Interesting enough, I was like you in the past. I liked Command & Conquer (version 1, with the beige tanks - GDI, with people taking 'afirmatiff!') tons of older DOS games like Flashback, and Heroes II / Heroes III and Heroes V (I didnt like Heroes IV). Heroes 2 is nice and it one of those games you can't buy (if you can, tell me). I know there is a Heroes2 version for windows. Civilization 2 and 5 is also really nice (but not free).
There is SCUMM VM, a program who loads old DOS RPG/adventure ones, like Indiana Jones, Beneath of Steel Sky (there is a newer version for the Iphone, this is not free), Sam & Max, The Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island. You can even select other languages for them and use graphic improvements like '2XSAI' and 'SuperEagle'. These are technically freeware, but not newer versions like Monkey Island 1 and 2 for Windows, using a totally revamped graphics. But interesting enough, It lost its magic (for me), because you dont have all those buttons (GIVE, OPEN, PULL, TALK) anymore.
And of course, there are emulators of Sega, NeoGeo, SNES, etc (for PC). They're not technically free, but as we live in the XBOX/PS3/WII era, older consoles are not much of a concern. Anyway , I own a SNES anyway, and I still enjoy some of its games
As for more adventure games, there is one FREEWARE, and even with some XXX. The name is 'Second Face'. I enjoyed it. There is also OOO (Out of Order). Its' non XXX but a complete adventure game (point and click). Its also freeware.
Duke3d is now freeware (with source code!) But I'm not too fond of shooters anymore.
Most of commercial games that is now Freeware can be found in the WIKIPEDIA:
