Posting troubles?

Postby Kuragari » Thu May 10, 2018 8:01 am

Is anyone else having trouble with the Quick Reply not loading or popping up? I'm using the Artodia: Black site layout.

... actually, come to think of it, I'm also having issues where clicking on the spoiler or buttons above when posting isn't working either. Anyone else having this problem?

Quick reply disappeared for me too...I've seen this happen before, but I'm not sure what causes it or how to fix it. Just tried to put a photo in text and that's not cooperating either

I haven't had trouble with the spoiler thing but the quick reply thing hasn't been showing up for about 2 days now. It's a bit annoying to not have it.

Well, that's evidence that quick reply has vanished for some at least.

*clicks on bold through sup, whatever the sup button is. Attempts to change font size via toggle, no effect*

Yeah, it seems I have to enter things in manually myself. Which is annoying because I only know the code for a few on here.

Different themes? Mine is prosilver, and quick reply has disappeared, and I think all the links above the text (B, quote, *, IMG, URL, and spoiler, anyway) aren't doing anything...

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

can still do the spoiler manually though...

Thanks for letting us know, but this is an issue that's existed ever since I first setup the site; I've investigated it time and again and there's never been anything wrong on our end, it seems to be some issue with particular user's browsers. Usually clearing caches and/or disabling browser plugins will fix it. Ad-blockers in particular should be disabled for legendofkrystal.com since we don't have any ads anyway, so if a blocker identifies a false positive it tends to break stuff.

Basically the advanced reply features are all handled by a separate bit of Javascript; this handles BBCode buttons and the quick-reply box. If a browser somehow caches a broken or empty version of that file (which some plugins like ad-blockers can cause) then it breaks those features, and they stay broken until the browser's cache is cleared.

There's nothing really that I can do on my end, except to change that javascript file so it's never cached by a user's browser, but that would mean every single user would download a fresh copy every single time they viewed a new page, which would make the site slower (not by much, but not really worth it for the few users who get broken quick-reply buttons).

Those of you trying switching themes; unfortunately this won't help, as they're all based on the same basic themes which use the same code for these parts.

Unfortunately the Google search issues seem to be the same story; only some users are affected which means it's not a problem with the site as such, but likely something in the user's browser. Again as a general rule, try disabling any ad-blockers, then clear your browser's cache, and see if that fixes the issue. Unfortunately ad-blockers may still interfere with the Google search since it's not strictly part of our site (it's just embedded in a page) and it can contain sponsored links. If you know how to access developer tools in your browser you can look to see if there are any errors, which will usually indicate when particular domains are being blocked and why.

Google was the only real option for embedded search at the time I did it, and it still seems to be the case really; I could switch for a Duck Duck Go (no tracking) search instead, but this would be non-embedded. What this means is that instead of appearing to be a part of the site, it would redirect you to theirs to show results, then send you back once you pick one. I'll have a think about it anyway.

WEIRD...putting it in "compatibility mode" solved my problems, not sure why because I didn't need to before...

Is there something I'm doing wrong? I went and deleted the caches and browsing history and stuff I think but it still doesn't seem to be working...

using Internet Explorer, and will double check in a moment to see if reclogging in fixes it.

EDIT: Logging back in doesn't seem to have done anything.

I followed the steps for doing it in Internet Explorer. Unless I was supposed to check the boxes for everything including form data, passwords and tracking and active x filtering...

Switching to Black Pearl for forum theme did bring the Quick Reply back in the form of an automatic posting section at the bottom, rather than a toggable thing. Switching themes back to see if that fixes it further.

EDIT: Artodia Black seems to still not have the quick reply, but Black Pearl also doesn't have the formatting stuff working either even if Quick Reply does.

Add the site to the compatibility thing. Go to the settings and go to Compatibility View settings and then add legendofkrystal . com

Have you tried other browsers? Opera is good and hasn't given me too many problems. I'd also suggest updating java if you can.

I'd definitely agree with trying other browsers; Internet Explorer has always been a compatibility nightmare, especially if you install any plugins of any kind to it. My current recommendation for Windows is the latest Firefox (Firefox "Quantum"), it's still a bit of a memory hog but its responsiveness is IMO best at the moment. For macOS it's Safari all the way; it's a tad slower than Firefox, but uses a fraction of the RAM that Firefox holds onto.

Updating Java won't affect this site, as nothing on it is Java based; in fact I'd recommend getting rid of Java altogether unless you know for a fact that you need it for something (or just do it and see). It has new security issues every other week, and as a result updating it is a huge pain in the ass if you don't actually need it. Since I do software development for Android I unfortunately do, but you may not be similarly afflicted ;)
