help?

So I just joined and I want to start rp'ing but I have a feeling I'm going to have to post a character first. Most sites like this do it this way.
I cant seem to find it if its there at all and this says general discussion about anything, and since I also couldn't find a help section I thought this would have to do till I get the lay of the land here.so I'd like to 'generally discus' about the possibility of such things existing, where they might be located, and possibly where someone can easily find them. XD

Glad you asked! If you're looking for help with creating characters, I can suggest a link to a good looking article on the subject. If you just want to know how we do it around here, then here it is.

We have 3 sections. Roleplay, Out of Character, and One v One. Roleplay, the main area, is where in-character posts happen. Yes, you need a character to post in these threads. To make a character and join the roleplay, you have to go to the Out of Character section and find a roleplay you'd like to join. Many storytellers like to keep the number of players limited, to make things easier and to make the story move faster, but it's always worth asking around if you find a thread really interesting.

Once you've showed your interest and the storyteller has approved your joining the RP, you'll want to create and post a character. This character will have to further be approved by the storyteller. Once you've got a character, approval, and an introductory post, you're ready to go! The storyteller will introduce your character, and then you can start posting in the thread. Pacing, interactions, and all the other stuff involved in roleplaying will be basically according to general practice.

The One v One forum is a little different. Most of those threads are simply drop-in. The person looking for an RP will simply post "I'd like a One v One that goes like this...", then you can post in there and set up. Once the two of you have agreed on what you want to RP, you keep posting in the same thread.

I hope you find a fun RP!

I'd like to start by saying I already like this place. in other sites my first posts get treated with hostility by mods and so forth apparently believing that a new member who lost his/her way is just fair game to bully around. I'm sorry to say that such sites have given me a low opinion of mods and people who see themselves as "internet authority figures".
However your outright kindness and quickness to help a noob in need has already given me a high opinion of mods of this site and I thank you.Especially since I probably picked the completely wrong place to post this. You made a difference. :)

As for the busyness at hand: I cant tell where you mention the place to post my character.are you saying that I simply need to go to out of character and just get someone to let me join and in the RP I make my character?
Or are you saying theres a special spot in out of character where I can post the description and visual aid of my character?

There was a sight called anime female wrestling where they did something like that. I see this runs on the same forum crafting systme[or whatever its called] too. This site isn't owned by the same guys is it?

There's a good example for you in Redux of the Polygems.

RavenLord Wrote:Hey Zender, is there a room for one more?

Zender_Solarheart Wrote:Always, Raven. In fact, I have an idea on how to fit you in on the next post...once more people get their posts in, that is.

Also, before anyone asks why I gave you so little to work with out the hangar bay...that was intentional. I'm giving you a chance to show how your characters act when they aren't given much to go on at first, so have fun with it. :P

RavenLord Wrote:Character Sheet:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

-Name: Voltan Ignaen'Karnth
-Race: Dracolite
-Age: 741
-Appearance: coming soon

-Specialization: Blitzer
--Primary Weapon: Plasma Rocket Launcher
--Secondary Weapon: Shot-Mag
--Melee Weapon: Plasma Axe

-Nano-Tech:
Juggernaut: When used, the nanomachines move to intercept inbound attacks, hardening the surface being targeted by the enemy. This reduces the damage dealt to the user by a considerable degree, though it's not enough to shrug off something like a railgun slug or a plasma rocket. Still...nanomachines, son! (For 1 full round, all attacks that hit the user will have their damage reduced by an amount equal to a d20 roll. However, the damage reduction can not exceed 50% of the attack's overall damage.)
Cost: 27 EN.

<Stats>
-HP: 90 (Your health, nuff said. This is calculated by adding your race's HP mod and your Stamina to a base value of 50. See the "Health and Damage" section for more info.)
-EN: 100 (Your suit's energy. This stat is depleted when you use a Nano-Tech ability, or when an attack damages your energy shields. This stat has a starting base capacity of 100, but that capacity can be increased with the right gear, or by a Mechanic's starting EN bonus. See "Health and Damage" for more info regarding energy shields.)

-Might: 1 + 6 + 2 + 2 = 11 (Your ability to deal damage with melee strikes, at move heavy objects, and other strength-related tasks. Add this to your rolls for melee damage.)
-Vision: 1 + 4 = 5 (Your ability to aim (aka, your damage dealt with projectiles), searching ability, etc. Add this to your damage rolls for projectile weapons.)
-Stamina: 1 + 8 + 1 + 1 = 11 (Your ability to resist damage. If your shields are down and an attack hits you, you subtract this stat's value from the damage received. Be advised: when your shields are down, any attack that hits you will do a minimum of 1 damage, regardless of how much your Stamina resists.)
-Technology: 1 + 2 = 3 (Your ability to handle technological tasks, such as hacking into terminals, or piloting vehicles. How it factors in mathematically varies depending on the situation.)
-Intelligence: 1 + 2 = 3(Your ability to gather and analyze information, as well as the power source for a Neo-Elf's Psionic abilities. Like the Technology stat, its mathematical meaning changes based on the situation.)
-Mobility: 1 + 8 = 9(Your ability to move fast, jump high, and so on. When you're targeted by an attack, your ability to evade is a d20 roll plus this stat.)

