The Market Ward
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Shima's fierce look directed at the potion merchant manages to take him back for a moment. It shuts him up for the duration of her telling him off. Once both women leave his stall however, his disturbed, frightened look cracks like ice on a lake that has someone too heavy tread upon it. It shatters. He raises a hand to cover his mouth as the laughter escapes, as though he'd just told himself a great joke. The threat did frighten him at first, but the fear didn't last long. He makes no moves to follow the two women though, or call over to them, he's already had his fun.

As Shinma and Kayleesa make their way into the market further, they do indeed find another merchant who's sign in the street indicates them to be a potion merchant. This one has a more permanent looking store front, one with wooden walls and a roof over it, and shelves of potions on display for whomever comes to shop at his location. He's dressed in white robes that hang over his rather rotund figure, and his middle aged face sports a bushy mustache.

The Gamboler's Ace
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

When Riley makes her way back up to the room she'd rented, she finds the large muscled man, with several scars picked out to make him seem more rugged and manly, still nude and shackled to her bed. The timer for his 'resurrection' was still counting down, twenty minutes until he'd respawn at the Church here in the Guild Ward. She had time yet to recollect her shackles before they joined him at the Church, making his prediciment already quite difficult to explain even more embarassing.

Down below, in the bar, just as Greg is gearing up to go adventuring, another player makes his way into the bar. His avatar is in his mid twenties, a tussel of brown hair that gives him the wild look of a man of action, along with the five o'clock shadow of a beard belonging to a man who doesn't have time to shave, his adventures far to urgent. He's got a chain mail shirt for armour and a white pair of loose pants tucked into traveller's boots. A hand and a half sword is in it's scabbard slung over his shoulder as he makes his way on over to the bar. He leans on it and offers Jo Hawke a smile, "Mystery, is it? I'd heard a player was running this bar, wanted to come see it for myself." [[GM note, unless I'm reading that wrong and the character's 'handle' is Jo Hawke and the real life player's name is a mystery... In which case, this guy calls her Jo.]]

The Briar Wood
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

As soon as Lucy closes her eyes, she can feel a difference. There is sunlight upon her face, warm and welcoming. The breeze suddenly dies off, leaving the area still. That sound of windchimes grows just a little louder. Then, she can hear voices. When she choses to open her eyes, she will find herself sitting not where she was originally, but somewhere else entirely.

She still sits within a clearing in a forest, though this time the foliage offers a clear view of the sky above. The sky itself is a golden colour, unlike the clear blue that everyone is accustomed to. Even the trees seem more friendly. The trees form a ring around the clearing, however between the trees as one looks out, one can see a thick purple fog, bubbling and roiling, yet never spilling into this clearing.

The clearing is filled with groups of faeries. Each faerie looks much like an adult woman, though standing only the height of a ten year old. They have dragonfly style wings, and are dressed in diaphanous short dresses that leave very little to the imagination. They lounge about the clearing, some of them playing chess, others drawing a squirrel as it poses upon a branch. Other than the faeries, there is but one person sitting upon a chair. He is tall, he would be six and a half feet tall if he were standing upright. Bare chested, he is very well muscled and covered in henna tattos of various tribal designs. He wears a cloak made of leaves over his shoulders, an his legs are those of a goat. His forehead has a pair of ram's horns spiraling out from his oak brown hair. He lounges upon his chair looking quite bored, completely uninterested by anything going on around him. Until of course he notices Lucy sitting there in the middle of the clearing. He turns his eyes to her, and watches with an intent curiousity.

Salora was busy exploring the fogged up area around her. It looked like this was some sort of grassland or whatever before the fog rolled in. Meaning it was all grassy and stuff before the game designers decided that wasn't exciting enough. She was just beginning to notice more pedestals, but she unfortunately gets ambushed by a little, blue monster. It was some kind of blue orc, imp creature, but she doesn't have time to decide what the creature reminds her off as it is coming to attack.
Being unable to bring her bow around in time to shoot the creature, Salora then uses the arrow in her right hand to stab the creature, as she turns around to face it. Her other hand is busy clipping the bow back so she can grab her dagger and fight this little upstart. She plans to use the arrow as a small spear to stab at the creature attacking her 'till she gets her dagger drawn and she can really slice the blue monster open.
By the time you realize this doesn't say anything. It's too late to stop reading.

