the streets, scraping by every day by taking what others earned or working yourself off for little recompense. Hey, if they let you take it, it means you earned it yourself, right? You're also proficient at the occasional fighting, especially when the local thief-takers get a little too close to your tail. (Agility +1, Athletics +1, Awareness +1, Cunning +2, Deception +2, Knowledge +1, Status -2, Stealth +2, Thievery +2, Warfare - 1)

1 BP - Poacher/Butcher/Tanner/Hunter/Executioner (Eta) - You deal in death and in the preparation of flesh, be it of animals or people. According to the teachings of Buddhism, this makes you filthy and unclean. But let's be honest, it's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it. (Agility +1, Animal Handling +2, Athletics +1, Awareness +1, Cunning -1, Deception -1, Endurance +1, Healing +1, Knowledge -1, Status -1, Survival +2, Warfare -2)

2 BP - Ashigaru - Though you're no noble warrior, you've spent a good deal of your life in the battlefield. Maybe you're a mercenary for hire or just a veteran soldier. One way or another, battle is the one thing you know. (Agility +1, Animal Handling +1, Athletics +1, Cunning -1, Deception -1, Endurance +1, Fighting +1, Knowledge -1, Marksmanship +1, Persuasion -1, Stealth -1, Thievery -1, Warfare +1, Will +1)

3 BP - Clergy - You are a person of faith, when you were young, you were taught how to read and write poetry and holy scriptures. You devoted your body and soul to the gods and to the good of other people. (Awareness +1, Cunning +1, Deception -2, Healing +2, Knowledge +2, Persuasion +2, Status +1, Stealth -2, Thievery -2, Warfare -2, Will +2)

3 BP - Samurai - Noble of birth or simply someone who distinguished themselves in the past, you were raised and trained to a position of military power. And though you were raised for fighting you are no stranger to the court's game of smiles and lies, though you despise the game as it goes against the teachings of bushido. With a new period coming over, you can't help but shake off the feelings the lords are growing steadily less interested in your presence. Who needs a trained warrior when you can just give any peasant a gun? (Agility +1, Animal Handling +1, Athletics +1, Cunning +1, Deception -2, Endurance +1, Fighting +2, Knowledge +1, Marksmanship +2, Status +1, Stealth -2, Survival -2, Thievery -2, Warfare +2, Will +1)

3 BP - Merchant - Money. Money is your blood. Your weapon. Your life. Money is what you know, how to make more of it and how to make others devoid of it. Needless to say, the focus on the mind left you wanting when it comes to brawn. 4 BP - Lord - You were born a rich noble of a high-ranking, with close relations to the shoguns and magistrates. You often avoid open battles, you fight your battles with a sharp tongue and a sharp mind, not with a blade, doesn't mean you don't know how to handle one though. (Awareness +2, Cunning +2, Deception +2, Knowledge +2, Persuasion +2, Status +2, Stealth -2, Survival -3, Warfare +3)

Race Qualities

Only stat info here, if you want more specific explanations on how each work, check the races spoiler further below.

1 BP - Human - Status +1, Will +1

2 BP - Hengekyokai - Pick two skills, you receive +1 to each of them when in half-yokai form. +0 when in human form. And +2 when in full yokai form. Status locks at 1, regardless of other bonuses.

2 BP - Koropokguru - Agility +1, Deception +1, Stealth +1 and Thievery +1. Athletics -2

2 BP - Shizen Foku - Pick one skill to master and one skill to forsake. The skill you master gets +3, up to a maximum of +7. The skill you forsake is now at 0.

2 BP - Oni - Athletics +1, Endurance +1, Fighting +1, Will +1. Persuasion -1, Stealth -1.

5 BP - Kikai - All stats set to 1. However, you start the game with 30.000 mon and you gain the ability to spend 1000 mon to raise one of your stats by 1. (Except Status, Status is locked at 0.)

Destiny Qualities

2 BP - Family Heirloom - Your character begins the RP with a heavily damaged Level 5 Quality weapon of their choice. (It will be at 1/5th of its maximum durability. Can't be a firearm.)

2 BP - Sensei - Your character is the mentor of a small abandoned martial arts dojo. This provides no bonuses at first, but for each five students you get in your dojo, you get a daily income of 1000 mon and +1 Fighting or Marksmanship, depending on what your dojo specializes.

