Question about the game engine

Postby Fenrakk101 » Tue Oct 04, 2011 3:05 am

Sorry if I'm coming off as an idiot, but what programming language is the game written in? I ask because I'm trying to learn Java and I hope to someday make my own spinoffs off of LoK, and I want to know if my Java training will actually help.

If you know the series this is from or the artist for this pic, please tell me - I must know!

I hate to burst your bubble but um well... It's action script...2... Don't fall in to a pit dispare because i am working on a java app.
Anyways since i'm using it as a foundation to learn i am more than willing to let you in on the project.

Would you like to take a look in to it at least?

Well so far i've only got the basics and most of it doesn't make sense to me anyway XD;
And thanks for clearing that up, I keep forgetting how many programming tools they are >.<

Don´t worry, if you only got the basics, Java and AS are very similar (and I think as is easier :)

... I don't care. Your not going to slow me down and the fact is if i can help teach you something than I must have a understanding of it. If i can't then i will most likely soon learn it.

By the way what program do you use for programming?

If you want to get in to contact with me i have a email [email protected]

I spent almost a year, learning a coding language called lua... when I found out that only the game I had learned it on actually used lua, and nothing else fucking did, I cried like a baby, and killed everyone in the room repeatedly with my script, it was fun :D but I don't play Roblox anymore, because its a kids game, and I decided that I can just buy fucking legos -.-
Skullfucking. Any questions?

Legos are so damn expansive now. It's like 10$ for a small box. Not like back in the day when it was 5.45 and it seemed like you were getting more legos in the same sized box.

Yep. I remember when expensive were the kits as big as your head. Now i just look at a box smaller than my hand and cringe.

Anyways on topic.
Ever thought about taking up java? I could use some one to tell me of my fally with making my game engine.

I have... like 20 empty lego boxes in my closet, and a box with at least 14,000 legos in it... I buy a thing of legos every month, I need 27,347 (you have no fucking idea how hard it was to calculate that!) so that I can build and exact scale model of the clasic Angus Young Devil, most widely recognised from the cover of Highway to Hell. only, it'll be 15 feet tall :D

It can be related to tje game via this confusing string of events,
I said something about legos, other people started mentioning prices, dndman mentioned still having legos, I noticed the empty.box pile in my closet,i estimated how many were in my big box, I told you guys because you inspired the original thought, then I adds in my angus young stat ue thing because it would be weird fora grown msn to have thousands of legos without a goal for them.

LoK v0.3 is being written in ActionScript 3.0, which is a decently Java-like language (if you know Java, then it's not that hard to learn AS3, the biggest issue is learning the API more than the language), it has some quirks, but is fairly easy-going.

Do you have a IDE for it?

Adobe sells Flash Builder which is essentially an Eclipse plugin, if you can't get that (it's unreasonably expensive for what it is) then you might try looking for the older free version which was called Flex Builder, which will handle most of the ActionScript editing side just fine, it just lacks a few features.

Most of the good Eclipse features work to some degree, but for $700 it's a pretty weak offering as refactoring is terrible, FlexUnit (equivalent of JUnit) is a buggy pile of crap, so I definitely recommend looking for the old Flex Builder first, as it's just as good, but was available for free, like the whole thing should be if Adobe is serious about Flash as a platform!

Anyway, mini-rant aside, you can use the regular Flash editor for ActionScript, but it's a bit of a pain in the arse, better for light ActionScript 2 type stuff, though it is possible to work with if you must. I dunno if there are any third party IDE plugins that might do it, as Adobe are shooting themselves in the foot a bit by making things difficult for what it is otherwise a nice platform and language to work with!

What i was just talking about you in general but knowing that i likely have the file on a back in my spare harddrive and could pull it up if it's in the master collection. (God i love eclipse)
I could test out if i could code with it by getting the source for CoC. How ever i don't think i will do this until i have a great understanding of java.