Mel raised an eyebrow, a slightly amused expression coming over her face as the mage girl growled as she approached, a grumpy look on her face as she dusted off her tattered robe. The rats had done quite a number on it..
The Fae didn't say anything, instead leaving Severine's anger to simmer as she turned to look over at Arcanos Keep. The wizard tower was a majestic sight, that was for sure. She briefly wondered if the wizards inside would immediately attack on sight..or perhaps at least start a conversation? Fruit for thought. Altera's NPC AI was unlike any other she had ever seen before.
A pronounced huff made the girl glance back to the source of it: Severine. Was she calming down at long last? Well, only one way to find out..
"Um, I'm sure you can find a tailor to fix it. Don't be too mad."
She tried to console the mage over the actually rather fetching rips in her robe. Apparently rats were fashion designers in Altera. Well..not that she wanted random rips and tears in her outfit, though. She would preferably pass on that one, especially in a world like Altera.
Severine didn't reply, instead pulling her hood over her head as she turned to Melancholia, as if she didn't want her to see her face. It seemed like a cold gesture, but Mel didn't catch it. She didn't usually deal with other people much despite being an avid player of MMOs.
Mel gave Severine a confused look as the mage simply seemed to be standing there, deep in thought. Or...could you go AFK in Altera? That shouldn't be possible since they were trapped in the game, right? She circled around the other player curiously, stopping once in front of her to wave her hand in front of Severine's eyes, trying to catch her attention. It worked as Sev seemed to snap out of some sort of reverie, immediately shooting out at a question at her, asking her if she knew someone named either Dahlia or Denieve.

"Dahlia? Denieve?"
The Fae girl blinked in surprise. How did this girl know her sister and her best friend? Of course she knew them both. Adellia's elder sister was named Denieve and her best friend was Dahlia, or Dahl, as she was so fond of calling her. Gods, Deni had been so immature for her age, gushing nonstop to Adell about her new friend..
She couldn't forget Dahlia even if she wanted to, her name instilled into her brain with countless hours of Denieve's excited chatter.
Severine didn't wait for her reply, instead stating that she was going to go right down to Arcanos Keep, her very same destination. Their purpose, however..well, Mel doubted Severine was going there to sightsee like she was.
"Uh, wait up!"
Melancholia called after Severine who had continued on without her, clutching the bronze lantern close to her as she jogged after the Desma. She caught up easily with the girl, no difficult task by any means given the leisurely stroll Severine was currently travelling at.
"Um..how do you know my sister?"
She inquired politely as they walked towards the tower, the cobblestone path they were walking on becoming less and less knobbly until it finally smoothed out into solid road beneath their feet. An indication sure as any that they were nearing the tower.
The girl stared up at the Keep. Wow. It sure seemed a lot bigger than when she was flying. Returning her attention back down to the road itself, she noticed numerous gargoyle statues lining the way to the double doors that were the entrance of the tower. Mel eyed the stony guards with a wary look as they neared the doors. Gargoyles at a magic tower seemed kinda..practical. She highly doubted if any wizard worth his salt would be unable to enchant the gargoyles to become some sort of guard dog.

"Hey, hang on a bit."
Melancholia muttered to Severine as she stepped infront of the mage, clicking her fingers once to ignite a blue flame at her fingertips. She flicked the flame into the lantern, the Faefire catching immediately and lighting the path with its eerie blue glow.
She raised the lantern, letting the blue light illuminate the gargoyles that lined the path. Perhaps she was just being paranoid, but it never hurt to be safe rather than sorry..

"Because Dahl never shuts up about her..."

Severine, or rather the teenage girl named Emma Hayes, mumbled back to Mel as they plodded on. The gaps in the hem of her robe were letting in a breeze, which for what was supposed to be a recreation of a warm and pleasant spring wind was incredibly irritating. Her thigh-high boots were her only defense against nature's malicious attempts to comfort her. As Arcanos Keep drew closer -- lending eye to just how enormous it was -- Sev cracked her knuckles, pondering this strange turn of events. This Fae, Melancholia, must have been Adellia, the elusive sister of Denieve Reinings: her big sister Dahlia's BFF. Days where Deni didn't show up in conversation or in person were rare for the Hayes family. Pretty much everyone in their hometown had known how close Dahl and Deni were, always hanging out at each other's houses and going to movies. A few times, they'd brought her along, but there was something about the tightness of Dahlia and Denieve's bond that always made Emma feel a little... jealous, maybe. Her sister was admired and respected by many for her mature, relaxed and cool personality, but the strength of the beret-wearing girl's friendship with Denieve was almost scary. Severine frowned, annoyed that this topic had come her attention again; the last BFF she'd had was in fifth grade, before they had moved away and rendered Emma an introvert up to the very day she plugged into Altera.

