epoxymoron Wrote:Honestly I see you work and work ethic on the level of the legend of queen opala level. The writing/art and game play look to be of a similar quality. The new legend of queen opala origins game has a long update cycle for non backers, but the public releases so far have been polished. I had a feeling you were biting off more than you could chew with you original deadlines especially compared to other games with similar quality.
Having never developed a game myself it would take me a decade to make a game with just text. Seeing as you're well on your way to beating that you're ahead in the game
Summary: take your time, take a little break and spend some time with your kid get back to work on the game later.
yummy tiger on patreon Wrote:So, I saw this picture and thought, "Wow, that is kind of how I feel at times." I work and try to get things ready for release, but feel like I'm not moving forward. Damn fence, holding me back!
Jokes aside, as I continue to finish things up (and work on future chapter game stuff), I want to take a moment to explain a realization I had this month. I've been so focused the past few months on getting chapter 1 out the door, that I've been a bit "messy" with how I'm implementing things in RPG Maker. Meaning, I've failed to properly organize switches/variables, etc. with the mindset that I'd just fix it later. Yet, in evaluating things this month, it dawned on me that even when I release this chapter, you guys are still only getting an incomplete game. Yes, you're getting more Aylia's Story goodness, but that does not change the fact that it is just a small portion of the entire product...
In realizing this, I began to think that my focus on chapter 1 is a bit misplaced. My true focus should always be on 1) Getting the ENTIRE game done (meaning smart development throughout), 2) Eliminating player frustration, and 3) Providing awesomeness to you guys who are waiting. Because, the reality is that if you get chapter 1 in January or March, it does not matter a helluva lot in the grand scheme of things. What is important is that you get the ENTIRE game this year.
So, what does this mean? This means that I should not be developing things half-assed in an effort to release chapter 1 (I've already spent time this week organizing switches and variables correctly). It means that if chapter 1 is delayed in an effort to resolve save game transfers, I should delay it. Because, ultimately, it will save you guys 5+ hours of your time not replaying the stuff you've already seen. I should not hold things back in chapter 1 to make future releases better, because I should just get it all working up front. And, I should continue to post lore posts, teasers, dev journals, so those following along can participate in the process and not wonder if I've given up.
You might be thinking, "Well, I want the damn chapter now!" and I can understand that mindset. But, take a moment and think, are you really going to be fully satisfied with another chunk of the game, or do you really want to play the entire thing? Does it matter if I release chapter 1 tomorrow, chapter 2 in April and the full thing in October, or is it better to I release chapter 1 in February, chapter 2 in April, and the full game in September? Basically, the only date that truly matters is the end date--which I'm hoping will be August/September.
I'm not sure if all that makes sense, but it does to me. And that realization has led to this development being less like a "job" and more like a "hobby"--which it is at this point. I've been less focused on getting chapter 1 out the door the past two weeks and have simply worked on the game. One day I worked on illustrating the World Map (irrelevant for chapter 1), one day I spent designing Lynne (also irrelevant for chapter 1), but it was damn fun and moved the game itself forward. This is what I mean when I say focusing on the game itself more than just getting the next chunk out the door. That is why I chose to setup Patreon in this fashion.
Long-winded post summed up. Chapter 1 is not ready, it will be ready relatively soon. BUT, the game itself is progressing nicely and we move forward towards the END date. Also, I'm going to get this save game situation figured out once and for all, which is something I'm going to need to dedicate time to eventually. The game is simply too big to require people to replay things over and over again.
Thanks for your patience and support! You guys are awesome.

No news is good news, right?
The last update I posted was to let people know that the first portion of Chapter 1 is finalized. My most recent, and hopefully last, face revamp is finished. The purpose was to bring all of Aylia's eyes into the same size/style. There were a few that really kind of seemed out-of-place. All the artwork, dialogue and eventing is done for the second portion of Chapter 1--aside from one single quest event, which I just need to setup. It is a little more complicated that any other.
What's left is the final portion of chapter 1 (basically, the final third). I've got the main stuff in place, nearly all the artwork started (meaning at least sketched) and have everything at least planned on paper. I'll need to input the events/dialogue into RPG Maker, which is kind of a slow process at times and finish up the CGs. These last two weeks have been nice and productive. What I was talking about in that last public post has worked well, and I've got my RPG Maker stuff in much better order now. Really, really improved my switches/variables and common events so they are organized by chapter and purpose. This was a huge thing I had been putting off and is quite important as I move forward into future chapters. While it ate up about a week of my time, it'll save time in the long run.
So, in sum, it's coming along. I don't know when chapter 1 will be done, but this game will be finished this year. I sticking the that goal.
