Who out there is big on writing? I'm looking for someone to give me tips, and basically share ideas and thoughts on writings or pieces. Just anyone I can talk to about the subject of.

Like Dax said, you could basically ask anyone in the RP section for little tips and tricks on how they do things and there's more than a few in the Creative Corner you could ask as well. Personally, I'd recommend asking Napsii. She's always written creatively and descriptively, so she could be a gold mine.

If there's anyone on this forum I'd want to ask about writing, it'd be axmanjack. Whereas my narratives are basically wholly improvised, I think his writing strategy is more calculated and considerate, which for developing a long-term story and conveying a narrative is essential. Not to mention his final product is clearer of mechanical errors and more polished, which is attributable to his skill and better editing. With me, what you see is my first draft hastily reviewed for typos.

Besides, he just has obvious talent; he already produced a complete novel. I mean, I myself have things to say on the topic of writing, but my feedback tends to be a lot more meta and not at all useful to people whose question is "How can I write better?". I'm basically the archetype of the useless philosopher. Also, I'm of the opinion that while any novelist can be a great roleplayer, the inverse isn't quite as true. I'm a roleplayer, not a novelist (my writing experience is limited almost specifically to roleplaying and to boot I forget most of English class) and I don't think a novelist would encounter enough contextual differences between book writing and roleplaying that they wouldn't be able to provide far superior lessons. Roleplaying is still writing, but it can be thought of as several writers sitting at a table, passing a pen around and taking turns writing chunks of a story on a lone piece of paper.

It shouldn't have to be explained that this would (and does) produce fundamentally different reading than something authored by an individual. If you squinted hard at that example, you'd notice it describes a group of people playing Dungeons & Dragons.

But obviously, you can't take that image at face value since it's not the picture we'd call "good forum roleplaying". I'm not going to bother diving into it, but the eventual conclusion I'd reach is that as an individual writer, you're centre stage -- the unchallenged master of the story. It means that you don't have to concede most of your authority to other people like a roleplayer would, but it also means that there's nothing to reference what you make against. Your creation is not considered relative to anything except itself.

That's the most I can harangue right now without becoming [too much more] intolerable.

Anyway, what's the deal with airline food?

I get the feeling I need to hang around the Creative Corner more since I have no idea who axmanjack is.

He's better than me, is who he is. I suck.

Wouldn't everybody's lives have been easier if I just posted that instead? It's a shame I suck so bad I don't see these things except in my rearview mirror.

Read Shitty First Drafts by Anne Lamott

I can't promise quick response time right now, but I could try to help depending on the type of writing? It's more of a hobby for me than anything formal though, so my advice I could give is limited.

I'd say the biggest key to writing is reading, honestly. Reading inspires writing in the most bizarre way at times.

I'd say some of my highly-recommended books (I don't have favorites) are The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck, The Katurran Odyssey by David Michael Wieger, and World War Z by Max Brooks (the novel was actually really good and has little to do with the movie).

Decide what genre you want to write. Basically what is the idea in your head for horror, spec fiction, urban romance etc.
Find a writer group that specialises or at least works with that genre if you wish for feedback and advice. Most work on a tit for tat system. You read mine and I read yours. Be aware some people are bastards, especially when they have the delusion that they are great and their most arrogant nasty comments will help others.

Decide the length of novel/novella/short story you want to write and create acts for the story. If a novel feels like too much work just do what I do and write a certain amount of words a day. I wrote 120k novel in a little over a month by writing 5 A4 pages at least every day. Most days I wrote more. But having a quota to write to can help, because it gives you a daily goal. Even if the stuff you write isn't that great many authors subscribe to the philosophy.
"Spew then clean." or something like that.
Which also works for painting. It basically means get the big picture down, then focus on the details.
Also don't be afraid to have days off, your mind needs a rest.
So map out the likely events to transpire in a story plan. Write a paragraph on what chapter/act will be about. This isn't a concrete plan, just a template you can ignore if you wish. But it can help get the idea onto paper and give you a guide when you feel lost.

Learn how paragraphs work. I kinda forget the specifics. But there are two main types of paragraphs.
The opening statement is the first sentence. The next one/two/three or however many are supporting statements while the last is the concluding statement.
In most cases you won't need the concluding statement, that is more of a school/study thing.

Start typing/writing and look at the plan when you feel like it.

Read your sentences out a loud to make sure they are not too long. You should be able to read one out easily in one breath. Make sure the commas are in the correct place, and if you have more than one comma in a sentence be aware that the sentence should still work when you omit the words between the commas.
eg. "I sprouted off, with my mouth and possibly without my brain, about knowing heaps of stuff."
crap example, but you see what I mean.

Try not to use 'it' and 'that' to much. Generally I will use them when I have already specified the object in question. Using 'that' is fine when you reference the object in the same sentence.
"What is that?" I asked while pointing at it. "It looks like that could be really something."
Really vague right?
Well readers will have no idea and while the plot/object might be crystal clear for you, no one else will know what is going on. So you need to realise that people won't have the knowledge you have. Sounds simple, but it is easy to forget.

Make sure to get your then, than and other such confusing words right. There are plenty of grammar sites to help you. Just type word vs word into google and you can find the answer usually.

I am no expert and while I have written 6 or so novels(I plan to submit to a publisher one day). One of which is on the 4th complete rewrite. I am still a beginner and very much learning. As long as you have fun writing, like I do, you will be able to improve. Every written word is a step in the right direction.

Hope some of the stuff I wrote will help you.

Well, I'm happy to field drafts and so forth, or give an opinion. I'm more of a reader than a writer, but I've put my share of ink on paper.

I know what you mean. Sometimes an idea sounds good at first, but then you lose interest in it. I've lost interest in a lot of stuff I've written. One was an idea for a zelda game. Lost interest then lost the notebooks I was writing it in. Another was that "Intoria" game I tried to start up. Countless other ideas that are lost in time. Like a Kingdom Hearts thing, but I lost that notebook before I could get it on computer. But I have been working on a project for over two years now, on and off, that I really like. Its all part of the creative process.

So here's some advice, for both dax and demon: You WILL lose interest in some things. You WILL NOT always like what you write. You SHOULD keep multiple copies of your work. You SHOULD NOT force yourself to keep writing; when you force it, it won't be as good as you can potentially be. Give yourself some time to think things over, see how you can improve what you have. Most important, make sure you enjoy what you are writing. If you don't like it, or are indifferent to it, there is a higher chance you will abandon it.

I'm no good as a writer, so I prefer making myself worlds. Fleshing out areas, technologies, social patterns, organizations, and storylines is much easier for me than creating a cohesive story, so that's what I spend my time on.

Unfortunately, few of my worlds have made their way out of my head and onto paper.

my suggestion when writing is to make sure you're mind is truly up for it, are you inspired to write it? if its a game fanfic then play the game religously orr (this is just something that inspires me when writing game fanfics) watch machinimas (balls I still cannot spell that XD). another tip from writer to writer (as wierd as it may seem) write it for your self, forget others for the meanwhile. if you like it then there is a potential that out of 7 billion people out there, someone might like it also =] don't write something aimed for others, follow your love, fantasies etc and you'll never tire of writing ^^

I've been writing for awhile but i never bother finishing anything. I always leave it half done, or delete it. -- My advice, Either get someone to urge you to keep going or make sure you have something you aim for with it? Even if it's just "I want to get better so I need to get someone to read this" --- I never bothered showing others what I wrote so I always thought it was bad and never finished xD
