On my way home, I was thinking about Porygon and had a neat idea about her hacking a security robot to save you at some point. Which got me wondering about her motives as a character.
And just like when I was
thinking about Team Rocket, the most important question turned out to be:
What unique problems would a Porygon have?Answering this caused an avalanche of ideas.
These are the notes I typed out as I was thinking:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):
her motives are unknown.
she winds up helping you.
surprisingly, her motives are not sexual.
what would a unique digital being seek?
what problems would it have?
how would it see others, itself, its creator?
it's lonely and seeks similar beings to relate to.
- it might visit advanced machines, hoping they are intelligent.
- it might try to create more porygon.
- it might seek to figure out who created it, under the assumption that it's a program, and that all programs are created by humans.
- it might seek to learn how programs are made, then suspect that it's not a program after all. it is alive.
- it might seek a body to co-exist with other living beings. yet always feel out-of-place.
- what about meeting voltorbs & magnamites? still different?
- can its body be a voltorb or a magnamite.
- does it create the voltorbs & magnamites, while attempting to create others like itself? by embedding an AI into a pokeball.
would it always create them in pairs so they never have to be alone like her?
would she contemplate and question benig a creator of life?
what about biological beings that create life? Does she draw inspiration and try to treat these AI's as her children?
- is a being defined by its body? Intelligence grows to become the identity of the body it inhabits.
She can easily predict what her AI's will do. Is she herself predictable to the one who created her?
Biological life isn't predictable to her. It is because it's so different?
Could a biological being possibly have created something as different as her?
But she's not a program, and her AI's are. When they co-exist with her inside a computer, the programs simply flow through the circuits while she has her own body.
She realizes that she's not a program. She's something else. Something different. What am I?
- does it leave drawings and messages, hoping there's another porygon out there to discover & respond to them?
- where does she leave them? where she first awoke.
- check them frquently?
- what if another porygon does find them? what response would it leave? tantalizing clues to their origin, leading to a specific place.
- would another porygon also be female? would it matter?
bisexual because of lonliness & enticed by the CONCEPT of being aroused by a sexual being of any kind.
- what if a greedy person pretended to be another porygon? to capture her? bribe her with 'answers' and fake info, in exchange for favors.
- does she become bitter towards people afterwords?
mortality. would it die if it's inside of a computer that gets turned off?
- look for a reliable home. a computer that never gets switched off. maybe an important computer, like a power plant.
- what form does it take when it's within un-powered circuits?
a digital pokemon that can create AI's might get exploited by some people, as a fast programmer, or a super-hacker.
what hobbies does a digital being have?
what games does it enjoy?
if it discovers its own sexuality, how does it get off?
- with who? maybe any sexual being will appeal to it.
- does it seek porn collections, featuring pairs interacting, to enjoy vicariously?
- does it attempt peculiar fantasy drawings featuring itself?
In the process, a fascinating story has emerged.
To summarize:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):
Porygon is a unique digital being, of unknown origin.
Porygon awakes, not knowing where she came from.
She's lonely, but cannot relate to non-digital life. They live in worlds so different that they have nothing in common to talk about or share.
Thinking that she's a program, she searches for her programmer, but nobody knows her, where she came from, or even what she is.
She seeks powerful machines, but finds no intelligence to befriend.
Fearing she'll die in a computer when it turns off, she looks for a safe home. An important computer that will never get switched off. The power plant.
Feeling lonely, she tries creating intelligent programs, but discovers that she's nothing like a program.
Her AI's infect pokeballs, turning them into voltorbs.
Realizing she's something else, she leaves messages everywhere, hoping another porygon will find them.
She discovers her own sexuality, but is utterly alone. She seeks porn of couples to enjoy vicariously.
She checks her messages regularly for replies.
A Team Rocket agent discovers the pokemon and her messages in the power plant and reports to Giovanni.
Someone answers her, claiming to be another porygon. They offer "information" in exchange for favors like hacking.
Team Rocket is manipulating her. She refuses to believe it's a trick. She desparately wants to not be alone.
She repeatedly asks to meet her pen-pal. Eventually they agree, but's a trap.
She's lured to a computer. You interrupt them. The computer accidentally gets switched off. Fearing she may be gone, you take the device to Prof Oak.
He recovers her. But she's bitter and won't trust anybody.
Another message appears, but she thinks it's a trick, and replies with insults.
Then another porygon actually appears and reads the hateful message. She sees it just as it leaves, and chases after it.
She leaves desparate messages everywhere apologizing, begging the other porygon to come back. But it doesn't.
In truth, it was captured.
When you discover the trapped porygon in a Rocket base, the heart-broken porygon hacks one of the security robots and rescues her.
The rescued porygon explains that they are digital pokemon. They weren't created by anybody. They emerge from the network naturally.
It takes her to a remote place on the net to show it happening first-hand. You can tag along to see it too.
She apologizes. She's been lonely and afraid. The other porygon is amazed by her programming skill and the voltorbs she created.
Programming is easy for a porygon. She teaches her partner how to do it. They construct another AI together. It results in magnamites.
Her partner suggests that creating life might be like having children.
Later, her partner hits on her. They fall in love. It doesn't matter that they're both female. They're excited just by the CONCEPT of someone sharing sex with them. Bisexual. Her partner likes to browse porn archives too. Finding porn online is inevitable.