2 BP - Pacifist Savior - Healing is raised to +6, if it was already at +6, it is raised to +7. However, both your Fighting and Marksmanship are lowered to 0.

3 BP - Demigod - You're not sure why or how, but you feel the watchful presence of a god protecting and watching over you. Pick two skills at +4 or higher and raise them by +1.

2 BP - Lust for Wealth - Whenever there's a chance for profit involved, your character gains a +1 to all rolls. When there isn't, they get a -1 to all rolls.

2 BP - Champion's Blood - You live for the joy of battle be it victory or defeat. Everytime you win a battle, your STAMINA goes to max. If you get defeated in a battle, your Stamina gets its maximum cut by half until you win again.

Weapon Types

All weapon types vary under the following parameters:
Damage: Base damage of the weapon
Scaling: How much your Athletics Modifier affects the weapon. This is defined by a value that varies from +0 to +6. Which is the maximum extra damage you can gain from athletics with this weapon.
Piercing: How well the armor does against armor. It varies from 0 to 5, to show how many points of armor the weapon ignores.
Durability: How many strikes the weapon can dish out before being damaged.
Quality: How valuable the weapon is, high quality improves the rest of the weapon's stats according to the data below. Quality varies from 1 to 5. 1 being shoddy and simply, while 5 being a master artisan's masterpiece. A weapon's quality also influences its price.

RACES

HUMAN

The ruling race of Nippon. Humans have been known to hold most if not all positions of power in both actuality and history. Though surprisingly uninteresting in comparison to other races when it comes to special abilities. The most distinctive feature of humans, or so they would tell you, is their strong sense of will. They come in a variety of colors, both for skin, hair and eyes. The most common in Nippon, however, are yellow skin, black hair and brown eyes. Prejudice in-between human subtypes is unheard of, though Xenophobia is another matter entirely.

Humans tend to be around 5'7 (Or 170 cm) tall and tend to live from 40 to 60 years. Wealthier humans have been known to live longer than that however, thanks to strong will and recent advancements in medicine.

HENGEYOKAI (Half-human half-animal shapeshifters, who often suffer prejudice.)

The Hengeyokai, as their name implies, are the children between humans and Yokai. Though they are civilized and more than allowed to live among the common folk, it would be naive to say that they live as equals. Many consider Hengeyokai to be monsters or abominations and will openly treat them worse for it. As such, Hengeyokai are often kept from climbing up the social ladder, though there have been stories of some who managed to raise to the level of lords and even samurai. All Hengeyokai are shape shifters, they can adopt three different forms. Their natural form is that of a hybrid, they look mostly human but usually have a few yokai or animal like characteristics which give them out. They can also adopt a fully human form for blending in, though it is painful to keep up for longer than an hour. Alternatively, they can embrace their yokai blood and turn into great beasts, according to what kind of yokai they come from. While in this form, hengeyokai lose a bit of their grasp on their own sanity, they tend to become excessively violent, lusty or paranoid, again depending on their ancestry. ENTERING BEAST FORM IS CONSIDERED DANGEROUS AND ILLEGAL, DOING IT IN PUBLIC WILL GET YOU ARRESTED.

Hengeyokai's characteristics vary too wildly for proper statistics. Kitsune hengeyokai are known to be just as tall as humans, but live for hundreds of years, by example. While bear hengeyokai are known to be enormous brutes, though short lived.

KOROPOKGURU / PONCLES (Nimble, forest-dwelling dwarves, the tallest being up to 1 foot tall.)

Koropogkguru or Poncles, are a sprite-like race no bigger than a large insect (so they are often mistaken for insects). Most dwell in villages built inside tree stumps.

Poncles are bioluminescent humanoids. They wear clothes made from leaves and other natural materials and helmets in the shape of parts of insects. The helmets shade their bodies and faces from anyone larger than they are, which contributes to their bug-like appearance. Each Poncle glows a different colour, but they also change colour depending on their emotions (ie: red when angry, etc.). Poncles age like humans, but seem to stay the same height their whole life. They also live much longer than humans, some Poncles claiming to have lived for over hundreds of years.

Poncles also have the ability to speak with many if not all of the animals of nature. They also have great physical strength for their size, as they can jump high enough to get the attention of larger beings and throw things which are many times their size and weight. These traits put into question the theory of Poncles having musculature approximately equal to humans, but compressed into a small body frame. Nevertheless, the ratio between their physical strength and size are reminiscent of several types of insects, such as ants.