But, in the end, she knew very little about Adellia. Deni mentioned her sometimes when she came over to their house, but to Emma, she was still a total stranger. Severine the mage bit her tongue, uncertain if she wanted the other girl's company or not. Dahlia had been on the fence about joining her in Altera -- not that Emma really wanted her company, anyway, since Dahl wasn't as good as her at games anyway -- but she knew that her older sister wouldn't have wanted her to offend any of the Reinings family. Grudgingly, she decided not to pursue vengeance against the Fae for stealing her kills, but as usual she found herself wondering how long she could go before the other girl's presence started to become exhausting. She would admit that she had a threshold for people -- a strict one, which is probably why she had no friends, and if the Fae ended up being a total nooblet who ended up tripping over her own shoelaces it'd be triple the irritation. But again, she found the idea of ditching the other girl and risking her sister's scrutiny (well, not that she'd ever know since Emma was trapped inside the fucking game), so maybe she'd just turn heel and run if one of them died. That'd be a good opportunity to escape. The ground began to smooth and harden into a clearly-defined path and Severine looked up. The mass of Arcanos Keep really hit her in that instant. It wasn't real, but it was still admittedly rather...

"Dahl's my big sister. I'm Emma," she half-sighed, as if she hadn't wanted to introduce her real self, "Dahl never shuts up about Deni." she added, meanwhile wondering what kind of enemies and loot would be contained within the Keep's high walls. There had to have been at least ten floors, and no doubt they'd grow tougher as one ascended. Well, she was just trying to see how far she could get, anyway. Her eyes flicked to the columns of gargoyles that punctuated the sides of the path, looming over them as they walked. Alarm bells rang in Sev's head as she remembered that gargoyles as enemies in fantasy games weren't uncommon, and it'd be child's play for NPC's who were represented as strong magicians to have enchanted them as sentinels. Their stony looks were awfully mean-spirited.

Perhaps it was just a little intimidating. Just a little.

She looked curiously at Mel as she lit her lantern with a pittance of blue flame -- Faefire, she remembered. The mysteries of the Fae's obviously enchanted lantern came to mind again. A lantern seemed like a really unusual tool, but as Mel -- or rather, Adellia -- shone its eerie light over the columns of gargoyles, Sev already had it figured that it possessed some sort of detection magic. Perhaps it could reveal stealthed enemies or traps. The Destruction Mage bit her lip, a little envious that she didn't possess a similar item. Then again, maybe her Elemental magic could substitute.

"I'm just gonna see how far I can get and if there's any good stuff inside." she remarked as she looked upon the enormous door, thigh-high boots clicking on the stone path. Already, her palm was clenching as she started thinking up ways to fight the gargoyles if they sprang to life.

Lucy's first thought when she opened her eyes was that of curiosity, then she noticed the ominous purple fog gathered around the clearing, finally she noticed the faeries and the strange man.
She quickly stood up and put her hand back on the staff, she looked around, still a tad confused on how she got here, she noticed the man staring at her and stared back

Shima's eyes widen a bit as Kayleesa reveals herself as one of the founding members of the guild. She stands by everything she said, but it seems rather tactless to say it in front of someone so high up in the Vanguard and, despite earlier behaviors, she DOES possess some small sense of tact. And least Kayleesa seems to understand.

"If you don't mind my comments, I surely can't mind yours since mine were a lot more defacing than your own. I stand by everything I've said, but it's more than a small comfort to know that at least one of the founders do not fit my paranoia at all." Shima says, looking carefully away in embarrassment. "That said, I wouldn't mind working with you and members of the guild you trust, even if at present time I do not have an interest in joining myself. As I've said, my goal is to escape this game and I will not turn down any like-minded help I can get." she adds with a small smile. Hell, if she can do this right, maybe she can snag Greg from the bar and make her squad based around Kayleesa's people instead of having to rely on the drunkards from earlier.

Kayleesa's worried expression dissolved into a relieved smile, glad that what she had said hadn't turned Shima away. There was nothing worse than meeting someone who thought like you and yet wouldn't associate with you due to a difference in opinion over the subject you agreed on. This happened more in real life than it had here, although since she had only been here a week and had been alive out there for quite a bit longer, it wasn't really the best comparison to make. The fact that she maybe had helped relieve just a bit of the paranoia that Shima had about her guild was good as well, since she legitimately wanted the martial artist to trust both her and the Vanguard. Trust went a long way when you had to count on someone else to stop a sword or spell from colliding with your back, and if they were going to work together at some point, then that was more than enough reason to form some of it now.

"Sure, that's fine." she said, a bit more enthusiasm in her voice now that the awkward bit was over. At least, she saw it as being over, but Shima might have a different opinion. "Unfortunately, I don't know too many of out members besides the founders personally right now, and as far as I know, most of us are taking on something by ourselves at the present time. I've been scouting the surrounding area for most of my time here, so I haven't been able to get to know too many people yet."

