Lady and the Orcs: action/platformer game

Postby Palace_Athene » Fri Jul 13, 2012 11:01 am

Hello all, long time lurker here.

I've looking at all the amazing games and their progressions for quite a long time, and I thought it was time to give something back. Primarily I'm more an artist than a programmer, but I've been looking through a ton of AS3 tutorials and documentation and hopefully it won't be too hard to learn.

So what I've had in mind to make is an action platformer with some rpg elements thrown into the mix, the story will follow the main character's (name pending) quest to defeat the demon lord.

I've yet to work out all of the details since this idea popped up last night, but I will be making a detailed documentation on how I want this all to work.

Below is a quick screencap of the main character, I will be going for a semi-realistic approach but that may change.

I am pretty new to flash, so any tips and help will be greatly appreciated.

Update.

I changed the player model from the original. The model isn't complete yet as there are some more details I'll have to add in, I just wanted to get basic animations done and out of the way.

Created the idle, walk and jump animations (the jump animation is just one single frame for the time being).

Update:

-Added movement controls to the player character(A/D to move and W to jump).
-Added a vcam(note that the vcam is centered on the players feet, still trying to figure out how to fix that).

Been learning quite a lot over these past few days. I hope to fix the camera and the slight floating of the character as soon as I can figure out why it does that.

Enjoy this.

Her front upper arm doesn't look right. It looks like it has been twisted in an odd way.
That may just be me though.

Well, what do we have here? This is some nice own-style quality work you've done! It looks really nice, but maybe the girl has too much of a six pack? Her arm is a bit weird, just because it seems it has been twisted in a rather akward way, or maybe I simply couldn't find it's angle. If you want a hint about flash-making, you can make the character have like three different sections in her hips; this way you can make her do different jumping and running positions, without making her look weird. It is quite a tedious task (at least for me) to make a character have those many sections and then animate it frame by frame, but if it works out, it will look awesome. Keep up the work, it's great!

That may be the way I draw, I tend to draw characters by first using simple shapes and stuff to block out them out, then draw out their muscles and how they would appear. What you see as the looking like its been twisted are just the muscle lines and definitions. :)

IMO the head seems too small wheras the legs are too wide, other than that, your art style is promising and YAY! for a new game in development

The artstyle is cool, but like Schramm said, the head seems way too small. I don't think the legs are too wide, but the hips definitely are, and the lower body as a whole feels... kinda bloated? It's a lot bigger than it should be in comparison to the upper body. Darthan's comment about the twisted arm is also something you might wanna look into. Other than those minor issues, the model looks cool.

What kind of orc will we see? The classic green one, the darker LotR ones or something exotic, like the Might and Magic II boar-people orcs? (The last one would be awesome :D )

Yes, looks quite promising. Looking forward to further updates!

Can you share any details of the game with us? Gameplay features, type of combat, stages, type of H-content and how it's delivered; that sort of thing?

I'm in the process of designing the orcs. I'll post some designs when I'm done (there will be other types of enemies as well).

I like the lines, but I think your proportions are off. Head looks too small, thighs too wide, lower chest too big/upper chest too small. It's all well done, but together it doesn't look right.

I found looking at posemaniacs helped me a bit. It's not a guide to anything, just a bunch of poses. But it's the best reference I have. Hope it helps.

Looks fine to me, honestly. Sure, the head is a bit small technically, but if she's meant to have a large physique then it makes perfect sense

Funnily enough, I did use posemaniacs for the anatomy. I was going for a semi realistic look. Or maybe that's just the way I draw...

I've whipped up a quick sketch of an Orc enemy (complete with idle animation). Bear in mind its not the final look. ;)
Still haven't figured out a way to fix the camera though....

Impressive so far. Like you, I too am more of an artist than a programmer. Hope to see this get further developed.

Sorry to say this so bluntly but:

- her lower legs look absolutely horrid because they are too short compared to the rest
- her lower body looks too much like that of a bodybuilder (bulky), which IMO doesn't fit with "Lady" in the title
- head and neck proportion with the rest of the body is wrong, they are too small

I do like the model face though so keep working on it :)

Let's hope the Orcs won't be the only enemies or it might get boring quickly.
