Again my last post has not been aprooved yet, but still...
Thanks again for the comments, hints and suggestions.

Thanks to you i figured out why that thing was so offset, it was messed up on 2 different depths, deep inside that movieclip :P

(I think i missed that post earlier) FAIRIES FAIRIES FAIRIES!!!:
Already planned in, but still a nice and inspiring post :3

Different locations then the "Mario World":
Ok, to give you guys a little bit of story that i have planned...
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Mario is on a vacation and recieves the letter from Peach, that there is trouble all over the Mushroom Kingdom.
Of course Mario does what Peach asks of him, and there goes his well earned visit at the Isle Delfino strip club hotel.
For reasons that will be totaly awesome when i think of them, (and just like in the best Mario game ever) Mario is NOT just going after Bowser and Peach.
I think most ppl already know after wich Mario game i am making this.
The first World will be (almost) pure Mario, but not only original Mario characters.
And after that first world, depending on what you think, Mario could end up anywhere...

_root.getNextHighestDepth()
Yea, thanks, i already found that and build it into some places, its awseome,
i even modified it to set a variable (nowHeight) so i can access them all with _root["Mushroom"+nowHeight]._x and ._y
Its so awesome that this garbage of a code works :P

Good and Evil:
I tought about that too, but i am not too sure about how long my game will be,
and if ppl want to beat it 2 times or even more often, to see the different good and bad actions...

3 in a row Minigame
I also tought of that already, and part of it is already made, not the game itself, but the surroundings...
I will make a minigame like this, but i dont think it will simply be rotating pictures that you have to stop.
Without spoilering much more then my warnings do, i can already tell you that those minigames are NOT
brought to you by the happy little Toads. They will need warnings :3

Right now i am still trying around with the creation of movieclips and a gimick you can already see a part of in the alpha, wich i dont want to spoiler too much.
Maybe someone figures out before i do the next version :P
If you played Bowser's Castle, you know that this is new, and THIS is why i need the dynamic movieclips so bad XD
Check out my unfinished game, Bowser's World: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2583.

Wow, i didn't realize its already over a weak since i posted last time. I tought it was just a few days ago...
Edit: or maybe it WAS just a few days, if i look at the post date, and not at my join date... why is that even there? :P
Well, anyways i didn't have too much time to do anything, but i got some work done on the game.
Expect for having not unlmited time, and a still kinda slow CS,
my biggest problem atm is realy that i have no idea wich of my 1 million ideas i should do. :(

Besides that, i finished some work on a nice little system i will reveal then i think you would need it in the alpha,
OR when someone figures out you can do something "special" (something you cant do in the original) in the first alpha :3
This is where most of my work went, and i think its kinda awesome :P
When you find out what it is you will be all like "omg, thats it?" at first XD

I also got some tiny animations done, wich work much faster and awesome then i expected.
But if i dont restart CS before i work on that, its hell, and everything takes years,
also i have to restart that crap like every 15 min because its getting slower again...

I hope i can decide what i want to do first soon, and then be able to show you guys something new.
I'm thinking of making one actual level and one puzzle/minigame thing, so i can get some feedback what you
enjoy about it, and what not.

Lol no problem man. Take your time, I'm sure nobody won't mind how long it takes (as long as there are signs of life...)

Though I still don't know what you mean with "special" (can't think of anything the original didn't have aside from the coins and star thingies that drops from goombas; then again, can't remember the original at all lol.), guess I have to wait and see then.

A suggestion, work first with the puzzle/ minigame rather than the actual stage first. I think it's easier to pull off (considering if it small and/or fast), and it'll give you some time to breath for the next update :D .

Keep up the good work!

Hey everyone.

First of all, i am sorry for not delivering the promised porn, but Flash just keeps driving me crazy.

Every problem i had until now, had a logical solution or whatever, but this time its just nonsense...
I am using this VCam that playshapes programmed, and usually it works perfectly fine.
But now, its just going MAD!
I will upload an example, where you can look at this crap.
There are 2 used frames in this. Frame 3 and 11.
In frame 3, everything works perfect i think. But when you get to frame 11... Shit hits the fan...
Please, if you are able to, download my example. Playtest it (just go into the pipe to your left) and see if you can move freely in frame 11.
You should be able to. After that go to the 11th frame, and change the instance name of the Cam, from VCam2 (wich means nothing) to VCam.
Playtest again, go into the pipe, and please tell me what the HELL IS GOING ON???
What happens on my screen, i assume, is that the VCam suddenly gets very small, and shows you just 1 pixel. because your screen will flicker in the colors, that are around mario.
If you renamed it, and you can still walk around in frame 11... well, whatever happens when you try it, please please tell me, i just dont get it.
Even in this example, with 99% of the game deleted, it still just goes /RetardMode...
There is a tiny bit of code, refering to VCam in that frame, BUT if i call the Cam VCam2, and change the code to VCam2 too, it still works. So this code doent fuck it up...