She paused for a minute, then added, "I wouldn't mind helping you out, if you needed it. I do need to check out the Rift at some point, but I don't see why I can't take a small detour first." While she did know that going to the Rift was important, it was a characteristic of hers to help people that needed it over what she was going to do, and since gaining experience was part of her goal, along with the fact that she wasn't sure how tough the Rift would be, it would make sense to gain some before she went there. Besides, maybe she wouldn't have to go alone now.

The Misty Vale
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

The fog imp is all over Salora, claws flailing as it tries to take advantage of it's successful ambush on the elf. With her first strikes dependent on the improvized weapon of an arrow, and the desperate need to draw a knife, she's in a spot of trouble.

(Combat! Salora, Might is 1d4, no bonus for weapons, 1d4+0=4. Fog Imp, 1d6, no bonuses 'cuz this is a n00bz zone monster, 1d6=1. Victory for Salora, she can feel free to pose her victory. 2 xp earned, no
treasure, the body will dissolve into fog once slain.)

Arcanos' Keep
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

(Cunning check, 1d8 for Severine's cunning, +2 for Mel's lantern, 1d8+2=10. Gargoyles, 1d8 cunning, +3 for stonework cameoflage, 1d8+3=5)

They pass down the cobblestone route and in between the imposing presence of some of the gargoyles. Indeed, it's an intimidating atmosphere, Each gargoyle is the height of the average man, but it's limbs are enlongated, giving them an alien look. None of them have hair, and their ears and teeth are pointed to give them a goblin like look. The first statues do not respond as Severine and Mel pass between them. Nerve wracking as it is, they remain stationary. The second pair is more so, for now they have gargoyles at their back and their front, their eyes carved in such a way that their gaze seems to be following the two women. Unless of course their eyes really are following the progress.

When Mel's lantern comes close to the third pair, that's when both women are able to pick out the slight aura around them. Marking them as some kid of live creatures rather than pieces of the scenery. It's nearly impossible to see how their muscles clench as they prepare to ambush their prey, having now waited in ambush for... well, a week, but they think it is much longer.

(You two have spotted these gargoyles before they attack, so have time to make any preparations you chose to before a fight breaks out.)

The Briar Wood
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

When Lucy looks back at the horned man on the chair, he then leans forward in his seat. He places his elbows upon his knees while his intense eyes study her. After he studies her for some time, he then smiles a small smile, "Beautiful. Good, you are always more interesting when you are beautiful. Welcome to my glade. It will be good to finally meet someone new again. My name is Torgo, and you will be my guest here in the glade. I suspect we will get to know each other very well, for you will be the first visitor I've had here in quite some time, and I will be ill inclined to part with your company any time soon."

Shima nods at Kayleesa's situation. Well, it's not like she could just have EVERYTHING fall in her lap like that, but having an in to trustworthy people in Vanguard is enough of a bonus as is. Then she shakes her head at Kayleesa's suggestion of helping out.

"If it were just me, I'd agree without hesitation. However, there are 3 other people working with me to bring in a bounty and, as much as 2 of them rub me wrong, it would be a heinous thing for me to go without them." she says dejectedly. If she could ditch them without it being a wound to her honor, she'd do it in a heartbeat. Well, maybe she'd go back for Greg since he's the only one who didn't show up drunk or hungover, but that's about it. "Afterwards, you'll most definitely be among my list of people to call on first." Then she remembers why she's out in the market in the first place. Seeing as they've arrived at a more reputable potions shop, she enters, hopefully with Kayleesa in tow, and seeks out the shop owner.

Although it was a slight disappointment, Kayleesa could see why Shima wouldn't want to just ditch the other people. Now that she knew that there were others already working with her, Kay would have said that she couldn't take their spots anyways, as getting rid of someone that you already agreed to work with without them even knowing wasn't something anyone with any honor at all should do. She certainly wouldn't, and Shima didn't strike her as the type of person that would either, even if she hadn't straight-out said that she wasn't going to. In any event, it meant that she would be continuing with what she had planned, and going to explore the Rift. Four people for a single quest seemed like a lot, and splitting rewards was never something anyone wanted to do, so adding someone else to the equation would just make people irritated, no matter what they brought to the table.

"Alright. I'll make sure to let you know if I need help later on, too." the angel told her, tucking the name away in her list of people she classed as in-game friends. It seemed that she would be going to the Rift alone after all, but since that was her goal from the start it was hard to be too disappointed about that.

Still, that didn't mean she was leaving just yet. The second potion shop that had come up as they were walking seemed a bit more...professional, and hopefully this merchant wouldn't be one to make lewd comments about either of them. It also seemed to have a much larger stock, which was always something that could be classified as good. Maybe she could ask the merchant what he would suggest for going to the Rift as well, since she wasn't sure what kind of effects the enemies there might cause.

