Do you play Rogue-likes?

Postby AcetheSuperVillain » Sun Mar 26, 2017 2:00 am

Have you ever played Rogue-Like games? NewGrounds front paged a new one called Rogue Fable II: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/690180 that I really like. I sort of made one myself a long time ago: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/540262 It's not great. My favorite is probably Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup, but it's very hard and complicated and I don't play it so often anymore. Prospector is also fun, it's in space. Anime Angband was also a hoot.

Seems like there's a certain revival of the Rogue-likes, I see a lot of games advertised as having "rogue-like features". Usually, they really mean "diablo-like" or just randomly generated. Like FTL. FTL is a great game, and very random and very reminiscent of rogue-likes, but I feel like what makes a game rogue-like is Rogue's grid-based exploration, so I get kinda miffed that FTL calls itself a rogue-like. I'm ranting now, aren't I. Better stop.

Did I ever tell you about the time I redrew NetHack's sprite-sheet so that the playable characters were all naked ladies? Good times. Can't share that story on most of the interwebs, but I feel alright with you guys.

Rogue-like? You mean the like original Rouge that was way back in....1980?

Honestly, I'm not much for dungeon crawlers (although there are a few I like). For a dungeon crawler to interest me there has to be something besides *unnamed dude runs around and fights stuff*. The few that I like add betrayals, humor, or things that make it more than just *exploring for the sake of exploring*. Not to say that a good dungeon crawler won't get my attention, but generally I like the ones that aren't typical... (Arcana from the SNES, anyone?)

The biggest problem I see when they talk about being *rogue-like* is I get an idea of *unnamed dude just fighting around a dungeon for the heck of it* and that causes me to say *PASS*...

And how DARE you say that you made all the players naked babes? What do you think we are, perverts?? (Oh wait...don't answer that! :P )

If it's a really good rogue-like, the exploration becomes the story. The uniqueness of each playthrough can really make your current character come to life, even without some kind of written dialog. I think that's the difference between "Diablo-likes" and "Rogue-likes". The Diablo-likes emphasize statistical progress while the Rogue-likes emphasize exploration and luck. If you're getting really specific, that's even a Hack-like vs Angband-like division within Rogue-likes, with the Angband derived games being more Diablo-y. But anyways, the number crunching Diablo-like approach can get very bland. Try Dungeon Crawl, NetHack or Castle of the Winds for a real Rogue-like experience.

To me, one of the really important characteristics of a roguelike (of which there is definitely a spectrum) is how much investment there is in any given player character (i.e. not too much); Rogue, NetHack, SLASHEM, and Crawl are definitely on the end of "keep on dying as you figure out the metagame". By which I mean, the metagame is the actual game, and the ASCII representation and player stats &c aren't really. I could probably be convinced that both Desktop Dungeons and the 7DRL Save Scummer count in this category, too.

Larn, Angband, Diablo, as well as myriad completely forgettable plot-sparse CRPGs are the other end. At best, these focus on character upgrading, and I've lost untold hours to both Larn and Angband... I've rather burned out by now, and prefer my games to be either explicitly puzzles or explicitly narrative-driven.

I see that the roguebasin wiki above mentions two erotic roguelikes of varying levels of functionality: Noxico and Seduction Quest ... the latter looks abandoned; the former looks like a roguelike angle on CoC?

Noxico looks like a cool idea, but I don't understand how to have sex with anything. The comment makes it sound like you should be able to just press / and get an option to fuck people, but I only get look and talk. Any ideas there?

Aha, found a page about it: http://helmet.kafuka.org/noxico/board/t-138

Basically you need to remove the debug lines from the proper place in the folder.

Sounds like if you are program savvy enough, you could write your own missions and scenes and sex positions and everything. This could be fun...<3

Rogue likes came back into the public eye after FTL. Most premium "roguelikes" aren't. They're just hard games with game loops based on dying.

I don't play Rogue-Likes for pretty much the same reason as musical74 but I enjoyed Rogue Fable II much more than I thought I would.
Your game wasn't that bad either, I think it has potential. You're not going to keep working on it?

Oh, thanks.

I have no plans to make a Roguette 2, per se, I mean geez, that was nearly 7 years ago and before the decision to do porn. More likely, I would make some kind of arcade rogue-like. In the early days, I wanted to make an "Invader Rogue" which would look similar to Roguette, but use a Space Invaders or Galaxian type combat system. I even started making that: http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/6ea ... 8fdafeae5c but I had to give up because there was some sort of programming issue I couldn't resolve at the time. Then there was Fortress of Fantasm: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/547219 which combines the rogue-like randomization and hard-as-ballz gameplay with 2.5D brawler combat. I really liked that project, but it was a massive flop commercially. I had metrics to watch when anyone beat the game, back when Mochi was still alive, and as far as I know, no one has ever even seen the final boss except for me. I also did the Diabolical Dungeons of Dr. Devil: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/558054 which was more like Roguette. Fun to make and kinda fun to play, but very lazy design bogged down by how much I hate programming menus.

For a while, I was trying to work on the idea of a non-combat sex adventure game using a variation of Fortress of Fantasm's framework. In the end, I just couldn't come up with a solid idea for how it should work. Discussion here: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=6741 People came up with a lot of good ideas for it, and I put the dungeon code up for anyone to use as part of the Open Brawler: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=6990 For the moment, both of those projects are too much programming and too cerebral to take on until I finish school.

Noxico also gives me a lot of interesting ideas that I need time to sort through. And then there's Astro Vulpus... Poor, delayed Astro Vulpus...
