Jim is the current heir to the Alkaid family, a clan-like lineage of specialized monster hunters known as Slayers. Most hunters are more accustomed to unintelligent, instinct-driven beasts, such as wild boars or mountain lions. Slayers, on the other hand, are trained for taking down "smarter" monsters. Vampires, werewolves, necromancers...hell, the better ones can even slay a dragon, with the right opportunities and/or equipment. The Alkaids, in particular, earn their keep via contracts, often by town authorities to slay a local threat, though they've done higher-scale jobs as well. One of their greatest achievements was done by Jim's father, Jered, who struck down a vampire lord in his own castle throne room. Contrary to popular theories of him doing so with a whip while dressed in leather, though, he did so with nothing more than a sword, standard clothing covering some light armor, and his own natural gift for electric magic. As one might expect, the aforementioned natural gift is inherited each generation, so Jim has that as well.
As for Jim himself, he has yet to pull off anything so grand. He's taking more of a "start small and work your way up" approach, and it's worked out well for him so far. He's also got a bit more of an attitude than his father; Jim describes it as being more "free-minded" than his father was, but if the old man was around to hear him say that, it'd probably result in a familial facepalm. Not that Jim lets that fact get to him; if he's gonna do slaying for a living, he might as well enjoy whatever comes with that line of work. Food, drink, the occasional cute chick at the tavern...he enjoys it all, though responsibly enough to keep his wallet in good shape.
While Jered's fighting style was always a bastard sword in one hand and a gauntlet to beef up the other, Jim's okay with having a small shield around for defensive purposes. An open hand has more capacity for offense, sure, but unless you're quick-witted enough to literally catch arrows out of the air, a shield is typically better for protection from ranged attacks. Besides, when combined with his own inherent electrical magic, Jim can do far more on both offense and defense than appearances alone would suggest.