For the moment, Kayleesa remained behind Shima, following her to find the owner. It seemed only fair that the martial artist get first pick of potions, since Kay already had two of them.

(Sorry, the internet ate my last post. Hope this one works.)
Riley looks at her fallen fellow knight with mild annoyance, having meant to KO him rather than kill him. Not that she minded committing a "murder" online, but he could've had the decency to give her XP for the kill. Then again, maybe PK'ing didn't give you rewards. Crap. She really should've payed more attention to the tutorial before getting into this VR stuff. Then again, technically she should've just avoided this freakin' fantasy game and gone on with her boring, mundane life. The familiar haze of anger relieves her of spending too much time ruminating upon could-have-been, and clears her mind enough to bring her back to the task at hand. Retrieving her shackles, hopefully without further incident, she turns to regard her victim once more.

After a few moments of thought, she decides she may as well go "all in" with this whole "ganking" thing. Retrieving her pencil from her inventory, Raji sets to work. A new mustache, a pair of glasses, and one doodle of the poor slob's "sword" later, she steps back, satisfied. Pocketing the pencil the Dark Knight heads out of her room, hoping there isn't a "PK'er bounty board" up yet. That'd be just her luck, really. Damn player police and their cra- Right, things to do. Shaking her head clear of red mist, the heavily armored warrior heads down the stairs with caution, hopefully avoiding another embarrassing tumble. From there she walks out of the Ace, ignoring the appearance of another adventurer in favor of getting some shopping done. All she needed, as far as she could think of, were; three minor healing potions, two antidotes, and a portable map of the city area. If all goes quietly, the obvious next move is to head to the town exit to await the rest of the party, trying to remember if the Gankers give their members any benefits.

Fuck me, I knew it... thought Sev, growling.

She slowed to a stop quietly, even though she could already feel the bald, goblin-like gargoyles homing in on them. To no surprise, Mel's lantern revealed the subtlest contradictions in the stonework that telegraphed their intention to pounce on herself and the Fae. Even though it was just a game, the aqua-haired mage's heart was thumping. Without the confidence of being a high level fortified by lots of strong items, the idea of having to fight the two gargoyles was intimidating, even if she wouldn't admit her fear. It was an ironic testament, perhaps, to the immersion that Altera provided. Even though being locked in here made it hard for Sev to appreciate Ether Works' hard... well, work in creating such a deep game, she did realize that the chance to experience moments precisely like this were why she bought the game in the first place. She turned around, looking up at the two stonework sentinels without care for whether they knew she had spotted them or not. They hadn't moved just yet, which gave Sev and Mel a one time advantage in being able to act first. Sev really hated being caught off guard. Unlike before, the aqua-haired mage didn't bother for her wood staff: it wouldn't do jack against stone.

Doesn't matter, though... she thought. In thinking about the prospect of having to fight a gargoyle, she had produced one way to approach such a situation. Solid rock probably wouldn't cave to just a few fireballs and swords would just bounce off of it ineffectively, but the nature of stone was hard to ignore. Stone could be made very brittle, rather easily. Tense, she stepped up to Mel, leaning forward to whisper just in case the gargoyles' AI was intelligent enough to read their motives.

"I'll take the one on the left..." she said quietly, indicating to it with a nod, "You take the one on the right. I think I know how we can damage them." she continued, gesturing likewise to the gargoyle on the right.

"Nuke it with fire magic first so it becomes really hot. I dunno if you have ice magic, but if you do, blast it with it when it's hot enough so the stone just explodes." she explained quickly. Hot and cold: a very basic principle in science, although considering this was a fantasy world, Sev knew her approach was a theory at best. Either way, it seemed more clever than battering at the two statues blindly. With that, she stepped backward from the statues, raising her hands threateningly. Her left suddenly came ablaze with a giant, opaque orange-red flame that wavered in the gentle wind. Beneath the corona of fire, her fingers and palm glowed red hot with the intensity of the flame she was summoning -- an expression of how hot of a flame she was trying to focus. Her right hand, meanwhile, had turned crystalline as solid ice had enveloped it like a glove all the way down her forearm. Chilled white mist flowed from her palm. She knew she'd have stronger effects this time: two elements were easier to wield than all four.

"Ready?" she asked as the elements in her palm intensified.

