The Boston Marathon came to a halt after two explosions were reported near the race's finish line. Preliminary reports say at least two are dead and more than 100 are reported injured.

BOSTON — Two explosions shattered the finish of the Boston Marathon on Monday, sending authorities out on the course to carry away the injured while stragglers in the 26.2-mile race stopped altogether.

At least two people are dead and 100 others injured, according to a report by the Boston Globe. Boston Police have also confirmed another explosion occurred at the John F. Kennedy Library.

In a news conference, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis confirmed the explosions and provided security measures for Boston citizens. "Don't go any place and congregate in large crowds," Davis said.

Davis also said the incident is an ongoing event and said it is unclear if the explosion at the JFK library is related to the two explosions at the finish line.

Both Davis and Boston Gov. Deval Patrick expressed the necessity for tips and information from witnesses. The Boston Bombs Tipline can be reached at 800-494-TIPS, and to locate victims, the public can call 617-635-4500.

A law enforcement official says cellphone service has been shut down in the Boston area to prevent any potential remote detonations of explosives. The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing.

Two high-level U.S. law enforcement sources said one or more bombs was responsible for the explosions. An intelligence official said that two more explosive devices have been found and are being dismantled near the scene.

The explosions occurred as thousands of runners finished the 117th running of the Boston Marathon, with crowds watching and cheering at the finish line, with the clock reading at just over four hours.

At least four people were being treated at Massachusetts General Hospital, and various media are reporting deaths. CNN reports that at least two are dead from the explosions.

The New York Police Department has stepped up security around landmarks in Manhattan, including near prominent hotels, said Paul Browne, deputy commissioner of the NYPD.

Competitors and race volunteers were crying as they fled the chaos. Bloody spectators were being carried to the medical tent that had been set up to care for fatigued runners.

"There are a lot of people down," said one man, whose bib No. 17528 identified him as Frank Deruyter of North Carolina. He was not injured, but marathon workers were carrying one woman, who did not appear to be a runner, to the medical area as blood gushed from her leg. A Boston police officer was wheeled from the course with a leg injury that was bleeding.

Neither race officials nor public officials could immediately estimate the number or degree of injuries.

EXPLOSIONS HEARD SECONDS APART

About three hours after the winners crossed the line, there was a loud explosion on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the photo bridge that marks the finish line. Another explosion could be heard a few seconds later.

Smoke rose from the blasts, fluttering through the national flags lining the route of the world's oldest and most prestigious marathon. TV helicopter footage showed blood staining the pavement in the popular shopping and tourist area known as the Back Bay.

"There are people who are really, really bloody," said Laura McLean, a runner from Toronto, who was in the medical tent being treated for dehydration when she was pulled out to make room for victims of the explosions. "They were pulling them into the medical tent."

Cherie Falgoust was waiting for her husband, who was running the race.

"I was expecting my husband any minute," she said. "I don't know what this building is ... it just blew. Just a big bomb, a loud boom, and then glass everywhere. Something hit my head. I don't know what it was. I just ducked."

Runners who had not finished the race were diverted straight down Commonwealth Avenue and into a family meeting area, according to an emergency plan that had been in place.

Mike Mitchell of Vancouver, Canada, a runner who had finished the race, said he was looking back at the finish line and saw a "massive explosion."

Smoke rose 50 feet in the air, Mitchell said. People began running and screaming after hearing the noise, Mitchell said.

"Everybody freaked out," Mitchell said.

OBAMA NOTIFIED

The White House says President Barack Obama has called Boston's mayor and the Massachusetts governor to express his concern for those injured in the Boston Marathon explosions.

Obama also told Mayor Tom Menino and Gov. Deval Patrick that his administration would provide whatever support was needed in responding to the incident, the White House said.

The president was briefed on the explosions by Homeland Security adviser Lisa Monaco shortly after 3p.m. EDT.

Vice President Joe Biden was on a conference call with gun control activists when staffers turned on televisions in his office Monday to view coverage of the explosions.

"Apparently there has been a bombing," Biden said. "I don't know any of the details of what caused it, who did it. I don't think it exists yet. But our prayers are with those people in Boston who suffered injury."

Shortly after the explosions, Secret Service shut down Pennsylvania Avenue outside the White House, cordoning off the area with yellow police tape. Several Secret Service patrol cars also blocked off the entry points to the road.

The White House was not on lockdown and tourists and other onlookers were still able to be in the park across the street from the executive mansion.

Prayers for people in Boston, and to anyone here who lives in Boston who has loved ones injured or lost. :(

The alternate history forum I frequent has 30 pages of stuff on it. One of the members there has a brother who lost a foot in the attack. :(

So far its looking like a lone wolf type attack. Personally, I'm just hoping that the two that went off are the only ones.

What really worries me is copycat type incidents, especially because Indianapolis has a mini-marathon going on in may that draws over 35k people.

Hit me especially hard because my brother was supposed to be running there, but ended up getting called last minute away for work.

Edit; @ above comment, the police were saying they found two more that didn't go off.

Oh my god. That's really scary. I've got a close friend who runs ironman races, and another who's running a marathon later this year. Didn't expect that this could be a danger. :(

I've been following this all evening. Tragic. :(

But I'm glad that a lot of people have come out in support of the victims. Apparently, the website of the American Red Cross crashed from all of the people rushing to donate blood.

Amazing that only two died on the scene, that is record low, borderline best case scenario. However many people had some really grave injuries, I saw one guy with no legs and a cowboy like man was literally holding his artery shut with his own hands. Not to mention the fact that a lot of people ran toward the explosions and not away from them to help out, disregarding their own safety.
Not sure how many people follow Suraru on tumblr, but he said he was crying tears of joy, for a different reason, he was happy people were helping the community before themselves, which is something Americans don't normally do.

Current casualties is 3 dead (one an 8 year old) and 140+ in the hospital. 25-30 people are now missing at least one limb.
And yes, the people rushing to help was amazing and warming. Some of the late coming marathon runners kept going so they could donate blood to the hospitals.

Oh, and if you have an easily upset stomach/weak sensibilities, I do not suggest looking at the images of the victims.

Also, Al Qaeda has denied responsibility for the attack. It was likely a domestic lone wolf. Now we just have to hope that whoever did this doesn't decide to try again.

Conspiracy theories are already out there. So far I have seen a lot of BS ones, and only a few legit ones.

Example of some BS ones;
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Prosthetic legs - A few pictures are claiming to say there are fake stumps strapped on, and there is no blood gushing out. I take it they've never heard of a tourniquet.

Seal team members planted the bombs - I checked the youtube footage and didn't see anything like in the pictures. I'm going to guess photoshop users planted those.

Sandy Hook victim is also bombing victim - The news probably just messed up, not really government related.

Now here are some legit theories I've heard/seen;
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Bombing suspects not really suspects - I saw a video of one of them running with their backpack after the bombs, also the picture of the backpack has a different color than the one of the suspect (although that could just be because when things blow up, the heat can change the colors).

First suspect yielded, shot anyways - There are pictures of him on the ground, hands hovering in the air yielding to police.

There are more, and I disprove/assist tons of these conspiracies, so if you know of any more and are curious about them, I can point out the BS from fact.

Don't know if anyone heard about this, but one of the runners in the marathon who missed the explosion lived in Texas. After heading back home after that horrible incident, a fertilizer plant caught on fire and exploded just a few blocks away from his house. Apparently, the universe wants this man dead.