They're usually very small, the tallest of Poncles can reach up to 1 foot of height if they stand at the tip of their toes.

SHIZEN FOKU (Basically half-dryads, who may be aligned to: Bamboo, River, Sea, Life, Death, etc.)

While Hengeyokai are seen as children of humans and Yokai, Shizen Foku are seen as the children between humans and Gods. Not all are necessarily born out of coitus between the two, by the way. Some gods prefer to simply impregnate a woman through magic and let them bear their child on their own. Shizen Foku's appearance varies wildly depending on what kind of god or spirit they are associated with, Sea Shizen can have scales or fish-like characteristics, while a Bamboo Shizen's skin may be slightly green and feel like wood. They tend to be very attached to their element, as well. A Death Shizen, by example, can feel whenever someone nearby dies or is close to death. Likewise, a Life Shizen is always aware of every single new life that is brought into the world. Love Shizen tend to be constantly filled with the warm caress of lovers exchanging pleasantries, so on and so forth.

Shizen are usually seen as either messengers of the gods or bad omens. As such, they are treated with fear and respect alike and are commonly seen occupying positions in the church or high-ranking military offices. Despite these characteristics, Shizen rarely, if ever, have any real contact with the gods who birthed them, most just want to live their own lives normally, though it can be hard to fit in when you're a fire Shizen and have a fire pit on your head.

Shizen inherit one thing from their celestial parents, though. They can't die of old age or contract any disease, they also don't age past twenty years, but a knife through the gut will bleed them as well as anyone else.

ONI (Ogres, with skin varying from gray, to blue, to red.)

Appearances of oni vary widely but they're usually gigantic ogre-like creatures with sharp claws, wild hair, and two long horns growing from their heads. They are humanoid for the most part, but occasionally, they are shown with unnatural features such as odd numbers of eyes or extra fingers and toes. Their skin may be any number of colors, but red and blue are particularly common. Oni are known to be incredibly strong, but not very smart, though the latter is entirely prejudice, the former is far from being just supposition. Oni are known to live on mountains in small tribes, usually isolated from human towns and the like, as they tend to stand out a fair bit and not get along all that well with humans. Surprisingly, however, most Oni are welcome to come and go into towns as they please, in no small part due to the presence of an Oni as the current advisor of the King.

Onis tend to be around seven feet tall or 2,1 meters. They are known to live around 30 to 40 years. Because their anatomy is different to that of humans, they can't make use of many of today's medicinal advancements that well, keeping their life span equal among all social classes.

KIKAI(Only partly organic, any race that is modified by synthetic prosthetics is qualified as this race and loses any other benefits related to the race they used to be.)

With the war still technically going on between Kunio and Soichiro's heir, Ken Izanagi, all Kikai are, for what its worth, considered enemies of all living beings and are feared and hated alike. Their appearances vary wildly dependent on what they were before becoming Kikai and what kind of prosthetics they possess. However, all Kikai possess an exposed "Power Core" which holds their soul, substitutes their heart and powers their body and prosthetics. Though Cores can be damaged and be worn with time, they can be easily repaired with the proper tools and some time and can never truly be destroyed. As such, all Kikai are technically immortal. Kikai are known to use resources to upgrade themselves to whatever they need. Kikai have endless possibilities and endless options, but no social rights.

Kikai can be made out of any other races: humans, hengeyokai, oni or Poncles (Even Shizen!). But lose all benefits or skills related to that race, the only thing they retain is the appearance of their organic parts. As such, Kikai Hengeyokai cannot transform, and are stuck in hybrid form. Kikai also get access to Power Armor, which is a big mechanical suit that runs on the power of their core. The armor can have built in blades, firearms and blunt weapons. During the war, there were even reports of Kikai who attached contraptions to their armor which allowed them to fly around like a firework.


FAQ

X seems a bit overpowered/underpowered.

This is a big system. It is prone to balancing issues. I tried to make it as balanced as I could from the get go, but there are bound to be balance changes which I may or may not need to do. Let me know about it, I'll see about balancing it if it needs to.

Making a Lord as anything Non-human is basically impossible...Is this intentional?

Yes. I want to hammer down that the dominant class in regards to rights and positions of power belongs to humans. If you want to make a non-human Lord, we can discuss it via PM, but the character will have to forsake some other skills and have somewhat specific background checklists to fill.

