Game Modes?

Postby KIX9 » Fri Dec 23, 2011 8:14 am

Iv'e been thinking, A lot of people can get turned off by games like these if the type of game they are playing isn't what they were looking for. Even if the mods are only unlock-able, I think the game might be even better and more attractive to others if we had things like sandbox, survival, normal, hard, and so on. Any ideas? :)

Well, one of Playshapes' aims with LoK was to build everything in a re-usable way, and the creative corner has been a testament to that as people have created all kinds of fun games and animations using the same pieces, or style of pieces, to build their projects more easily. We've no intention of changing that ease-of-reuse, though there may be a bit of extra learning required due to the way the game engine works, but the engine will hopefully be fairly easy to make a whole heap of different games using it as I pretty much stopped developing it as a LoK specific engine ages ago, as the code-base has become quite extensive.

Anyway, so I dunno what that means for "modes", but it'll certainly be possible that anything that features in LoK can be re-used to make survival/run or rape games, point and click adventure games or whatever. LoK itself will certainly feature the occasional mini-game, but largely in connection with boss/end-level type encounters, so these will have different game-play. However, the game itself is very much a single overall style of game, it'll be up to others to flesh out games of a different style, re-using LoK elements if they wish.

Sounds good to me. Will there be different levels of difficulty?

That one's difficult to say; it's possible that difficulty settings could be added, but it's not an easy one to just say "yes we can do that", as difficulty settings only really work in games where they are heavily skill based. LoK meanwhile is more a casual RPG, so things like reaction time takes a back-seat so you're never in a situation where you're too busy trying to win to actually just enjoy the scenes or areas. So, with this in mind difficult settings would probably just end up meaning that everything takes longer to do (more low-level grinding needed to proceed), which probably wouldn't be very fun; the game should have a decent range of difficulties within it anyway, as most bosses will be hard to beat first time, or while you might "defeat" them first time, there may be other rewards for doing so in certain ways.

So yeah, game-play is a tricky area, but the shortest answer is that the game should have enough challenge to be fun as a game (otherwise it'd just be a slideshow), but possible to play casually without too much difficulty or repetition, but there may be optional challenges for determined players to beat as early on as possible, or for casual players to go back to later if they wish.
