While you do need Flash Creative Pro to make Flash games, there's a few alternatives I've either tried or am aware of (So your milage may vary.) but Synfig, Ktoon and Pencil are possible alternatives, while I know Pencil is just an animated suit with no game functionality, but still you could make a slide show. ^_^; Just google "Opensouce alternatives to Flash" and presto. Also I'd like to point out, that animating things takes a lot of time to do, so patience is required.

I'm having a few problems; Learning to program/code as well as issues from using the software, but I'm hoping to have a basic walking cycle before the year is over. (I blame Society my lack of free time.)

Well, I started with gamemaker 8; it's not a flash program, but it can teach you the basics of making games, and eventually some scripting.

Flash CS5.5 has a 30 day trial you can download from Adobe's website if you want to just mess around for a bit. For a more permanent solution, you would need to buy it or find an altARRRRRnative, matey.