Kikai can advance via money...How can non-machines get better?

Questing and story progression. It's a significantly slower rate though.

How dangerous is it being Low Status...?

Low score Status doesn't necessarily mean your character will get kicked around in the streets. It's a measurement of how people around them perceive them and think of them in general terms, disregarding personal feelings.

Can my family heirloom be a firearm?

No.


I don't like any of the available background options and I can't think of one I'd like in its place, nothing really fits what I had in mind.

You don't NEED to pick a Background quality, the only quality you strictly need to have one of is Race. But if you want to not have a Background quality, you are allowed to.

Backstory:
As a youth, Ryuuji grew up within a samurai family under the Shimada clan. His own bloodline a simple branch family with few asperations than to serve their lord in combat and cultivate farms in times of peace. Ryuuji however was not born in a time of peace and when the war with the Kikai broke out he was on the front lines during the first few organized assaults. The lord's armies were quickly broken, unprepared to face the might of the machinized warriors during the first bouts of combat. Ryuuji was lost and presumed dead after the first week of the twenty year's war. Unbeknownst to his family his body was taken, heavily modified and outfitted with a power core. His family blade which he'd carried into battle was implanted into his arm, ever ready now to cleave flesh from bone from those he once served.
Further enhancements were placed into Ryuuji's body designed to assist in the breaking of enemy captives and interrogation. Whips, tendrils, needles and other such tools meant to cause pain and humiliation rather than be effective in battle were readily available with but a thought. He found his new body was quite capable at convincing others to see things his way, even if it took him a fair bit of time. So now that the peace treaty has been signed, Ryuuji has been put in a strange situation, no longer meant to carry out his sole function of decimating human lives and breaking those that survive, he's left within the walls of Otenjo after the signing without much direction as to what to do with himself. Seeing there's a competition being held that involves physically dominating humans, he feels a sort of connection and goes to sign himself up. Hoping that he could at least find peace in the bliss of combat once again.

Backstory:
Kentata never knew his father, and his mother was a prostitute, so everything he ever learned about being a man came from the clients and the streets. Growing up he was always jealous of children with happy wealthy families, and so e turned to bullying to deal with these feelings. As he grew he got bigger and meaner until a fateful meeting with some men who saw some use to a big kid who was all too happy to throw his weight around, and Kentata was more than willing to take money for the kinds of things he was inclined to do anyway. He found himself on the wrong side of the law more times than he could count, but he always found a way to manage, and it was good money so whatever.
As he grew into adulthood he mellowed out some but never cut out the common street thug routine. Of course he found himself more often than not spending most of his money on girls and drink. He was finding himself strapped for cash and wondering what to do about it when he heard of the tournament being held in Otenjo. It sounded like a good oppurtunity. Lots of people meant lots of money and lots of oppurtunities for a guy like him. The chance was too good to pass up, so he collected his meager belongings and got ready to make the trek to Otenjo.

So now that the peace treaty has been signed, Ryuuji has been put in a strange situation, no longer meant to carry out his sole function of decimating human lives and breaking those that survive, he's left within the walls of Otenjo after the signing without much direction as to what to do with himself. Seeing there's a competition being held that involves physically dominating humans, he feels a sort of connection and goes to sign himself up. Hoping that he could at least find peace in the bliss of combat once again.

Backstory:
Kentata never knew his father, and his mother was a prostitute, so everything he ever learned about being a man came from the clients and the streets. Growing up he was always jealous of children with happy wealthy families, and so e turned to bullying to deal with these feelings. As he grew he got bigger and meaner until a fateful meeting with some men who saw some use to a big kid who was all too happy to throw his weight around, and Kentata was more than willing to take money for the kinds of things he was inclined to do anyway. He found himself on the wrong side of the law more times than he could count, but he always found a way to manage, and it was good money so whatever.
As he grew into adulthood he mellowed out some but never cut out the common street thug routine. Of course he found himself more often than not spending most of his money on girls and drink. He was finding himself strapped for cash and wondering what to do about it when he heard of the tournament being held in Otenjo. It sounded like a good oppurtunity. Lots of people meant lots of money and lots of oppurtunities for a guy like him. The chance was too good to pass up, so he collected his meager belongings and got ready to make the trek to Otenjo.

