Any guitarists up in here?

Postby Campfire » Sat Jun 01, 2013 3:37 pm

Hey y'all, new guy here. Just wanted to see if anyone played guitar in their spare time, or even as a job! I've been playing for about two years now, but I'm self taught so I don't really know that much :? Any tips you guys have, or exercises for hand strength/coordination? Thanking you in advance :)

I used to take guitar lessons. 10 years. My advice is: practice a lot. Play again and again every day what you can't play properly (yet). And when you train, don't try to go fast, it's useless.
Excuse my English, I'm French.

Also, build up callouses, if anyone wants to play bass, those heavy gauge wires tear your fingers hard.

Yeah, holy crap, I was just jamming a little with my friend at school and I picked up a bass and played a little riff while he soloed over the top. From just like 10 minutes of playing I have a blister on my thumb :/

If you get the rolled threads, its not so bad, but standard gauge bass strings kill me. It took me 3-4 months of playing every day before I could play a bass for more than one hour. Playing the bass is some of the best hand exercises if you have small hands. When I was a kid and rockband came out, I was like you know what? Fuck it. I spend too much time playing finger DDR I will pick up a real guitar. When I went the guys said my hands were too big for a normal guitar to try bass instead. Been playing ever since. If you have small hands unlike me, stretching to hold multiple strings down to the fret is exercise in itself, especially because takes more finger strength to hold it down.

Oh yeah man, I honestly have nothing against bass players unlike a lot of guitarists I know, because once you actually try to play one you realise how deceptively hard it is

Anyone heard of RockSmith? My friend uses it to learn bass, and he says it's a great tool because of how fun it is to learn. Any people just starting to learn guitar or bass might want to check it out.

Rocksmith is interesting to say the least. My brother picked it up and I tried it a bit,^^;; downside is that I haven't played bass enough lately and I need to rebuild the thicker finger skin before I try again (otherwise shred fingers).

I'm going on about four years now. Acoustic guitar. I still suck at it, I can play a few chords and a few riffs, that's about it. Most of the time I just fuck around on it, not really inclined to actually learn how to play it.

I played for like 5 years my music teacher hated that I was lazy and kept asking to learn music theory, 5 years and I realized I never really wanted to play guitar, I wanted to sing. I sang arts songs (like opera and foreign languages) for two years after, picked it up easily (k-12 choir FTW) that and then couldn't go because of life and shit.
