LoK Site Exclusive Pre-loaders (Need help!)

Postby Nex » Fri Mar 18, 2011 9:08 pm

I think the idea of a site exclusive preloader is AWESOME, but I don't know anything about programming with Actionscript (yet). Hopefully, with some help from contributors, we can make a Site Preloader, or even easy to manipulate multiple variations of a preloader, so each contributor can have a unique, but unifying intro to their Flashy Goodness.

For now, I use a generic Newgrounds preloader, and I'm going to start fiddling with the code to see if I cant make it look a little more... H-ish.

Any and all help is appreciated!!!

Ok, done with my first test. When I tried exporting it using flash, my computer made sure to load the entire file before even allowing me to view it, which means I don't know whether the loading bar works or not.

I removed the NG Tank and logo, and replaced it with an Arwing and the LoK Logo. I also went into AS3 and replaced all the "NGbutton" events with "loklogo", as well as changing the destination of the Hyperlink to "legendofkrystal.com".

I changed the colors of the loading bar and play button to match the theme as well.

The only thing I couldn't figure out: When your mouse rolls over the Tank logo, the mouse turns into a finger pointer, indicating a Hyperlink. After switching all the AS3 codes, the Tank still made my mouse turn into a finger, but the LoK Hyperlink did not. I don't know how to fix this, and if someone could help me out or give me a heads up, it would be much appreciated.

In order to test the Loading bar, I inserted the biggest fucking file I could find on my computer into the timeline: a twenty minute orchestral song from the Anime "Now and Then, Here and There". I had to lower the FPS to 1 just to keep the frame number from exceeding 30,000 frames! Listen to it if you want, but it's only there for testing purposes.

A "Preloader" is the part of a Flash at the very beginning of the video, where a "LOADING" sign appears. When the entire video is loaded, a "PLAY" button appears.

Basically, it helps keep the flash from crashing by loading the entire flash before playing it, and has a bar telling the person watching how long until the video loads.

A couple examples would be:
-Peach sitting in the Tank at the loading screen of Mario is Missing
-The Newgrounds Tank logo on my flashes
-The loading bar on the Legend of Krystal v.02 file

If you make some part of flash as button - mouse will change on some thing like hand when it is on that element.

To remove that effect try to make that element (and all that it consists inside) to movie clip.

You can make mouse invisible and make your own mouse picture that will go for mouse using : drag and drop for example and command Mouse.hide(); Or on hit action for example.

Some sample of that kind of loader on AS3 may be for example - i use it on my test web site:

I did not use any buttons - make all self-acting.

So... if I turn the Legend of Krystal Logo into a Flash Button, it will turn into a finger? That makes sense, I made it a movie clip... OK! Thanks! I'll try it!

Alright, I updated the preloader. The LoK link is a button now, and turns into a finger. Switched the background from white to black.

It's still a pretty basic preloader. Does anyone have suggestions on what to add next?

This sounds like a great idea, might also be a good idea to have a disclaimer somewhere in the game that says something like

"This flash was only made for the Legend of Krystal Forums (http://legendofkrystal.com/). If it is uploaded anywhere else such as the funny games site, then it is stolen and the person responsible for stealing it is a whore and will be stoned to death after being lit on fire and stuffed into a gasoline filled trashcan and then finally kicked in said trashcan down a hill into a pack of hungry bears. This flash is incomplete and has little or no affiliation to the LoK project as this is made by random community member(s) of LoK. If you have comments, questions, or concerns, please feel free to visit our site to upload your own material or just lurk. That's cool too....I guess."

But that's just me.

If funny-games.biz hadn't stole the other LoK game, I wouldn't be here helping out on this new one. It's a nice idea but you must weigh the positive of not letting others use our content for their own hit generating websites with .. less distribution and less eyeballs seeing something which could have a positive effect in other ways. SUCH AS:

Everyone who views the credits could also be presented to a link to a legitimate and well-known charity (like the Red Cross.)
Everyone who plays the game could be presented with a link to this website, and more people who get interested in the game could mean more people (out of the many many that come here) that might actually have an inclination to participate in making the next version. Because, hint hint, this is my last time around.

Yea I actually owe them for bringing me here too after they put up playshapes' games but they don't exactly credit people very well, especially when they go and remove the hyperlinks to the site it belongs to. The least they could do is put a link to the site in their description when they use a game, I'm pretty sure 80% of the people on there don't have a clue about this site or what LoK stands for which does kinda the opposite of publicizing. I mean the disclaimer wouldn't be as dramatic as that about it being stolen but anyway enough of that. How's this sound?

that would be nice because i definetly didn't know anything about this web site until i looked up playshapes profile on newgrounds
Renegade, Mercenary, Wielder of the Shaft of Justice, Angel-Rapist, Rp Contract Killer
He enters like a shadow, exits like a Horseman of the Apocalypse.

Okay, here's the FLA, as requested. I didn't post it at first because the file size was friggin' huge. Then I remembered I had a twenty minute song attached to it. *Facepalm*

This is a basic preloader, so any disclaimer additions you want to make, you'll have to do yourself. Don't have time to update any of my current projects (please don't be mad!).

Basically, just copy and paste everything in the first frame into the first frame of whatever flash movie you're making. It is a CS5 file, sorry for you CS4 users, I'll put up a back-compatible version later tonight.

This might make a good addition to the Samus Platformer project as well. I have a feeling its going to be getting large, fast.