Backstory: Kagomi doesn't remember either of her parents... her first memory is being alone in the cold night... running from those she just knew wanted to hurt her. She was different and for many years the village she lived in called her "Gomi" and she assumed that was her name... it was only years later she realized the word was not her name, but meant "Trash" which was what they saw her as. She left the village when she was old enough to travel... having heard stories of places where others like herself could be treated well and live happy lives. She found in time this was merely a trick, leading her to being bound up and carted off towards who knows where for "entertainment". Luckily she never had to find out what that was, managing to use what skills she'd picked up from living on the streets to pick the lock to her cage and slip off... managing to get her hands on some of their money before slipping off. Since then she's continued to live as such, adjusting her "Name" into something she thinks at least sounds cuter while knowing now to hide her "unnatural" attributes with a cloak... and if someone tries to accuse her of being what she is she can quickly switch to her human form the moment they try to go for her hood. It's worked pretty well and she's become quite the good thief. Having recently made it into the town where she knew some big treaty was apparently being signed at, she knew she had the chance to score really big so long as she was careful... those idiots at the tournament would be so focused on the fights that she'd be able to do as she pleased with their pouches.

Backstory: Alone in the world with no one to care for her. That was how Sivir was born into the world and how she believes it should be. After killing her mother through child-birth due to the unexpected proportions of her entire body, she was abandoned in the woods by the village out of fear of what she could become. Cast into the wilderness as a baby, had she been a human she would have surely perished, but as a Shizen Foku and one so physically defined by her mixed heritage Sivir managed to eke out an existence until she reach maturity. Her top-half was mostly useless in the beginning as the scales hadn't grown over her skin yet and the fingers couldn't tear into flesh but her bottom-half, the portion given to her by her divine father was quite capable of hunting and harvesting meat for the both of them. As a child, her divine half was about the size of a overly large wolf and relied on instinct to keep them fed and alive. Because she lacked the knowledge on how to stalk prey, she opted for finding the dens of predators and slaughtering them for their meat and shelter, pummeling them into a fine paste that was easier for her to eat. She moved up the food-chain of the forest as she grew and matured, going from wolves to bears to finally humans. She found them to be curious things as they looked a bit like her but lacked the other half that made her, her but she ate them when hunger striked, seeing nothing special about them and having no reason to let meat go to waste. Most of them put up pretty good fights, many of them trying to attack her with tools as opposed to their bodies, tools that she collected and studied out of curiosity. Swords, bows, armor, arrows, clubs, and hammers. She learned the name of these things through snatches of words and built on assumptions as she fought them and they screamed their last. They intrigued her quite a bit since they did look similar to her and at heart she did crave a connection with someone or anything even if their only use to her was to be a food source.

It took a few more years and not eating every human she came across, but eventually Sivir learned how to speak their language and portions of their culture and history. She learned most of it from one source, a middle-aged blacksmith from Otenjo who had traveled far in search of better ores to smelt before being captured and beat by Sivir. He had managed to plead his case before she could do him in by showing her the blueprints for different types of weapons he had been working on, as well as catching and cooking her dinner from a few rabbits. He fed her meat, better than any she had before and taught her things about the world that she never knew, things about her own origin. The man told her that her physique couldn't possibly be of Hengeyokai, Oni, or the Koropogkguru, meaning that she had to be a Shizen Foku and as such the offspring of a might entity that humans called "gods". The blacksmith taught Sivir much and fed her well so when he asked her if she wished to accompany him back to his town she agreed, eager to learn more about her race and the world she lived in.

Civilization was quite different from what Sivir had been used to. For one thing, everyone always stared but it didn't always mean they were trying to intimidate her or were planning on attacking. It unnerved and frustrated her to no end as outright attacks were not only frowned upoun but could bring down the entire wrath of the human pack on one of they weren't careful. Prey lived and hunted together in numbers large enough to be a threat to any predator that dared to cull them, meaning that Sivir couldn't just eat one or two as she pleased. These places of gathering for humans or as they were called, "villages" weren't only full of humans but their "laws" as well, immaterial lines of territory that weren't to be crossed unless one wanted to be punished by others. They were everywhere and even a predator like Sivir was expected to obey them all! There were ones for clothing, appearance, phsycial territory, pecking-order, respect and a hundred of other things that Sivir had never heard of. Food could be hunted but most humans bought their's with currency, a worthless concept that is given worth somehow. As confusing and ridiculous as the concept was, at least it made an iota of sense since one could earn it through natural skill or useful services, like what the blacksmith required. It was tough to adjust to all of it but the blacksmith helped and sheltered her, providing lessons in etiquette and expected behavior in return for her helping around in the forge.