<Bio>Coming soon.

This is basically what you should do. In general the RPs that are just starting up are easiest to join, so keep an eye out for new and interesting RPs and I'm sure you'll be in one in no time.

Important note: you'll want to post 10 times before posting in character. We only have a few active mods, and there can be pretty large delays between when you submit your post and when it appears. In RP this is especially difficult, as people can fail to notice your post entirely.

if I wanted to send in my character for my own rp beginning how would I go about it? present character bios before making my move in the rp?

sorry to double post.havent had time yet to view the rules. been busy and stuff so I dont know if this isnt allowed but I forgot to add another question. Can I request messenger use. I'd like to be able to introduce myself to users to see if I can organize an rp set with people I would like to try rp'ing with. maybe see if they have any current rp I can join. it would make searching for an RP easyer and avoid me spanmming up RP chats asking to be let in.

Getting 10 posts is the way to use Private Messages. I'd recommend talking about various things in General Discussion to get up to that point.

Yes you would post your bio on the OOC topic for the RP you want to be a part in, and then you wait until you're accepted and wait for the GM's post before diving right into the RP.

Well I do have one in my signature, but it's inactive at the moment, in part of me losing my motivation to continue. I would like to continue it, but I'll wait for another time to get back up.

Otherwise, I don't have to tell you what RP you could join. Just take a look at what is available in the Roleplay section and see what sticks out to you. There are plenty going on and I'm sure one of them will catch your interest. Read the first post, see if you like it and then post saying "hey, can I join your RP?" That's it!

ok thanks. :)

by the way, I still havent posted enough to be able to use the messaging systme. Im not going to lie, the rule set for this seems a bit counter productive. so I coulden't respond to your note. I would like to see your character and your friends characters for the rp. :)

It reduces new members' ability to post quickly and covertly, but it's very productive.

Sure, all right. Yeah hopefully you can feel welcome here, we are good people, even if our characters can get into crazy situations. And sure, I can wait. I just wanna make sure on stuff on my end before I jump right in. I do have a response ready to go just in case.

Well I'd note you about this but I cant note so I have to post it here or this may never get fixed. XD

I just realized I posted my pixie rp in the wrong place. I set it to 1 on 1 when I meant it to be in the general RP area .could you use your godly modly powers to move the post or is there a way I can do this?

Well ideally what you have is more or less something like two players interacting with their characters and seeing what kind of action unfolds from there. A RP like with multiple people will be a little more chaotic if you want them to interact with your character, because of, well other players want to do other things. Really the 1x1 is probably the best way of going around things, although you could have used the Request and Interest Thread there to say "oh, I would like to do a RP with someone with my character." It really comes off as something you will see there instead of creating a topic.

But that's just my thoughts.

You posted it in Discussion->Roleplaying, but since it was in the wrong place I moved it to Discussion->Roleplaying->One on One.

A roleplaying thread without any prior OOC thread and/or without existing and present players doesn't belong in Discussion->Roleplaying. If you're looking for one or two people to join you in a thread, Discussion->Roleplaying->One on One is the right place. If you're looking to collect a larger group of people and organize a longer term RP, then OOC is the place to post it.

As outlined in Renara's "Roleplaying Forum: Game Master's Guide"

Renara Wrote:Remember, a role-play is no good without role-players! Before you post your role play's topic you should make sure you have some people that are actually interested in playing it. If you don't have any, or you want to try and get a few more members, then please post to the Recruitment thread (don't forget to read the first post!). Once you have enough members you can post an out of character topic and start getting organised.

We are lenient about posting the OOC before collecting members, but not about posting an IC thread before posting an OOC and collecting members.

It's fine, at least we are here to help you out point you in the right direction. At least now you can answer my PM and maybe you could see my character and maybe we can start up that RP?

As a general note for joining any forum, it is often a good idea to read all sorts of informative threads before posting anything. Answers to questions and procedures are often "hidden in plain sight". That doesn't mean you won't make a mistake from time to time (I know I have joining this forum recently), but it can save you alot of time and hassle knowing things before hand.

I can only suggest that you try to make up for lost time and read up. Post an interest check in the "1on1 RP Request and Interest Thread" for your 1 on 1, and take it from there.

I'm sorry about that. Recently I've been trying to improve the rule transparency here, as I think it's not entirely up to par.

If these two threads don't clear up your confusion, please send me a PM.
