I'm ok with hardcore, I find roleplays less of collaboration story writing, more like playing the role of a character like a game. As in, it's funner when you can fail, die, be raped, and things happen to the character without the player's consent. It's the GM's job to make sure that the things happening to the character don't reduce the fun of playing the character, like if my character is originally a cute virgin, and she turns into a giant assed and breasted slut, it'll probably get boring and I'll have my character off herself. However, if she is a cute innocent pacifist, and turns into a scared, hardened badass (because she would of died if she didn't adapt) then the character is still fun to play, even with those scars. Probably because there is still the chance of her re-pacifying herself after things calm down, but the scars from her failures and her hardened past give her more character, thus making a better story.
But that's just my view on it.