The forge was where Sivir discovered her affinity for fire and the gifts that came with it. An extreme resistance to fire, innate and exact knowledge on how hot the flames were, and being able to stoke a fire by placing her hands inside of it, were some of the few abilities that arose once Sivir began spending time around the forge and fire. For her, the flames were comforting, filling her large body with a warmth that she had only encountered before after the hardest of battles. when covered and blood and hungry for more. They filled an emptiness inside of her that the most filling of foods couldn't and the more time she spent around the forge, the more connected she felt to her core self. But she didn't have this epiphany until after she was visited by her father. He arrived in her dream; tall, majestic, mighty, bathed in an aura of flames and faithful to his nature. He didn't talk at all, offered no symbols of regret for allowing her abandonment, or any sign of love. Instead he guided her in the creation of her birthright. Accepting his willing and allowing herself to be put in a trance, Sivir with the aid of her father worked the forge for an entire day, her four hands working together flawlessly as she smelted, twisted and shaped metal into what was wished of it. By the end the apron that she wore had been burned off and a thick layer of soot covered her entire body, but now she had a physical connection to her divine father.

Sivir had forged a kanabo, a mighty one at that. It was large enough that her lower body could wield it with two hands if needed but could just as comfortably use one hand as well, while requiring both of her hands of her upper body to use effectively. Solid metal with pointed nubs going down its length and a red sheen to make Sivir's own skin, it was a monster of a weapon boasting substantial weight and lethality, capable of breaking a cow's spine in half with one swing according to the test she performed much to chagrin of her blacksmith teacher and the farmer across the river. That has been the only real test that Sivir used it for, as she's unwilling to jeopardize her steady supply of well-cooked meat, shelter, currency and her life to test it out against well-armored and trained warriors, or as humans called them, mercenaries and samurais. Despite many offers to rough up or kill other humans for extra currency or meat, Sivir has been unwilling to partake in the senseless violence that humans and other groups partake in against their own, despite her own confidence of success should she give into the urge for a good fight. For now she's content to learn what she can from her master and hone her "human skills" in hopes of one day being capable of taking over the forge once the man who took her in eventually dies. That being said, Sivir doesn't forget what she is, a predator playing among prey and as such rarely allows someone to intimidate her or do as they please when within of her territory, which includes the smithy. A few customers have found themselves almost on the receiving end of a four-armed beatdown for insulting her or her master's creations. Her teacher is the only one that she even begins to show an iota of respect towards and she has been known to go out of her way to please the man who took her in and taught her everything.

Backstory:

Miho comes from a rural Samurai family, her father once lauded as a pinnacle of honour and tradition for forgoing wealth for duty. At one time honour, loyalty and great deeds was all the family needed, at one time even the late King Soichiro Izanagi had sent his son Ken to study at their Dojo. Now, the wealthier Samurai families make snide comments behind closed door about a poor, old man who clings to the past.

Without any sons of his own, the honour of family came to rest of Miho and her father made sure she would not disappoint in any regard. If she was going to carry the family name and school on her shoulders she would have to do so as any man would. Training alongside the men at her father's school, she was pushed harder than them, never noticing the jealous eyes or lustful gazes on her athletic figure. It is rumoured even Ken Izanagi once lusted after his Master's daughter.

That too changed with fortunes of the war and Ken Izanagi took the throne. Who needed to master the sword when there was the gun and without the draw of Izanagi patronage the school fell out of relevance. While it broke her father's heart, her mother was secretly delighted, hoping to regain her daughter from the warrior she'd been shaped into. This to came to naught, she was too strong willed for many to see her as a wife (as she had been taught to be) and family to could raise no significant dowry to attract wealthier families.

Recently her father received a summons to the king, the excitement breathing new life into the man. Assuring himself that his former student had not forgotten about him after all and with news of a big tournament on the horizon, her father is sure things are returning to the old ways, and who better to advise the king on such matters than him. As requested on the invitation, Miho as heir of the family name and school is to dutifully accompany her father on the trip.

