If you're talking about the ordinary tentacle beasts that don't have that particular attack and suggesting that their harmless asses somehow managed to give you trouble while the gazers didn't, then "I dunno lol. " Different parties might have different balances or something.
In regards to the scripted battle, no. I've noticed that after you hit them down to a specific amount of HP, it no longer drops, so as to ensure that you CANNOT win the battle. As it stands, I could sit in that battle for several hundred turns provided I used the correct strategy, but no. There's absolutely no way to kill the first tentacle creature, nor is it possible to damage the others after you've damaged them to a point. If you could kill them, albeit, with much difficulty... I would have done it already to save the time and trouble of having to go back to the Fortress.
As for tentacle beasts VS Gazers; Gazers allowed me to run rather frequently, and even when they didn't, i was able to take them out in a few hits.
In opposition to that, the tentacle beasts made it extremely hard to run and their abundance by comparison was insane. Also, the necessity in which they are to be fought; not only just for an H-Scene, but because they need to be killed, otherwise you'll just end up getting stuck in battle after battle with no real substantial gain... not that you really gain much from them anyway. Still, the morale is always nice if you do beat countless hundreds of tentacle beasts.