What else i noticed... The cams in frame 3 and 11 are EXACTLY the same... now put your finger on mario, and jump a little in frame 3. See how mario always ends up under your finger?
Hold your finger there, and go through the pipe.... WHY THE HELL IS HE DOWN THERE??? The camera is fixed on the EXACT SAME POINT as in the other frame.
And it even gets weirder. Yesterday, at some point, i changed the code that tells the cam where it should look at, so mario is in the middle again. Worked fine. I just put a -1 at the end, and the position was PERFECT. Well, if i change ANYTHING in that code NOW, it doesnt work anymore, and you know whats even funnier? If you change the code back to what it was before, you remove the -1 again... it still doesnt work... you have to RESTART THE PROGRAM before it works again... :MadSuperSayan:

Well, i hope you could get a little glimpse of the madness i am suffering from, and maybe someone can provide the magical solution for this problem.
I tried around for HOURS with this, and i could not get it to work like i wanted. The only conditions that i have for that are that the instance name is VCam, and that Mario is in the middle of the cam, like in frame 3... I mean, come on flash... it works perfectly in like 10 frames in the non example project, why not in this frame???
God, i bet i will feel so stupid when someone tells me the answer...

But besides that, the engine is almost working perfectly.
You cant see anything in the example, but basically the whole "transportation" system is working now, with only 3 objects (GlobalFadeout, LocalFadeout and Fadein),
and it works perfect. Short: Code for transition is super easy now, you basically just need to say "Do a globalFadeout to frame 11" and it works :3
I tried to improve the hitboxes a little. And what i felt, what totally missed before... Mario's auto jump when you hit an enemy. Done :P
I added some more enemys, but just basic, not too fancy, Mario stuff.

I hoped i could do 2 small levels before i show how stuff looks like, but if the Cam keeps melting my brain for the next few days... i dont know...
Like i said, i am very thankfull to anyone who could help solving this problem, and i hope i can show you some nice gamplay and porn... SoooOOoooOOOOoooN..... :D

Woot! I loved New Bowser's Castle; I thought it had the most potential out of all of the things Playshapes posted.

One warning: I'm not here to play a Mario game. My computer's not powerful enough and the engine isn't good enough to have smooth and fluent Mario mechanics, so it won't be the same quality as the original. Avoid making it use a lot of mechanics and designs from the original Mario games, as that will make me feel silly. Why would I play Mario, but worse?

That being said, putting goombas in, putting coins in, and putting platforms in is a great thing, but you want to avoid long linear levels, challenging parts, and sections with none pronz.

Thanks for listening, and I hope your project goes smoothly!

Re: Bowser's World (Warnings? Yes! All of them!)

Postby BulmaSSJ4 » Fri Aug 31, 2012 4:12 am

Such a simple question, and so much to say about it... :P

Why should someone play a Mario game, that is "worse"?

First of all, why do people play H-Games, even tough they are just a ripoff of other games, most of the time?
Just for the content? No, you could get that on Google.
So why do we like those games? I think there is a lot behind that.

Then...Worse then what? An actual Mario game? Any Mario game?
Why DO people play Mario games that are worse then the latest ones?
MANY people still love the games, that are the inspiration to Bowser's World, wich are Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World.
Just search for a lets play on youtube, there are MILLIONS!

And for the last... I know my game will be not as good and smooth as their inspirations, but still,
many of thise "rip offs" turned out to be enjoyable games.
And i am pretty sure that this game will be more fun, in ANY way, then SOME Mario games ^^

So much for that question... :P

Besides that, of course i am trying to make the game use few ressources, and it is looking pretty good so far.
That is one of the biggest issues, why everything takes so long.
I am trying to keep everything as dynamic and... well, compatible as possible.
Besides saving cpu, (wich is basically the only thing flash uses...) this also keeps the Library / Game size small.

Since my flash still turns into slow mode after some time, i am sometimes to lazy to move Mario in the editor, and just run there ingame...
At one point, i noticed something... It gives me nothing, i am invincible, but still i collect every coin, kill every goomba and evade deadly stuff,
whenever i see it... Of course it has something to do that this is something i am making myself, but... i already like it. XD

Someone once told me something about "feeling something, when you do something in a game". And this is not about "feelings" in this way.
What he meant was, that you get a little feedback from a game, may it be a coin sound, a jump sound,
your char jumping back up when you jump on an enemy, stuff like that.
This makes games feel... alive.

Ah, sorry. My comment was mean and not to the point I was trying to make. I love playing games that take old ideas and do new and interesting things with them. What I don't want is to play a Mario clone that is "worse". If you put World 1-1 into your game with no changes except for poorer hitboxes, worse mechanics, and slower gameplay, then I'd complain! There's no reason to copy something without being innovative. That's the point I was trying to make, so I'm sorry for sounding like "I won't play your game because it's based on something".