"OK, go." she spoke after just two seconds. With that, Severine thrust her left hand forward and the air shimmered as a neat, almost liquid stream of red flame roared from her fingertips, defiantly cutting through the opposing wind as if it were a solid mass to bathe the leftmost gargoyle head to toe in the streaming flame. Maintaining her flamethrower with all of her might, the Destruction Mage willed an ever hotter flame into existence: the gargoyle would have to glow red hot. For several seconds, she persisted in her efforts before at last cutting the flame loose once she felt it was enough: it was impossible to see the gargoyle through the haze of fire. Then, immediately, the mage thrust her right hand forward and from the glove of ice, a howling, frozen blast of white air and ice erupted from the tips of her fingers, seeking to consume the hopefully red hot gargoyle in its icy reaches. Expansion and contraction, hopefully, would cause the stone to crack and erupt under the immense pressure that came from being heated and then cooled so rapidly.

Melancholia, or the girl Adellia Reinings grinned for the first time since meeting Severine as she spoke about Dahl never shutting up about Deni. She could piece the puzzle of who Sev really was from the single sentence alone. Emma Hayes. Sis had mentioned that Dahlia also had a little sister who was pretty much also an introvert like her. Adellia was quite the loner, really. Classified as a "NEET"(not in education, employment, or training") by her parents and sister, Adel mostly stayed at home and.."explored". And no, she wasn't examining every inch of her house. She was an explorer of MMOs. Traversing the vast, beautiful world of Altera had been a dream when the preview had came out. No longer was the world only confined to her computer screen, she could be in the world itself. Just like Sis was doing when she was travelling around..
Adellia snapped out of her little think session as Emma confirmed that she was indeed the person herself, adding once again that Dahlia never shut up about Denieve.
"I understand. The pain we go through."
She grinned, feeling a sense of camaraderie for the first time in one of the many MMOs she had played. But wow. What had been the odds of them both meeting? One in a million, as people were so fond of saying? Their encounter had honestly been nothing short of a miracle.
"Well..I'm coming along, too! I did just want to take a look at the outside of the Keep..but going in sounds good to me, too. Besides, I can't just leave you alone, can I?"
She gave the other spellcaster a rather cocky smile.

Only seconds later, she was regretting her decision. Those gargoyles sure looked scary.
Mel swallowed nervously, her fingers already tensed in the motion to click as they stepped into the presence of the gargoyles. She had good reason to feel uneasy..each of their stony visages seemed as if they were staring at the two of them proceeding down the path. Way to make a girl feel unwelcome. Bloody old wizards. The Faefire Lantern would obviously warn them beforehand of any hidden enemies or traps, but who knew if it didn't manage to uncover them?
Melancholia had never really been brave or courageous, quite the opposite, in fact. So it came to no surprise to the girl that she could feel her heart beating in her throat, expecting the gargoyles to come alive at any time now, without warning.

"Well..maybe they're just..decorations after a-"
She muttered as they passed the first pair of gargoyles and walked past the second, almost immediately after eating her words as a slight aura glimmered around the third pair of gargoyles, her lantern illuminating the two stone creatures with its blue light. Damn. Well, at least the gargoyles had no way of knowing that they knew they were there..and so they had the chance to launch an preemptive on the stony bastards. The ambushers were now the ambushed. How ironic.

Emma immediately took charge, relaying out a well-thought plan to Mel. Hot and cold. The basics of expansion and contraction. Highly effective against stone, which would otherwise be near impervious to several elements.
"I have Faefire. I'm not too good with ice, but I'll do my best."
Mel said, quickly setting her lantern down and creating Faeflame in both her hands with a pronounced click of her fingers. As the Fae concentrated her mana, the flames gradually grew bigger till the point where she could feel heat on her fingers. Faefire was never supposed to burn its owner. Melancholia was quickly approaching the point where the Faefire's strength would be too great for her to control.

"On your go!"
Mel muttered, her brow pinched with concentration as Severine asked if she was ready.

As Severine gave the green light, Mel slammed her hands together, merging both the Faeflame into one single, massive entity. She thrusted her hands forward, a flamethrower similar to Severine's own erupting from the huge ball of Faeflame in the girl's slender hands. The flame roasted the gargoyle on the right, heating the stone with scorching temperatures till it glowed red hot.
Melancholia cut off the flamethrower, dousing the Faeflame with another click of her fingers as she stepped back and took a stance, arm bent back not unlike an Olympian javelin-thrower. Air vapor began to condense onto her palm, freezing into a javelin within seconds. While not as intense as her Faeflame nor as offensive, the ice javelin would certainly serve the purpose of cooling down the gargoyle quickly.
Adding an extra surge of freezing wind to carry the spear of ice, Adellia hurled the javelin with whatever strength she could muster, aiming right for the gargoyle's chest where it was most likely to hit.

