It seems people already posted all the good Animes I was going to suggest, so I'm going to suggest a Anime that's still ongoing that you should watch.

The anime is called 'Attack On Titan' it's getting good and the animations are very well done.

I guess I prefer generally darker animes that are serious most of the time, meanwhile Trigun spent a bit too much time on silly asides; it takes quite a while for the actual story to take shape. It's worth watching if you aren't put off by the first few episodes, just isn't one of the my overall favourites, of course as with everything else people's mileage will vary :)

Kudos to Thaedael for mentioning Last Exile; I just watched the series recently after seeing the recommendation and really enjoyed it. Although the main characters are two (really three) kids/teens they're not really the major players in the story, so it gives you a picture of events form their side of the story, which makes it all work really well. Fair warning to anyone that watches it though; hardly anything is ever explained in extra detail, including some major plot points, which is something that annoys me slightly. Still it's jumped up onto my list of favourites :)

speed racer
Initial D (3 season and 1 movie)

I remember there was a anime i liked called something like 30 faced thief. It was about this girl whos being poisoned by her in laws and basically this thief that steals a family gem, asks her if she'll come with him. And it's a story about her life living with and chasing this man.

I'm more of a film junkie but I keep a list of everything I've seen. These are ones I particularly like but a few might seem dull at first.

-Angel beats
-Outlaw Star
-Slam Dunk
-Fist of the North Star
-Ghost in the Shell
-Dennou coil
-Shiguruii
-Cowboy Bebop
-Casshern Sins
-Eureka 7
-A Place Promised in our Early Day
-Mushishi
-Kids on the Slope
-The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (I haven't watched yet, but I think it will be good)

I'm a sucker for old anime that was hand drawn over computer animated for it's art. Everything by Hayao Miazaki is just fantastic, I particularly love his work with Isao Takahata on "Grave of the Fireflies". I like to follow the music director Yoko Kanno, because I think her choice of music is fantastic, especially when paired with Shinchiro Watanabe. Here is his stuff ripped from wiki but it definitely isn't everything, also try to avoid some of the American redone stuff, I think it was Disney that completely wrecked "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" by significantly changing the movie by getting rid of scenes and editing dialogue to change the story, theme, and generally everything good about the film.

-The Castle of Cagliostro
- Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
-Castle in the Sky
-My Neighbor Totoro
-Kiki's Delivery Service
-Only Yesterday
-Porco Rosso
-Pom Poko
-Whisper of the Heart
-On Your Mark (music video)
- Princess Mononoke
-Spirited Away
-Whale Hunt (animated short)
-Koro's Big Day Out (animated short)
-Mei and the Kittenbus (animated short)
-Imaginary Flying Machines (animated short)
-The Cat Returns
-Howl's Moving Castle
-Monmon the Water Spider (animated short)
-House-hunting (animated short)
-The Day I Harvested A Planet (animated short)
-Ponyo
-Mr. Dough and the Egg Princess (animated short)
-The Secret World of Arrietty
-From Up on Poppy Hill
-The Wind Rises

That sound like a reference to Edogawa Rampo or more likely the Glico Morinaga case, which is one of the most interesting things I've ever read about.

Thief of 90 faces? I remember it was based on a set of japanese books. Also, the entire story line ends with this bad guy putting water in to it's fifth state... don't ask!

Roots Search.

Also the game, which we all just lost.
What is a goal but an attempt to gain a purpose? We don't really want the goals and advancements for themselves, we want them because it gives us a reason to act.

Well I've been watching some shoujo lately. Got sick of the crappy romance in shounen just being all harem and ecchi.
I like Baka test and Highschool Dxd, but they get tedious after a while with little to no romance progression. Kore Zombie was much better, but still lacking.
So here are some.
*Lovely Complex is freaking funny, with a nice romance element. Basically a tall girl(played by Nami from One Piece's seiyuu) and a short dude are always fighting and she eventually falls in love, but he is thick as pig shit. In Kansai accents, so even funnier. The animation is great and the faces they pull are the best anime has ever made.

