Arakuna grew up in a lazy village, where one major factory dominated the entire countryside. All male residents worked there, and all female residents either had a part-time job or lived a life of a housewife. The factory had been there for generations, and her family had tended the honorary position of floor manager for many years. Being the only child of her parents and finding herself in a time where female labour wasn't frowned apon, she aspired to take over the position from her dad one day, as his back was getting worse and worse.
Little did she know that that wasn't how it all turned out.
For one day her grandmother visited, on her twenty first birthday. Her grandmother, living on her own somewhere secluded from the village, had never before shown herself other then on Arakune's birthday after a little despute with arakune's grandfather. The old coot, known widely as being strange and subject of more then one gossip, looked at arakune's face only once and nodded. Without saying anything she delved into her pocket and took out an old amulet. “Do not ever wear this, for it holds ancient magic. Should you ever want to, look me up beforehand or a great curse will fall on your family” She told her, before leaving again.
Ever since that fateful day, Arakune found herself staring at the necklace lying on the windowsill, enjoying the way it reflected the light in a thousand colours upon her ceiling. She would dream about the ancient magic, what it was and what it would do, as well as how she'd look while wearing such a beautiful, golden necklace around her neck. One night she just couldn't take it anymore and grabbed the necklace, but right before she'd drape it around her neck she remembered her grandmother's words, “a great curse will fall on your family...”
Sighing, she put it back with reluctance, but she already made plans to sneak out in the night the next day, to break curfew and find her grandmother.
And so she did, she snuck out of her room and escaped her bedroom using her bedsheets. With necklace hidden in her backpack, she sneaked out of town and ran through the fields, towards the cabin in the woods her grandmother called home.
For some reason the old woman was already waiting for her, and invited her inside with a big grin. Once inside Arakune discovered that the shack of the old crazy lady was filled with spider webbings, but the old woman dismissed Arakune's remarks. “I've got a pet spider” She told her granddaughter, before wiping away some of the old webbings off the sofa. They both sat down, and there her grandmother urged the granddaughter to try the amulet. A little reluctant due to the curse but more then just a little curious, Arakune draped it around her neck, the beautiful black gemstone placed tightly between her cleavage and accentuating her curves well.
When she regained consciousness, the first thing she saw was her proudly smiling grandmother. She groaned and grabbed her head, confused about what happened. “You passed out, dear” Her grandmother replied the question that formed on Arakune's face, “It seems the ancient magics have responded well to your inner form”
Confused, Arakune asked about what she meant. The old lady just chuckled and left, leaving Arakune in what seemed like a hastily-built private bedroom. There was a single sink there, adorned with a small mirror, and after Arakune had splashed some water in her face to wake up, she got confronted by the woman in the mirror. She touched her cheek in disbelief, and gasped as her pinched cheek actually hurt her. That was her! That woman, at least four years older then her, with that serene high-society look about her, oh so different then her usual playful figure. She pinched herself again, but still the dream wouldn't end.
She spend the next couple of days in that bedroom, too confused and shaken to think about anything else then her new appearance. It took her six whole days to get accustomed, and on the seventh day she got reunited with her grandmother. She almost kicked in the door when she came in, her eagerness to check up on her granddaughter obvious in her delighted squeals.
At first Arakune was angry at the old woman, but slowly began to understand what the curse was her grandmother warned her about. Finding peace in this, she became to grow fond of the old coot. They both lived there for several months in peace, simply getting to know each other and making up for lost time, until her grandmother deemed her wise enough for one last secret to be revealed. She had told her about the amulet many times, but on one particular day she admitted that there was one final thing Arakune should know. Already having mastered the art of switching back and forth between her old self and her new, older version, arakune found herself intrigued and curious. “The medallion can alter your appearances, as you know” The old lady told her granddaughter, “But I have not yet told you the true reason why...”
Arakune was disturbed, confused and angry as she heard the tale of the Spider Queen, her great-great-great-grandmother. The spider queen, a noblewoman of high renown, once acted as a duchess around these parts, owning a great deal of land. Her secret, which she shared with Arakune apparently, was that she had the blood of a spider inside of her, giving her the appearance of a graceful lady while her leg section was replaced by the abdomen and legs of a giant spider. At first revolted, Arakune grew more and more conflicted between her emotions and her Grandmother told her the tale, about how the spider queen reigned her subjects with more love then most barons, the only one in the land actually caring about the farmers. She was, however, only a woman from the waist up, and as such was never seen outside her castle. The peasants were pleased with her at first, easily living the best lives anyone on these parts of the ocean, but the other land owners quickly grew jealous. They made up horrible rumours about the spider queen, and in the end even managed to get her loved subjects to revolt. Once they stormed the castle the secret was out- she was no human.
Arakune cried as the story continued, about how the spider queen was burned alive and staked a monster despite her love for her subjects. A glimmer of hope burned through her saddened visage as her grandmother told her about the spider queen's children, who were able to escape due to their mother's stallments, even though that eventually let to her painful death. Her children hid themselves and were about to take up arms if it wasn't for the eldest daughter of the spider queens spouse, who recalled her beloved mother's last words of forgiveness towards the peasants. And so it came to be, that instead of claiming revenge, the spider queen's spouse tried to learn from the peasants mistakes and, in the end, came up with the very medallion Arakune was wearing right now.
It was on that day that her grandmother showed Arakune the true magic hidden inside the amulet, namely simply removing the amulet and turning into a full-fledged, eight-legged 'spider centaur', and it was on that day Arakune found her true form- that of an arachne. It wasn't until that day that everything made sense-. Arakune's name, her fondness of the colour black, her seemingly never-ending visits of her small, eight-legged friends, her grandmother's dispute on her birthday, the old woman's seclusion and the rumours about her. The webbings in her house... You can only imagine how heart-broken the poor girl was when just the day after sharing the great secret she came to pass, old age finally coming to claim the old woman. Arakune weeped for days, and gave her beloved grandmother a spider's funeral- wrapped in warm webbings woven by a loved one, instead of being shoved in a cold wooden box.
And that is the true tale of Arakune the hermit. The rumors about her fleeing her old life and going abroad to find herself a wealthy husband are all lies, as are the rumors that she couldn't take it any more and ended her life. Her friends wiped about the disappearance of her friend, and her parents were more then just devisated- but never again did Arakune visit her hometown, for nobody knew her secret- and just like her grandmother, she just couldn't bear to live while wearing a constant mask.
One downside of being a hermit, however, is being unable to find a nice partner. Before her grandmother passed, she told Arakune that as 'spider queen' descendants, they were the 'female' half of an ancient spider tribe. Though able to mate with most males in human form, they were unable to copulate with any other spiders unless a very rare, 'male spider' could be found. these male spiders once predominated the spider tribe, but as tensions arose with the humans many were killed in war, only to be ultimately separated with the 'female' half. Her grandmother told Arakune that, should she find a suitable male spider, she would be able to start a new spider tribe and relive the glorious days of old. Her grandmother had sought for a male partner most her life, as do almost all female spiders, but couldn't find any. Arakune then asked how her grandmother knew what to look for, upon which she tore out a specific page in her old, dusty diary. The page she handed to Arakune, featuring gibberish in some uknown language on the right and sported a big drawn picture of a male spider on the left. At first disgusted by its seemingly appalling verocious appearance, Arakune soon grew rather attached to the picture, even up to the point of eagerness to find her own mate. On the back of the page, Arakune found a similarly drawn picture of a rather different spider, along with the hastily scribbled words "Find a king and become the queen"
