Playing games or Making games and other questions

I'm just wondering how many people in here rather play games than make games and vice versa? I still play video games, but I feel like I lost my urges to spend some time to play or I rather do something else than play video games all the time. I'm starting to get into game development and I prefer to make games now than play them. :D

Also what is you all's opinion of h-games or adult-rated games overall? In my opinion, games such as these are generally horrible. There are pretty decent h-games, but unfortunately there's only a few of them. :(

One more question, who in this forum has some form of skill? Not to sound pompous, but usually I run into "idea guys/girls" most of time. I give those types of people some good advice and some help, yet they ignore my advice or pass off my help (sometimes they misunderstand me and think that I'm "bashing" them). :?

I don't have time to play or make games, except for playing h-games. I prefer to play those, of course, but there aren't enough good ones around to play (at least, not enough good ones that are free and in english and don't require Windows and half a gig of space - I'm too lazy and cheap to upgrade my HD). So it seems to me that the only way to have a chance to play the type of game I really want to play... is to make it myself.

Most h-games you find out there are terrible (such as those meet'n'fucks, or the ones that aren't games at all, but just an interactive sex scene). They're developed by lazy people trying to make something that will generate site traffic and therefore ad revenue. Or else they're developed as prototypes by people who care, and then stolen by lazy people trying to generate site traffic. From the quality of most games, it appears that the writers have zero respect for the end user's intelligence, or else no idea what people like me want. This seems to also be the case in the porn industry, so it's not all that surprising. Likely the same people are involved. Games on this forum are different, though, they're made by end users - people who actually care about quality and seem to want to make a game for the sake of producing something that's good.

I have no skill at making games. I'm pretty good with developing software, but just don't have the time to learn how to program in Flash, or the patience to see a project through to the end. I have no skill or patience to do art, either. If I could live for a few months without working, I would gladly start up a project. Or really I would probably just go on vacation and never come back, or take up golf or something. All that will have to wait until I'm 65, I guess. Or with the rate medical technology is advancing, maybe 85? That's assuming the pension system will still exist that far into the future, and not become completely broken in the next decade by declining birth rates.

Maybe if I had a team of Indians to do the grunt work for 50 cents an hour, I could get something going. But I'd probably spend so much time trying to communicate what I want that I'd be better off doing it myself.

Wow, very thorough input. Well making a game is a lot of work and game development is not for everyone; the thought of making a game sounds "fun" in a way, but when one starts getting to it, I hear that in 3 months or less the game idea is abandoned. If only the "idea" people will get that straight in their head. I definitely agree with you on how most h-games are lacking in terms of quality and they are just products that somehow generate site traffic. Well, it's a good thing that the people on this site actually cares about producing good h-games that actually has gameplay.

I used to play alot of games/flash games before, but there just to few good ones these days. I am more for creating games and then play it instead of find a game to play, even if the game i made isnt good. The problem is just that it takes so much time to create a good one and you get bored so i havent done it yet but i hope we will finish LoK so i have at least been a part of one.

What i think about h-games is that they are really bad, you cant even call most of them games since all you got is a slideshow and the ones you can call games dont even let you fap. i also dont like them since they are pretty much the same all of them, same goes for porn in general. Have you seen then you have seen all of them but i dont think its quite the same for yiff, since there is interesting character designs they can look so different from each other but this is just my opinion. For LoK we really want a game that got everything a game should have so i hope it will turn out to be the first real good one.

I think i have a few skills, no real good ones but good enough to create something decent. I would say animating and drawing/tracing is the thing im best at, the rest is creating music and actionscript but i am not good at it. Of course i got more but nothing that is relevant.

@banana i really agree with you, why cant just the people who is good create good games. There is a reason why the people that isnt good try to create good games and thats because they want something else than a slideshow or a game that doesnt even let you fap.
Don't create a porn game if you're only interested in porn.

So I'm making my game because i want to learn java. I agree that a lot of h-games are basically pictures. Some of them are flappable but i try to keep away from most because they annoy me.

As for making or playing in general it depends on the game.

Thanks for your input. Yeah, the general h-"game" is the lame sequential type of play (click buttons to get the hentai pic). To be fair, there are some who made attempts to make something beyond an interactive h-scene, but the story is bad and the gameplay is stale (ex. Brave Soul...look it up). For now I'm standing my ground, but hey probably there are good hentai games out there...too bad it's in Japanese (even better, we have to go through all the trouble downloading an English-translated patch and hope it will work). :|

Also something to add on to skill. There are those who may not have the skills required, but takes the time to learn a skill and eventually they get better. What's funny to me sometimes is some people who have "good ideas" won't give others a chance to work with them, and the "idea" people probably have no skill whatsoever.

I prefer to play games. I mean making them is fun and all, yea. But it gets boring pretty fast, especially on flash so I can only stand to put a few hours in when I do. Honestly most porn games are god awful, reason being imo is that they cater way too much on their own fetishes, are just plain terrible at making games, or in the case of sites like those m&f games quality gets downgraded for the sake of quantity. As for the skills thing I'm decent with flash overall I guess, mainly due to katsu's help. Be nice to get a new computer soon so I can play around with flash again and give my friend back his crappy laptop.

I prefer making them, however (like all developers) motivation is lost over time, which is why I plan out what i want to do to the game whenever I work on it. I can't stand a game that sacrifices gameplay for lots of H-content, but on that note, it's all about finding a balance.

Like you put Nookie I hate those games where it's "click to see hentai" or "move your mouse up and down" but it's all about taste. I'm sure some people enjoy that kind of thing, just like people enjoy fetishes. Speaking of fetishes it's always hard to cater for everyone, which is why people tend to stick on the whole "just have sex" games. And also on that note, I find it difficult to decide where H-Content comes into play. E.g. for games like SimGirl (while it is made to be that way) the H-Content takes forever, and I personally don't find the gameplay even enjoyable, since it's just click here, click there, sleep, repeat 100 times. With mine I'm trying to make the content easily accessible, but not a "have sex with everyone you can" game.

But as always, there's going to be people who really enjoy your game, and there's going to be people who hate on it. The best thing you can do is just plan it out to enjoy it yourself, and if other people enjoy it too, that's a huge bonus!

I strongly agree that one must plan out what kind of game one wants to work on. Time and time again, I hear the whole "ideas are in my head" bit and I don't know why some don't bother to put their ideas on paper. How I see it is if the idea is there, it's probably there for a few seconds before one forgets about it. I'm making a habit to note my ideas down and eventually compile them into a game design document. Also yes, it's all about balance.

Agreed. Whatever game you're making, you have to know who you are appealing to. I guess in my opinion, the one's who play those "click to see hentai" games have bad taste, but as I think about it, the more it motivates me to go beyond those crappy h-games.

Yep. It's very satisfying to know that people liked your game. :)

Some of the games here on these forums are pretty excellent, such as the samus platformer, corta splatformer, mario is missing, and dirtyc101's furry fury game. And then elsewhere you have Demon Girl, Angel Girl, Shinobi Girl, and SuperDeepThroat, requiring no extra downloads, and simple enough that it doesn't matter what language they're in. And then Fairy War 1 and 2, which only require Windows (I run them in a Windows emulator). And the text games like Corruption of Champions, and Xadera's Nimin aren't bad. Outside of those, I haven't seen much of value.

Did anyone played the Frank's Adventure games? I think that's one of the best examples since it gets the player involved. Also the comedy in the game is well executed. There's no sex, but you get h-pics for every task that is met.
