This is actually my basic plan already, I just mentioned as much in the downtime announcement, but basically my intention is to have ads only for guest users initially and, if I can figure out a simple way to do it, I will restrict them to only forum and topic pages, so the board index and login pages won't display anything. This should give our regulars a clear path for signing in to see what they've missed, which they should be doing anyway due to the caching of guest pages.

General gaming, movies, and maybe some college ads since college students/soon-to-be college students seem to frequent here. I'm sure there is a diverse fan base but that seems to be the "standard" age group and college things have been brought up/implied in various conversations and announcements referencing the happenings of one's life.

All are good, mostly clean topics and could inspire a few conversations as to the popularity of their contents.

Personally, I don't have any problem with the advertisements, as long as they are not of the pop-up nature, or any other annoying type. If they just stand by as banners, and have no forced sound (though most sites ban those), any theme is fine. My vote was General interest though, because I am kind of against the adult themed ads, because they might limit the accessibility of the forums. Adult ads make reading during work/classes much harder, reading in public... okay, that depends on the person :P. But anyway, a reason that I like this site is because it is serious, and I would like it to remain that way. Adding adult ads will probably ruin (for the lack of a better word) the experience of such a clean environment :/ It is possible though that such ads pay more, and that isn't an ignorable factor. Using any other type of (non-annoying)ads, is a completely neutral move in my opinion, thus I simply wouldn't care. Please consider if the advantage of putting 18+ ads overweights the impact they will have on the forums' image.

EDIT: After actually reading the other posts (sry :P), the idea to disable advertisements for users really makes up for everything. If you implement that, then there is no point in refraining from the use porn ads if they give a better income!

I can sympathize with Sugar's concern for freedom of use without criticism or getting in trouble from teachers. But the site already shows people's avatars that are pretty dirty, so there is no aid in that matter. I would not prefer adult ads, but only because most tend to be unsafe. If you can find sites that are safe, I will have no quarrel with adult ads. By safe I mean no malicious software downloading to your computer without consent. As well as invasive ads.

Avatars/signatures can be turned off in the UCP, if you want to keep the site teacher-safe.

Do you know how much I twitched when some stupid adult ad popup from some anime site told me '5 people in my town were wanting to 'date' me' ?
Not only do I live in a small town where there aren't 5 people of human origin, but the idea an ad knew where I lived made my paranioa spike. I've haven't come out from under my bed for days.

By the way ads are fine even if they are still there as a member.

Have you tried a proxy IP or something like that? Cus', you know, you don't need cookies to find where people are based on the connection they establish to a server.

Being new, I might be late on topic but advertisement is something that might turn out to be necessary sometimes to keep a place alive. Of course, like everyone, I'll prefer not but like a majority, I tend to associate this website to games and I think this is the closest it should be.

However, advertisement of adult games (good ones!) would even be better if it allow us to discover new things. Let's admit it... Some are just bad and we would prefer to never hear of them...

I voted for gaming and adult-ads, these really fit the site more. As long as the adult-ads somehow "fits" I won't be annoyed too much by them. Have been to some other forums where they didn't mix with the content at all.
