Used Gaming Computers

Postby Suraru » Thu Jul 11, 2013 5:45 am

This is really starting to piss me off, so it's time to ask a community of horny nerd furries!

I need a new computer. For the last decade, I've been stuck with a frakintop. This Acer Aspire 4530 has had everything except for the motherboard and case replaced at least twice. Speakers, RAM, CPU, GPU, screen, mouse, keyboard, you name it. All jury rigged too, this thing has long lived past it's life expectancy, and I've reached about as far as I can go with upgrading the software, because the hardware is stuck to only accept factory defaults, so the few parts that I couldn't scavenge off of friend's broken laptop, I had to order somehow. I've put less than $100 into this computer over the 9 years I've had it.

I've had enough, and while playing a heavily modded Fallout 3/New Vegas, I decided it's time I get a new computer, especially now that shit is stable and I have $200 saved up thanks to my low end job. I found a few greats ones on ebay, but after following them for a few days, they jacked up above what I can afford. So I'm pissed, and google isn't helpful at all in helping me find what I want. If you guys know any good websites, please tell me. Or better yet, if you can find a computer that exceeds these expectations, I will love you forever.

Price: Under $210 would be nice
Operating system: For gods sake, windows 7 would make things a lot easier.
CPU: Anything above 2.5 GHz x2
GPU: Anything better than nVidia GeForce 9100M G would be acceptable, but it would be optimal to be able to play games at medium/high settings, fallout to name one. I use this website for reference http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.ph ... orce-9100m
RAM: I don't give a shit, RAM is cheap and I can get 8GB for like, $20, so RAM can be whatever
Internet: No really, I would love to be able to go onto the internet with it, this gets oversighted sometimes

I think that's really it, I have my own keyboard, mouse, monitor, stuff like that. If you can help me find this, I will send you pictures of my tits as a thank you.

I don't know where you live but RAM is like 100$ for 8 gigs in my state, I built my desktop and fallout 3 was one of the first games I got, it ran that with the built in radeon graphics card so I'm sure that wont be a problem.

Useless filler junk that might help:i7 processors are the fastest and they might get you up there, but are really unreliable. So processor wise go with an i5. Newegg is probably a good place to look unless you browse craigslist and feel like sorting through people wanting to get near retail for oldish used laptops which are a bad deal. There are the sites that sell stuff going to liquidation, but when you buy, get like 20 of everything because chances are they wont work. If you need something to grow a dick and jizz over http://www.falcon-nw.com/ best prebuilts ever, unfortunately its all pretty high priced.

If you can afford to go a little higher, get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230987 its 549$ and I love Asus, hp has a laptop with the exact same specs and is 100$ more, my friend bought the hp, my little brother got the Asus, the biggest difference, the Asus' backlit keyboard is white and the hp's keyboard light blue.

Otherwise sorting through the mess of your local craigslist and backpages will suck but it is probably your best bet to keep it below 210$. Or ask some people at your local hackerspace, as a person who is AI, robotics, and junk, they are really cool.

If you're confident opening it up and getting your hands dirty, my experience has been that you can get the parts cheaper than buying a complete machine. It's more work than buying pre-built, both in looking for deals and actually assembling it, but if you're on a limited budget it might be worth it.

$46 for RAM, free shipping http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/ ... PID=141520

As for building a computer, new parts would cost me around $700, so it's cheaper, and easier to find a pre-owned custom built machine. I actually haven't done that math in a while, but I'll do it in a bit and find what I come up with.

I heard numbers of 200$ will get you parts for a computer that works but likely in 6month you'll start having to move setting down.
Kinda shocked i don't have to with a 9800m GTS card i have. Okay i do now but for the longest time i could play stuff on high.

Are you looking for a desktop or a laptop and what brand do you prefer if any?

I have a laptop, figured out you can't upgrade it. So fuck them, desktop.
As for brand, I don't care about brands, as long as they work and have decent specs, what do brands matter?

Anyways, I already blew the $200 I had saved up on a bunch of commissions for a few characters of mine. So I guess the only purpose of this thread now is to find a goal to shoot for, other than $700.

Go desktop. Go custom. Might want to start with a motherboard. Make sure its ddr3. if you buy used parts be sure they are compatible with the mobo. I wouldnt recommend gigabyte mobos. Newegg has great deals.

Any suggestion on buying mother boards? When i've looked at buying parts, that's always held me up.

When putting your computer together you also have to worry about power supply, too large and your computer will surge and fry, too small and it will be underpowered and break everything. Your motherboard is really up to you, just dont buy something like a barebones dual processor competition board, its just ridiculous for casual use, no one needs that. People get carried away with custom computers, the guy at microcenter talked about how he was at 46,000 for gpu benchmark and was trying to get above 50,000 when I visited last year.

Jesus. Dual SLI on his motherboard, or is he running something like the Nvidia GTX 780?

Personally I'm unwilling to shell out that kind of cash to get a really good gaming computer, at least until I have a stable income.

I think you have to have the same card to SLI, or at least both cards have to be Nvidia. There's no way to dual SLI an Nvidia chip with an AMD chip, for example.

Sexout is for New Vegas, I use Sexus. You know, that one where you basically run around getting raped by everything. Sometimes the raiders do the deathclaw animation by accident and become disfigured, and it's hilarious!
No, but the modlist I currently use is something like this,

If I had to guess, and I do because it was over a year ago, it was probably SLI.

And when it comes to maintenance, I make best buy clean the jizz off my motherboard, I'm always afraid I'll do it wrong.

Take a can of air, likely cost you $15 tops at my best guess (Blue has no clue!) and just spray inside your computer all over. That will clean most dust off your cards which is the number one problem i have where there is something physically wrong with my hardware/computers. Make sure you get the fans.

Hey, nice toothbrush!

Tech info:
Its not so wrong to wash the electronic devices, the problem is that:
1. you need a neutral water (in PH and in regard to polarized charges) and a neutral soap to be perfect. If not, damage can occur over time.
2. if you depend on the sun to dry it out, the radiation will do more harm than good. So you will end up needing an artificial drier (like hairdryers).
3. you dont know if all water particles were vanished. If not, the board can be rusty over time or worse, short circuits can occur.
4. you need to detach the parts (motherboard, video card, the computer case itself) then reassemble them.

I use WD-40 (the original) after using can of airs or compressors (those heavy 'butane-like' things) without disassembling the cards.
Then you can spray WD-40 over the cards, and you can turn the PC on seconds later!
Some people say its bad for the resin/vinyl/protective particles that permeates the circuits, but well, I've seen technicians do that to motherboards over and over again in a time span of 15 years without a problem. Old pcs still running today. People who would like a 'restarted' PC (as new) should use WD-40 once per 6 months. I use once a year.

And yes, I have Pentium 2 and Pentium 3 still running optimized Windows XP versions. But games are better played in DOS environments. Many Pentium 3 or AMD PCs (like 700mhz) are faster than a Nintendo Gamecube. I just dont use more and more old PCs in parallel because they can use as much energy than a Core i7 (provided you dont use complex 3d cards or many attached devices at the same time). You can get a Core i7 running in a 300watt power supply.