Backstory: As far back as she could remember, Nori has been told she as a good puppy... at least to those who are aware of what exactly she is. Growing up, Nori had plenty of control of switching between her forms, going into her bestial form whenever she was feeling playful and wanted to have fun. All it took was to place a mirror in front of her and eventually she tired herself out. As she grew older, her blood and heritage start to grow into something she never expected, thus her time spent as a dog person grew sparse as more people entered her life... especially those who absolutely hated her kind. With the laws in place that forbids the transformations into her beast form, along with the discrimination of her overall kind hasn't sit well for the hengekyokai and has gone out of her way to do something to make it more accessible for her kind to be like everyone else. She longed for when it was simply her mother and the small village that tended to her growing up, happily getting along and spending peaceful days away from all the fighting and prejudices happening across the land.

This doesn't stop Nori from getting involved in the wars. It turns out that her father, the yokai, was quite the vicious beast that happen to be quite a charmer, wooing women wherever he went... who also got caught up in some battles before his eventual demise. Nori never really got to know of her father before eventually getting herself enlisted into the army herself and fighting alongside other humans and the like. Most of the time it was a test of endurance dealing with the slurs and bitter comments from her fellow soldiers, including from her superiors, along with learning to pose as a human from time to time that really strains her body, unlike her beast form. In fact when she did have time to turn into a dog human, it was so out of the way and for so brief that it feels orgasmic to be something that society frowns upon.

This does provide Nori with valuable experience, toughening her up once the battling was over and she was relieved of her duty as a soldier. Her main goal now is to find her place in the big city and see to it about fixing up the prejudice about her kind. Yes she knows that most yokai are absolute monsters, but it's not like everyone else are perfect little angels. She wants to find some sanctuary and find people who she can trust, who treat her no differently than anyone else and have all the good hengekyokai live a peaceful life that don't involve hiding in the shadows. A chance for all of them to live in harmony, to work together and build a whole new community that accepts everyone. It's a pipe dream at this point, and it's one that Nori will be willing to fight for!

Inventory: Kimono (Clothing) - Yaena's kimono is tailored to be more revealing than the traditional outfit, something that can make its scandalous in the eyes of some and alluring in those of others.

Tessen - Bladed Fan - Quality*400 mon - originally belonging to her mother from her courtesan days, Yaena took this fan as a memory of her parent, soon discovering the simple mechanism that sprung sharp claw-like blades from its otherwise innocent and exquisitely-drawn frame. Finding it to be not only of meticulous quality but also a perfect concealed weapon, she has kept it with her throughout the years. The blades have dulled after so many decades of carrying it around - it was crafted by humans after all, and not meant to be used for such amount of time - though Yaena is still reluctant to part with it.

Backstory: Yaena was born a rather long time ago by human standards, though she is not old at all for a kitsune hengeyokai. She used to live in the forest with her mother, and her childhood years had been relatively serene, enjoying the beauty of the wildlife in a region not too isolated, but enough so they would be left in peace. She was not told much about who her father had been, though from the brief moments her mother spoke of him, she understood that they had loved each other. As for her mother, she was uncomfortable with discussing her past, other than the fact that she had once been a courtesan in one of the large cities of Nippon, which was indeed telling of the calculatedly seductive way she used to walk and talk, even now in a place where such things were not needed.

She had been told that humans often disliked the hengeyokai and warned to approach them with caution, but despite this, Yaena found a kind of odd fascination with humans and their brief lives, often taking on the form of one to spend time among them in the nearby villages. After all, her mother was human, and she had always been so kind to her, so they could not be all like that, could they? Well, Yaena found out that this wasn't always the case, but she had met enough approachable humans not to grow to dislike them. Ironically, some were even taken by her foxy beauty and demeanour, despite the prejudices of their own, an it was through these visits that she discovered her liking of lust, though she paid this no mind other than casual pleasure.

This idyll would not last forever, though - as Yaena's mother eventually succumbed to the brevity of human life, something that brought the kitsune great sorrow, though she was determined to continue her life in the forest. That would not last long, either, as it is in human nature to expand, and the village next to the forest grew into a small town, depriving her of her usually solitary life. Prejudices were harsher where more people were as well, thus Yaena decided to seek the cover of anonymity somewhere in a large city. What she found when she came to the capital was not much better, though the crowds did give her levity and she met other hengeyokai like herself. She was not able to make a better living for herself, however, and there were only two ways a woman like her could survive on the streets - thievery or prostitution. Not knowing anything about the former, Yaena reluctantly took to the latter, using her passion for sexual acts to get her through the day, even if it was not with those of her choosing. She was not about to let this life drag her down, however, having already been trained in skills that prostitues of the slums could not know, it made it easier for her to find a patron of noble rank who fell for her and supported, which became her entryway into more select social circles, impressing with her charm and grace, as well as her skills in music and dance, conversation as well as an uncanny ability to take prejudice without blinking an eye. It was not long since her clientele shifted from muddy to perfumed, turning her from the prostitute she had been into courtesan, a position that gained her some amount of respect despite her low social status, but also the enmity of many high-ranked wives and some husbands, since it was not just men she fancied sleeping with but women as well.

