So many, in fact, that we've ended up doubling the number of pokemon in the game.

It makes me feel like I'm being lazy in comparison, but I've been trying to work on the game more lately and experiment with new things to refresh my interest in it.
Old projects tend to suffer from staleness. My enthusiasm for a project usually only lasts maybe 2 months, and this one's been in progress for years. (I think I started it shortly before Pokemon Platinum came out)
Fortunately, I constructed a lot of detailed plans for the game early on. These are simultaneously the solution, and the problem. Projects are only fun to create while you're coming up with new ideas. Ideas become stale the moment you write them down, and try to refer to them later instead of inventing them. If you don't have any plans, or don't remember them, then you're free to start inventing again without restrictions. But plans also provide a path to follow when you don't feel like doing anything in particular, and they concentrate a lot of really great ideas into one place. Still, I can always add new stuff like the Viridian city school, and the 3D map. And there's no reason I can't re-invent things such as fleshing out Misty's motivations and personality.

One thing I've learned from all this is that the state of mind that you're in while coming up with ideas is more valuable than the ideas themselves. As you come up with ideas, the effect snowballs and accelerates. They build off of each other, causing you to have more and more ideas, faster and faster.
This is what I call "creative momentum"
When you can no longer keep up with your ideas, it's tempting to want to write them down so you don't lose the good ones. But this creates plans, which will KILL your momentum the second you try to look them up.
First of all, you have to stop to write down an idea, which severely slows any creative momentum you might already have. And later on, looking up an idea is VERY different from getting an idea. You get no momentum from that, no exciting inspiration. Because it's memory, not creativity.
In fact, plans will make it harder to come up with new ideas because you'll be afraid of contradicting some part of your elaborate plan.
Once something is written down, you feel like you cannot change it. It feels permanent.
Ideas need to change in order to evolve and grow. This is what makes them inspiring. A new idea is an old idea that you've suddenly thought of an improvement for.
It's all about remaining in a state of experimentation.
My best projects were the ones where I simply kept ideas and minor plans in my head as I worked. I'd think about the current scene, and the very next scene, but throw away any ideas for anything beyond that. Then as I worked on the next scene, possibilities would emerge in my mind for what could happen next, based on what I was currently doing and seeing.

Working on attack effects

I saw some videos on YouTube from The Slow-mo Guys, and I realized that pieces of their footage would be great for creating attack animations.

So for my first animation, I've created Ember, using a very tiny piece of footage from Fire Tennis

Yeah, I know it says "scratch", I just threw it in there to test how it looked.

Meanwhile, I've just finished keying-out an even better flame, which I'll probably use for the Napalm attack.

I love how she looks mysterious and maybe even a little dangerous.
Which is fitting since your first pokemon is weak against them at the beginning of the game.

Pokeplay... A pokemon test-game I made

I've been sitting on this for quite awhile.
This is another pokemon game that I created a long time ago to test some gameplay ideas I had that would be out-of-place in the main game. It's not quite complete. It was an experiment that took on a life of its own.

Wow. Just wow.
While reading this, I felt like you were reading my mind, and replied to it.
You just showed me the origin of my writing block. I don't want to go deeper into that topic of mine, but I used to write every single one of my ideas down, all of them, and when I try to puzzle them into the actual plot, they do not fell good anymore. They do not feel creative anymore. They may be awesome as hell, but its, as you said, kind of boring. There is no momentum left at this point.
You sir, are a very wise one.
Anyway, I don't think I like that reality, but I cannot change it.
(I hope you understand what I mean by all that xD)

I should've known that would happen.
Every time I upload a new pokemon game to dropbox, it crashes from all the sudden traffic.
Let's try hosting it directly from my website instead.

I'm not sure how useful this would be for me.
I very rarely work with GIF's unless I want to reliably show an animation online.
And you generally cannot record a video playing on your computer because the video playback is handled by the graphics card instead of the computer's main processor, so screenshot programs almost-always end up recording a blank black area where the rendered video would be.
(There is one exception: You can record videos being played by Flash because it doesn't use the graphics card, which is why YouTube can be recorded)

As for getting footage from the Slo-Mo guys on YouTube, I use After Effects to do color-keying to remove the background, so I need to work with it as a video anyway. Then I can export it as a FLV flash video file that can be played directly within the pokemon game, allowing the smooth animation to take up very little space, and even have translucent areas.

(The flamePuff animation from before takes up 115 KB as a GIF, but only 15 KB as an FLV video. To put this into perspective, there are sound-effects in the game that take up more memory than this!)

I usually use Snagit to record video-tutorials or take screenshots,
and VirtualDub to convert videos into GIF's.

I guess this program might be useful for showing time-lapse progress of digital art being made,
but even then I'd probably just record a low-framerate video for something like that.
It looks like a neat program. I'm just not sure what I might use it for.

There's something else I forgot to mention:
When you try to create something based on an idea you wrote down, it feels like you're doing it twice.
Doing things twice is boring.

I'm not sure exactly why it feels like that, but maybe it's because the act of writing it down is an act of creation,
or maybe it's because your thoughts are re-tracing the idea for a second time when you read it later.
Maybe thinking things twice, is boring?

I sincerely apologize if my following question is rude, offends, or aggravates someone. I was just curious when you plan on posting an update humbird0? Are you going to wait till the game if "fully completed", make a release when you complete each city, or some other timetable? I see all this work and the like going into this game and it makes me want to see how it will used and how the story will continue to play out.

The PokePlay game I just recently posted is a completely different game that uses the same game-engine. I originally created it a long time ago to test some gameplay ideas I had, and to just play around in general. It's not a 100% complete game, but there a fair amount there, so I thought I'd post it.

Ok. Good to know. Also dropbox is still dead. Is there somewhere else we can go to see to images for the voting?