*Kimi ni Todoke. Chick who looks like Sadoko from the ring is naive and just wants to be useful. Cute funny stories and a dude who loves her, but she is as thick as pig shit. Funny, while the romance is a lot slower paced. Basically it turns the usual shoujo tropes around to make fun of them.

*Tenshi na Konamaiki isn't shoujo(I think), but more like a delinquent story with a lead girl. Guy wishes to be the manliest of men, instead his wish is reversed and he is turned into beautiful girl. Add a stupid delinquent who is hopelessly in love, the glasses wearing spy/pervent, the normal dude and the female friend who appears normal to the mix of a beautiful girl who acts like a guy and you have a winner. The mangaka has done lots of awesome manga, so check out his other stuff as well.

*Angel Densetsu. About a guy with a face like a devil, but with a heart of gold. Freaking funny manga, shame there are only 2 OVA's. The same mangaka who did Claymore I think.

*Seitokai Yakuindomo is about a school council made up of two very dirty minded girls, one loli who is 16 and a normal dude. Freaking funny as the two dirty girls turn everything said or done into perverted sayings. One of the funniest anime I have watched.

*Katanagatari. Chick and a guy travel around Japan to try and capture 12 legendary swords for the sake of the shogun who thinks they will help unite the country. Pretty entertaining as the lead guy can barely tell the difference between humans, male or female and is naive to the world. Funny action which is truly engaging.

There are more, but that is what I am watching at the moment.

Nice to see you liked the manga awesomeness of Angel Densetsu.
I am also reading Ocha Ni Gosu. About a bad dude trying to become good by joining the tea ceremony club. Everyone is terrified of him and he often misunderstands why people hate him. He often hurts people, but sees himself as the victim. Very funny.

I am pretty sure the same mangaka also writes Kyou Kara Ore Wa. Which is about a dude who starts off as a normal kid, but wants to be a delinquet. So Mitsuhashi dyes his hair, perms it(not the curly perm we think of in the west, but the Japanese varity) while meeting Ito, who straightens his hair into a foot high spikes. This what they look like, but the art style isn't the same as the general manga. This is their chibi/over simplified expressions.
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Image

This mangaka I think also made Cheeky Angel(Tenshi na Konamaiki) which is great and he might have made another cool manga Doushirou de Gozaru(only 12 chapters translated) Which is about a kid being brought up in Nevada on Samurai stories. He comes back to japanese and is basically a samurai from the edo period. Great fun

I'm watchin Igano Kabamaru which is 80's? anime about a ninja with a big appetite (kabamaru means hippo man I think.) His real name is Kagemaru which means shadow man I think. But it is a funny stupid, kinda sketchy in the animation and drawing compartments. But great, I think of it as a young Jackie Chan going to school in Tokyo while acting like he was the monkey king.

Log Horizon is pretty good. Looks like it has the best parts of Sword Art Online, but doesn't throw them away after 10 or so episodes to go back to 'reality'. Damn fairies and crap, I couldn't make sense of that game. All the danger was gone, so all the drive. Log Horizon has already demonstrated the psychological effects of living in a world without death and meaning. I hope they expand on that.
I know comparing the two is a little stupid when Log Horizon has just started, but hey. So far Log Horizon is shaping up to be a cracker.

I'd like to throw in a suggestion. I saw this anime, really bizarre one, called Kaiba (Please, for my sanity and yours, no Yu-Gi-Oh jokes please)
Its artstyle wouldn't be too out of place of a children's cartoon, but sometimes, the Dialogue wouldn't be too out of place of a softcore hentai...
Overall, pretty interesting story (sci-fi, btw), but the music can be a bit of an earworm at times.

I think I'm going to rewatch Fairy Tail over the next few months so that I can have a fresher knowledge of it come the time it returns from hiatus. I hope they announce a return date soon; it's been 8 months now.

Just be glad they didn't go the way of Naruto and have masses of filler right at the most important moment of the manga(so far) and totally wreck the atmosphere of the impending doom.

I can't wait for more Fairy Tail either. I often forget Lucy is the main character.
But I am freaking stoked that Seitokai Yakuindomo gets a second season. One of my favourite animes.

Hajime no Ippo is pretty good while Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi is pretty damn awesome.