Lucy looks somewhat confused as Torgo introduces himself, but still bows in respect
"It is nice to meet you Torgo, I am a mage that was tasked to purge an evil presence here"
She once again looks at the strange purple fog
"You wouldn't happen to know where I could find a clue to it's location?"
She decided to ignore the beautiful comment
Sae the mindin´ in yer heid
Unrowes afore yer een
Frae hours o´ sweet yestreen
Aye the ember deid in monie a heid
Fare ye well I´m pertin away
I say farewell tae the warld
Mind me weel
I say farewell tae the warld

The Market Ward
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

With the arrival of Shinma and Kayleesa at the merchant's stall, he looks up to them promptly with an ingratiating smile, "One moment," before he turns quickly to a pot on the simmer. Reaches above the pot, plucking the leaves off of a spring of herbs suspended above his cook pot, then drops them down into the bubbling russet liquid with the glee of a child at play. That done, he gives the pot a quick stir with a glass rod before he turns back to the new customers. Setting the rod aside, he bows his head to the two ladies, "Greetings, and welcome to my humble stall. What brings you fine ladies to me on this lovely day?"

Riley finds herself entering the now familiar world of the Market Ward. By the time she arrives, the one potion merchant that managed to sell out all his inventory even while mortally offending two of the three potential customers he has had is just finishing packing up his rather makeshift stall. The martial artist and angel are still in the area further down the road, speaking with a potion merchant still open for business.

Arcanos' Keep
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

During the time that Severine and Melancholia hatch their scheme, the gargoyles seem to be content to let them chat. Severine's behaviour can leave little doubt to the creatures that she is on to them, but they lurk in ambush none the less. As soon as the ladies begin their spellcasting however, the two creatures lurch into motion. They stand up tall on their pedestals, their bat like wings stretching up into the sky. Their wingspan is as long as their own heights, and the wings are large enough to put the travellers into shadow. Their roars are loud, the sounds of a berzerker's battle cry. Their defiance uttered, the gargoyles leap into action at the same time as the fire spells fly from the hands fo the two arcane casters.

(Combat! Severine and Melancholia roll Sev's 1d8 Cunning, get Sev's +2 to spellcasting, and get +1 for numbers. A total of 1d8+3=10 The Gargoyles get 1d8 for their Might, a +5 bonus from their Stony Hide, and +1 for numbers. A total of 1d8+6=7. Victory to Severine and Melancholia, quite the stroke of luck! This victory is very hard fought, keep it in mind as you pose your triumph over your foes. Severine is awarded 22 experience points, and levels up. Melancholia is awarded 22 experience points and levels up. Luck is not on your side though, there is no treasure drop from either gargoyle. I'm going to post the leveling up rules in the OOC thread.)

The Briar Wood
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

The creature upon the chair leans back, resting himself casually now as he awaits what he suspects her questions shall be. His hands rest together in the traditional 'Mr Burns Pyramid of Power'. His expression remains amused, despite his seeming relaxed demeanor. "Ah, you make an assumption, that you are where you were. You dwell no longer within Briar Wood, but instead you dwell here within my glade. The faerie ring that you entered was a gateway here to my realm. Here, there is no evil presence, there is only what you see here. And lo, I wish there did indeed dwell an evil presence here, for doing battle with it would prove to be a task of great interest. Perhaps we could convince some of my faerie servants here to masquerade as an evil presence though if we care to indulge in such a fantasy, it could be amusing. I suggest you put from your mind this evil presence, it is no longer a worry for you, now that you are here with me."

Mel sank to the ground, exhausted from spending too much mana in a short amount of time. Damn it, this was why she didn't like combat! It was so darn tiring. Still, as she watched her experience bar fill up to the max with leftover to carry on to the next level, there was this sense of satisfaction she had never really felt before. Sure, that had been tiring..but also exhilarating in some way. Her digital heart pumped adrenalin through her coded veins, a silly grin crossing her face as she realized just how amazing and real Altera was all over again.

After a short while of very well-deserved rest, she managed to pick herself up and pick up her lantern, stepping over to the rocky remnants that were left of the gargoyles, sifting through the contents and sighing heavily as she realised that there was absolutely nothing of value unless she was a rock collector..or someone looking for a real challenge in puzzles.
"Ugh, there's nothing here, Sev..uh, can I call you that? You..can call me Adell, if you want."
Adellia said softly. Dealing with people had never been one of her fortes. One of her major weaknesses, in fact. When it came to game-related matters such as combat or especially running away, she was normal as any other player. However, when it came to making friends..

Yeah. Adellia would've put all her stat and skillpoints into it if there was ever a skill named "Increased Confidence and Friend-making Proficiency."