She could have let the sorrow of her life consume her with hatred, but instead Yaena channeled her grief into allurement, using her position to try and better the lives of other hengeyokai, kindness and grace favouring her disposition even though she has drawn from her age and experience to learn about the intrigues of the wealthy and noble, no stranger to deception though her heart is not one of malice she knows how to keep it well hid. Nowadays she could be found escorting nobles or rich merchants to festivities, sitting under a pagoda and drinking tea whilst talking and smiling, and performing for her many clients in various artistic forms, in and out of the bedchamber. She earned herself the nickname "Lady Kay," and when those called for her by that many it was known that it wasn't a noble lady they were seeking.

When Kunio reemerged in Nippon, Yaena was tasked - like most women of her craft - to provide comfort for the King's soldiers during their battle with the Kikai. It was there that the kitsune saw first hand the power that the machine men had, and whilst she understood their plight and disagreed with the King's decision of conducting the Purge instead of simply letting these people leave, she was also against the brutality she had seen on the battlefield, considering them atrocities.

Suffice it to say that she became very concerned for the future of her country and herself, so when the new King and Kunio agreed to form a treaty she was more than glad to hear the news, hoping for a peaceful resolution that would bring back stability to Nippon. However, her instincts couldn't help but flinch between this apparent wellness and something else that she could not define. She is on her way now to Otenjo to offer her services as an entertainer for the people attending the tournament, though her real purpose was to be closer to this important political event.

There are some Shizen Foku whose births are particularly divine. Conceived of the mystical energies of the world itself, blah blah blah, this and that. Makes for a nice story, and certainly has the potential to start one's own little religion up. Kyoko...was not one such baby. Her father - a diety of glorious combat - basically masqueraded in human form down in Nippon, got drunk with a bunch of ladies, and one of them happened to get knocked up. Unceremonious? Fuck yeah, it was. Of course, if your baby having a bunch of scar-like birthmarks on her wasn't convincing enough, the fact that a band of traveling warrior-monks rescued her from an invading warlord - and later specified that they could sense her divine heritage from across the field - should be.

Even as a child, Kyoko had shown an unusual affinity for weapons and how to use them. Her mother was convinced that she could beat a ronin with a spoon if she had to, though that might be a bit of an overstatement. That being said, it's safe to say that if she found a loaded gun lying around out in the field, she could pick it up, figure out how to aim it, and use it to knock a samurai right off his horse, all in a relatively short amount of time. This pick-up-and-go tendency of hers is often her greatest weapon in the field, and it has saved her life on more than one occasion.

However, being born into the family of a bar wench didn't really do any favors for her social life. Initially, her scars got her picked on as a young child, since kids tend to consider "different" and "oddball" to be synonyms. That didn't last long, however, as her natural affinity for battle turned her into a force to be reckoned with, and frankly scared the bullies into submission. She grew up as a sort of vengeful spirit among her peers: she'd mostly fight only to defend another's honor, but once you got her in a fighting mood, your ass was grass.

Once she reached adulthood, however, Kyoko found that you can't just pummel your way out of problems. Adults have deadly weapons, and if you cut one down in the street, the authorities might decide to forego arresting you and just perform an execution on the spot. This led her into a mercenary lifestyle, fighting to earn a living, since fighting is the one skill she can really make money on. As a wise man once said, "if you're good at something, never do it for free."

As for why she's in town, well...let's be real here, this meeting of peace between humans and Kikai probably isn't going to end well. Up until recently, those two factions were waging a campaign that's less "war" and more outright extermination. Tensions are going to be high, and all it takes is one assassin with an agenda to throw everything for a loop. Yes, Kyoko is expecting blood...and when it starts getting spilled, her services will be quite valuable.