@Asian
I am not sure if i get what you are saying, if your sentences belong together...
No matter if virus page or not, there is no progress other then the first alpha, that you can see.
If you are just saying "i saw the first alpha, and wish i could see more", well, thanks :3
And... what kind of virus warning do you get? Is it this stupid Firefox page? If yes, google how to turn that off.
Firefox page protection SUCKS. Just click on the "Why is this site dangerous?" Button, and it tells you clearly that the site is NOT dangerous...
If its another virus warning, tell us where you are getting it, and what it says. I have so much protection, except the firefox thing, and never had any warning here...

@Kenpachi :P (If i remember that face wrong... hit me)
You didnt sound mean at all, i tought its an interresting question why we play those games.
I already dont remember all the stuff i said, but if i sounded like, i would remake old levels,
this is totaly not what i am doing.
For example, what you can see in the first Alpha, the area there is based on something from a Mario game,
but i am pretty sure that this has not been in any Mario game in this way, and if i didnt say it in some old post,
(dont know if i did say that) i bet nobody gets what it is based on yet ^^
Maybe, in the second Alpha, when there is some Music playing, the people that played lots of old Mario games, know what it is :P

Postby BulmaSSJ4 » Sun Sep 02, 2012 12:12 pm

Well, i got rid of the Camera problem, but not realy how i wanted it.
Now i got some of this ugly code i never wanted. Like... "Cam1= Cam2= Cam3= Cam4=..."
And i still have no idea why flash totaly glitches out if i use the Cam on 2 different Frames, with 2 times the same name.
I guess there is some global variable conflict inside that huge code, that i am too lazy to search :P

Another problem that hit me suddeny... some of my work was just gone. Not realy much, but still...
First of all its annoying to do that code again, because its just copy paste, and changing objects in the menu.
And second... HOW THE HELL DID THAT HAPPEN?
It must have happened while i imported some stuff from the original new boswers caste, wich i deleted earlier,
but i always chose "dont replace items" AND there was even 1 item that disappeard, wich had NOTHING to do with bodies (wich was what i was importing).
It was a frame, inside a frame, inside an enemy, that is the enemy's "death animation" and the code that triggered that stuff...
From what i can clearly see (dont know if more stuff happened) all legs and feet are gone... there are just markers left, that point to an empty object.
Flash can be so freaking weird...
I pretty much know what i am doing, i am not a complete idiot, but boy... flash sure makes me feel like one XD

The enviroment for the first 2 levels is done. And everything i programmed for that stuff earlier, seems to work perfectly.
As you could guess from the text above, some new enemys are done... some more then 1 time... :P

Besides all this i wanna thank you guys again for everything, if it was ideas, compliments, or criticism.
Getting a confirmation about what you think that people like and dont like, is a great help and motivation in doing this.
And again i want to say, if you have any ideas about anything, please share them.
I have lots and lots of ideas of my own, but if you have that many ideas, you sometimes need a reason to go into a certain direction,
and people liking or disliking things, is a good reason.

Well whenever I click on this thread I get sent to this Panda Security shit that says there is a virus on the page I want to go to. So i clicked "Yes I would like to Continue" and then i get sent to another page saying this thread does not exist lol. So the only way I can actually see this page is on my phone. It probably is firefox, idk.

You know that upside-down pipe that Mario comes out of when the game begins, it's perspective is backwards.

Not anymore :P

At first i didnt even get what you meant, but then i realized that the perspective is totaly fucked up XD
I did NOT realize that until you said it. I dont see that pipe that often :P

Now i redid the pipes, so that pipes at the top and left, look different.
And.. wow... Playshapes drawings are kinda awesome, but sooooo hard to edit,
because EVERYTHING is drawn with fillings, and NO lines. So, if you want to edit a "line"
he drew, its pretty hard to only select that stroke, and not EVERYTHING that has this color...
Took me like 20 min to do it, because i had to redo and copy paste sooo much ^^

Thanks for pointing that out.
Like i said before, perspective is NOT my best friend,
and i am very glad when people point out mistakes like that.

Fantastic work. My only qualm is that when jumping up the first set of blocks, the top row of them can cut your jump short with a head collision. It's a small design flaw, but easily fixed. Just put a little more vertical space between blocks.

You guys are realy extremely lazy...
Well, i just work on other stuff until i get some more responses.

Anyways, thanks for that "bug report".
Most of the vertical parts need some more work,
i consider them bugged, and know that i have to re arranges most stuff, and make the... block distances / jump distances into some kind of norm...
Like in real mario games, you always had to jump either 1,2,3 or 4 squares, never something in between, if you get what i mean :P

Not sure if it's a bug of some sort or not, but pressing either Enter or Space makes the game unplayable and I have to close the game down and reopen it.
I thought Space was jump at first, due to playing other games here with that control style. Enter usually leads to a menu, which I thought there might have been.

As for the Alpha version itself, it seems to be going well.
Can you interact with anything in the game, or is that yet to be added?
I got to the point were I had fallen down an Ace of Spades, which took me to what reminded me of the games-mushroom from SMB3.
I couldn't get out so I had to close down the player and reopen it. I'll k
eep going about the game and let you know if I notice anything else that may be of use.
