I haven't posted a fun fact for a while, and I got kind of backlogged.

Did you know that if you put a material with inductance into a changing magnetic field, it opposes the change of magnetic field? It's possible (in certain special cases) to levitate inductive materials this way, and it's possible to fire inductors like bullets if you switch the field fast enough.

You certainly could make a maglev train, but there are multiple issues: stray inductance would put mechanical strain on the setup, limiting the capability of the system, all consumer electronics would be negatively affected (a high frequency changing magnetic field combined with a high frequency A/C field is also known as an EMP), and stray inductance in people would cause discomfort (all metals are inductive by nature). As well, magnetic hysteresis in surrounding materials would cause a large loss of energy.

So, is that saying we could technically use this technology (with some tinkering here and there) to create a real-life railgun? If so, kick-ass! :D

Also, here's a fun fact for Star Wars fans:

The pieces for exhaust ports on the original trilogy Star Destroyer models (the ones used for in-film space scenes, that is) are made out of those plastic easter egg shells you find candy in. More specifically, they were a special kind of those which were used in packaging for "L'eggs" stockings. Amazing what some gimmicky packaging and creativity can come up with, eh? :P

Actually, you can already make a railgun, but it's not convenient. With this technology, you can make a compact rifle fired only with electricity.

Railguns use a ton of power, and they become unusable quite quickly. Here's a picture of a Navy railgun firing.

Edit: By the way, that huge fiery plume in the back is not a fiery explosion, it's the plasma made by the projectile as it flies through air.

...well, progress is progress. Perhaps someday we'll find a way to make such technology far more feasible. Until then...thank God for science-fiction!

fun fact:I enjoy this thread. But here is a more interesting fact for the masses.
-The highest point in Pennsylvania is lower than the lowest point in Colorado.
-Highest point in Pennsylvania is Mt. Davis at around 3200 ft.
-Lowest Point in Colorado is the Arikaree River at just over 3300 ft.

I've just discovered something cool!

As you probably know, planets in our solar system move around fairly quickly, and their gravity is strong. What you might not know is that a space ship can take advantage of those two facts to accelerate itself. The cool thing, though, is that a spaceship can use its boost from one planet to propel it to the next, essentially making interplanetary travel use no fuel. The path to take from planet to planet varies greatly depending on their relative positions and velocities, but even if it's not possible to get to Neptune without using fuel, for example, it's always possible to radically reduce the fuel used in transit by following certain paths through the gravity wells of planets. This path is called the Interplanetary Transport Network, and it's really cool.

This would mean that extra-terrestrial probes could move from planet to planet constantly without using much fuel, and that extra-terrestrial colonies could visit different planets freely.

Then let me help bring it back up...

On the subject of space travel, what you mentioned is pretty cool. Though, NASA will need to get that whole "sperm disabled in zero-G" thing sorted out first...

I wouldn't completely trust that information considering how it came from wikipedia
