“Milady… My lady… mai laidiej~” Lilith said slowly, tasting the word. It struck Heidi that the woman had a strange, slow accent and her pronunciation was perfect. She also spoke very softly, faintly; as if she had grown unaccustomed to hearing and speaking words. “A title often used, but only by people that can put a certain claim on the referred person… You, my dear… I am not your lady. Yet. Come closer, into the light. Dear Minerva has told me much about you. Said that she had told you a slight bit of our ways, about our current situation and about our dreams of the future. Also mentioned you were kind, cooperative and very willing to help even though your expertise lie somewhere else. You’ve got a good heart and a sound mind I believe. Especially the latter is a trait I find quite important in your behavior…”
She snapped a leaf the tiniest bit, carefully, and slowly a small end of a leaf whirled to the ground. “I shall not trouble you with my history, nor with the history of the Ravenaireans. I shall leave that task to Minerva, who has taken quite a liking to you. Rather, I would like to spend some time with you in a way you would see more fitting; I enjoy talking, but I find it tiresome at the same time. Is there anything in particular you would like to ask, child, before we ‘get down to business’, as the saying goes…?”
As Cassie looked around, she saw only two other guards; a plain human, but with a strange look in her eyes and a guy who kept his hands tucked away in a bucket of water. Both of them were sitting on plain wooden chairs at a plain wooden table, with only two tankards with what smelled like ale. A small fireplace and a couple sets of weapons and armor was all that made up the room. There were two doors, one leading to what smelled like the supply room and through the other she could see a couple of beds. Small place, even more minimalistic then the Lynx’s. The woman smiled as Cassie entered, while the guy with the bucket appeared to be snoring lightly with his chin resting on his chest. “Shhh~” The girl whispered, “He’s had a long day. Hello missy, can I help you…?”
“This is our newest recruit” The lynx muttered in reply, walking in after Cassie and closing the door behind him. “Cassie, Fade; Fade, Cassie. Cassie will serve as our expeditionary force, as well as a second pair of hands should we need ‘em. She’s a part-timer though, and will probably mix guarding and bounty hunting on occasion. Fade here is our prime detective, and handles all homicides and other crimes inside the town.”
The woman continued to smile at Cassie, and nodded her head. “Nice to meet you, Cass –I can say Cass, right?”
As zombie looked at the slimes he first thought they were just that; slimes. But as he gave them a second glance, he noticed there was something familiar about them. The it hit him. But of course, they were looking exactly like the transparent, green versions of the girls he had met back in the cave! Who were they again? Heidi, and… Someone else. Odd, how those slimes managed to copy their exact appearances… or… wait, what was going on? How could they ever…?
Due sighed as he was ignored, and walked outside again. No response, but still he found a place he could come back to should the residents wake up. Marking the spot in the back of his head he walked onwards, trailing along the goatpath to the foot of the hill. Then, the path fanned out. Seven paths to choose from, all leading to different areas. Now what?
Mizuki managed to let go of the root with one hand and grab hold of a rock with her free hand. Next she drove her toes into the wall and a second later she was hanging to the cliff like a spider. A scared spider, but still. She called out for help, but didn’t wait long enough for a reply to get back. She started climbing and made slow progress, until suddenly she heard an echo of her own voice. “Hello is there anybody where?”
She blinked and paused for a second, but then suddenly a face emerged above the edge. A grinning face, female and with a little bird-like twitch in her neck. “Can I help you? Should I help you? Will I help you?” The girl asked playfully, looking down at Mizuki without a care in the world.
Claire jumps up and called at the man that appeared, but he was already on his way out. He didn't seem to hear her, and kept on walking following the goat path down. Claire could go after him and see who he was or, now that she noticed him, see who the other strange man was that had curled up around a big leather bag in the corner.
Breathe easy, the doctors are about to arrive.
