If you find a model that is not "rigged" (most of the free ones are not) there are many tutorials for rigging with Blender, which is free, and there's a very nice tool called Rigify, which is disabled by default as a specialist tool, but it comes included.
One thing I want to mention, if you're a coder, you should still study animation. "Animation" means "to bring to life" and you are still bringing things to life with code, often in ways that artists can't.
The 12 Principles of Animation is a classic and a great place to start. And if you end up needing to animate 3D models or any other kind of art on your own, this will help.
