Programmer looking to help.

Postby LaconicWolf » Mon Nov 15, 2010 8:09 am

Hi, I'm not sure how much the team is in need of other programmers right now but I figure I could at least offer my assistance. I found this project a few weeks ago after looking at Playshapes' other flashes, and after playing around with version 0.2 and checking out some of Renara's posts, I felt that this could be a good learning experience as well as a nice diversion from my schoolwork (like I need any others  ). I'm a 3rd year computer engineering student and have most of my programming experience in c++ and java but picked up Flash and AS3 about 6 months ago. If you need to see examples of my work in Flash, I have a couple of rudimentary and mostly incomplete flash games for which I'd be happy to provide the source code. :)

I dont think the team would just pick you up since you have experience, most likely they need some examples of your work.

I dunno bout the team's status and needing people, but there are a number of fan projects jumping around that you can probably help out — if they also catch your interest.

Idd say post those projects you've been working on so that it is possible for us to see your artstyle and how good you are and how the others can further help you.

Yeah I was about to suggest helping out with the fan projects. There are at least 2 huge projects undergoing slow production so maybe you can help speed it up.

Post in the Samus Platformer thread or the Greed is Good thread. Those are the 2 projects you should try for.

Regardless of weather or not we need help in the programming department (we do) Ren doesn't want anyone else on board yet till he's finished the main engine script writing for the game.

Does he not have any way to parallelize his work flow or is he just adamant about completing the the engine by himself?

As to the other other projects, if the LoK crew can't use me just yet then I yeah I guess I'll take a look at the other groups and see about joining them.

Personally, I'm glad to have you here, dude, a lot of stuff here could use a couple of extra hands to help speed it up, but I agree, some samples of your work would be nice.

Well, there's only one thing that I'd really be able to show off, but it's not particularly user friendly at the moment. It's pretty much just a prototype with no real graphics or animations to speak of (the "characters" are just cardboard cutouts), and the interface is very minimalist. I think I'll post it in a couple of days once I've gotten it in a more usable state. Unfortunately most of the work I've done is under the hood so even when I do post it, it may not seem too impressive.

Think the best way to get yourself recognised and a dedicated member of the team whilst Renara continues to work on the engine/G(UI) would be to follow in the same steps the others (corta, dirtyc101 etc.) and try your attempt at some LoK based spin-off with your own ideas. It's an excellent way to demonstrate your flash, artistic and creative skills. Also gives people like me something additional to look at! :D

really i think things are more based on how good it looks and moves {and sometimes how realistic it flows}. if you got something that has both traits then i implore you to post it.
