Subnautica (OOC Thread)

Expected "start" date: May 15th (assuming all goes according to plan, MUAHAHAHA!)

Character Slots (4/4 "filled")
1) Knightvilla
2) Nobudi
3) Kankra
4) Reaver

Reserve List
1) Spitfyre


General idea is that it'll follow the game flow in that there's not really that much to tell about your character unless you want there to be. I'll probably use dice for actions like running away, fighting enemies, or searching for resources, but the goal will for this RP to mostly be story driven with as few mechanical factors as we can physically muster.

Mechanics

There will be four stats as per the game:

  • Health (as a percentage)
  • Hunger
  • Thirst
  • Oxygen

There will be no "lust" stat. If your character chooses to submit in a situation that would utilize lust, then that's their choice, if they don't want to, then that's also their choice.

Hunger and Thirst will decline at a rate understandable for the actions you take. Oxygen won't be monitored too strictly unless you're going down into deeper depths/underwater caves. I'll probably stick with the main enemies, though I might introduce one or two new ones.

Enemies might be lustful or they might be aggressive, depends on the situation and dumb luck. I might honestly decide with the flip of a coin. Honestly most fish reproduce in ways that wouldn't be viable for humans, but since this is an alien world we might exaggerate a bit.

Starting Tools: (pick two, excluding Transfuser/Propulsion Cannon) (you may also choose the Radiation suit, an air tank, or flippers as a tool)
Starting Material: (15x Titanium, 10x Copper, or 20x Quartz)

It's assumed that all players will be located around the Aurora. If a player ever dies/a slot opens up, the new character will be introduced to the game via a "personal craft" crash landing nearby. Players won't actually (at least not initially) be able to interact with each other past maybe radio messages. They'll be about 500-1,000 meters away from each other.


Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? For simplicity's sake, when the Aurora's core melts down, should radiation be introduced or should we just assume everyone starts with a radiation suit?

Cool since this is a survival rp and honestly will probably need teamwork our roles can easily be divided by our starting tools. While a weapon is super handy as it would seem a base would prove more useful in the long run so as a group we may want to think what items we pick quite carefully.
Life has gotten so much more boring. Well I suppose it doesn't help if I say my only source of entertainment is YouTube and here. So yeah not much of interesting life going on.

I don't think char interaction will be possible for me due to a busy time schedule and differing timezones. Don't want to leave you hanging with possibly just one post every few days or so in stressful times.
I'd still be interested in participating though.

Is it possible to make an underwater-archaeologist-style char? Like something along the lines of Lara Croft or such? I found the underwater levels in TR: Underworld to be quite entertaining.

I would say yes! You just need to observe the gear that would fit into the Archtype of the archaeologist character. For exploring I would recommend the light and for an archaelologist they would need a base of operations to return to with their findings.

So for you my dear Kankra I recommend starting with the Flashlight and Builder gear. Although with creature encounters you will have to run.

Also for character interactions you could easily develop a messaging system. Like your person isnt a people person so she avoids them most the time however you leave audio messages for everyone on your findings and whenever you need anything. Otherwise your character has a no talking and no interacting policy.

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines in term of gear. First acquirement would be a knife then.

And the no talking, no interacting policy along with the exclusion of light for most of the time is... very much the real deal in archaeology and the study of it.

Admittedly players starting out 500-1000 meters away from each other would make interaction (at least in the short term) extremely unlikely outside of "transmission messages."

The general "plot" of Subnautica is that the Aurora was a ship meant to begin initial terraforming phases before the colony ships showed up, but something went wrong and a "mysterious" pulse knocked it out of orbit/damaged it immensely when it impacted the water (and not much later, it caused it to explode, releasing radiation into the surroundings).

I'll probably go with stasis rifle and something else. for starting equipment. I'm either thinking a security officer that escaped the ship or a researcher obsessed with control.

Background: As the Colonization Threat Officer on the Aurora, Kyra's job to determine any natural terrain or creatures that could pose any threats the colonists. She is supposed to find and catalog them all, to make sure the first wave of colonists bring the right level of armaments to survive and fight off any predators they could encounter. For most of it, Kyra loves her job as it allows to visit many worlds and enjoy them before they are spoiled by human civilization but it does carry some risk since she is more of a scout that has to tip-toe around every lethal thing on the planet just to make sure the colonists don't meet the same fate as she could.