Jo looked at the man and asked pretty much what he wanted to drink and was also really curious to why he had known her name. But she didnt worry she grabbed a mug and put it on the counter and filled it with a light ale and looked to him and said "here what's your name stranger? By the way it's on the house."
After handing the beverage to the man she wondered if he was here for business or pleasure, maybe he had heard of her other offer? Or maybe he was just new to town; well Jo didn't know but she thought that she needed to get some more supplies from town, forgetting the man was there for a second Jo thought to herself what to do.

Dax sees nothing he really wants to buy as he wanders about the market stalls. Having no money sucked. After this job though... he could make it on his own. Should he wait? Or go on his own and get all the money... but what if he didn't make it? He didn't know what happened when you died... did you really die? He was reluctant now and was warily wandering in circles around the stalls before stopping at stall selling what looked to be adventuring implements,"Hmm excuse me what have you got for an aspiring shield mage?"

Shima responds to the merchant with a small smile. After the last one she dealt with, a merchant with manners seems like a freakin' blessing!

"Greetings to you as well, humble merchant." she says with a small bow. "Yes, I need a few antidotes and possibly a couple of potions. Evidently my new assignment requires me to run into someone proficient in poisons and I'd rather have a counter for that." she says

Panting, Severine wrung her hands, one of which was slick with moisture as the glove of ice melted, the other dry and scratchy.

She never thought that an artificial world would be so tiring, but her heart was pounding and her limbs were already feeling sore from exhausting so much magic -- doubly so from where those Razor Rats had scratched her. As the last of her magic flickered out, she joined Mel on the ground, tired from having annihilated the gargoyles. Sniffing, she surveyed the rubble of the gargoyles. Even though the stonework creatures had been blown up in such a spectacular fashion, she was eerily aware that they had won just by the skin of their teeth. Chained down by their inferior levels, they had obviously burned up some of their beginner's luck to win. Yet, as her user interface gleamed before her eyes and the experience bar filled up like water poured into a glass, the aqua-haired mage felt an incredible satisfaction. At such a measly level, she (and Mel, too, she guessed) had nuked enemies that should have been impossible for them to kill. Perhaps Altera would be a good time after all. But either way, she was relieved to see herself making some progress at last. Level 2 was a noob's rank, but with this much XP rolling in, she'd strike level 5 before the end of the day. Absentmindedly, she glanced up to the looming mass of Arcanos Keep.

I better not get cheated out of the good stuff in there... she thought as she rubbed her incommodious hands.

A breath of mist supplied by Water Magic revitalized the dry skin from where she had wielded flame, while heating the air around her damp right hand with Fire Magic dried it to a tee. Seeing no more enemies around, she decided to let Mel rifle through the gargoyles' shattered remains as she caught her breath. That was a hard won encounter, but no doubt it'd get worse if they didn't level up ASAP to close the level gap. With the recommended level sitting at 5, Sev had it figured they'd have to nuke maybe... 3 to 5 more enemies to put themselves on the same level as whatever bullshit hid inside the Keep. Enemy magi, perhaps, and maybe more magical sentries like the gargoyles. The aqua-haired mage shivered but slightly with excitement. Who knew what kind of cool loot there would be inside, too? She'd collected some Razor Rat pelts from earlier and evidently the gargoyles had yielded nothing, but seriously: it was a wizard's tower, and wizards always had the best gear just sitting inside their enchanted closets, begging to be reaped. She looked down at her robe. It was an impressive robe, but certainly there'd be some better clothes inside the tower. Maybe a cool staff, too, or a fancy amulet. Anything would be welcome, really.

"Yeah, that's fine..." she replied idly to Mel -- or rather, Adell -- feeling content with that shorthand. This was Denieve's sister, after all, so she supposed it was tolerable if the Fae called her Emma. Eventually, she stood up and began to walk toward the enormous front doors of the Keep.

"Let's go inside. I want to see how far we can get." she said, pressing her hands against the large door. She then blinked with realization.

"Oh, right. Almost forgot to assign my skill point..." she mumbled, pulling up the user interface and hastily scrolling to the skills menu. For a Destruction Mage, it wasn't that hard to choose what to sink one's talent points into. Although she could have assigned it to a specific discipline of magic, her tactical side didn't think that it'd be wise to specialize without knowing the best applications for each... especially since she didn't know what was inside Arcanos Keep. Given this, she dropped it into Elemental Mastery, the Destruction Mage skill which empowered all Elemental Magic. That ought to give her a shiny bonus when casting any Elemental Magic.

That over and done with, she began to push open the doors to Arcanos Keep with all of her might... which wasn't much. The Razor Rats' wound was exhausting, but she wasn't perturbed knowing that all of her combat potential rested on her magic, not her ability to swing a sword.
