The worst Internet regulation bill since SOPA/PIPA has reared it's ugly head once again and by no surprise it was the House Republicans who decided to bring it back as a piece a legislation in hopes of getting it passed through Congress. Couldn't have picked a worse time considering the Sequester coming up on March 1st.

Once again it's up to us to spread the word and stop CISPA from becoming the law of the land in the United States from destroying the Internet. Last year Congress tried to pass CISPA into law during the 2012 Election Primaries around the same time and went to great lengths to pass it behind closed doors even internationally via treaty which ultimately failed.

The fact that the government has access to our browsing records doesn't instantly kill the internet; it'll take a lot more than that.

At the same time, it's important to talk about these kinds of issues: I believed SOPA would do serious damage to the internet as a place of free expression, and I think that CISPA could do damage as well.

SOPA/CISPA are the products of corrupt industry lobbies (a free internet cannot co-exist with the business model of the companies that support the bills) and elderly, conservative governments who only understand the internet as a newfangled beepy-boopy contraption that gives them email and money to fund their political campaigns. What we can do as people, of course, is to be politically-minded and put up stiff resistance against nonsense like this. There are steps we can take as a society to solve these problems without resorting to Orwellian legislation that breaches privacy.

I think the clear best step to take is keeping a level head and instead of creating a violent backlash of swearing and general bitching, explaining why it's such a bad idea as much as possible. I don't live in America, but can't you call your local congressmen and voice things like that? However I doubt any of that will happen.

The US keeps two parties to keep each party head-butting the other one, liberals or conservatives. All of this is bs, it's the good ol' boy network that runs the nation, sure there are issues that are liberals vs. conservatives, but as a mostly conservative person, I can say that this is not of our making. Imagine, if you were a dictator, you would want to make your subjects imagine that there are two different political parties so they can bicker between each other and leave you alone, sort of how a puppet state works. CISPA is the work of capitalism, not liberals, not conservatives, nor democrats, nor republicans; I have friends, LBGT community, marijuana users, neo-nazies, and fascists alike; they all hate these restrictive internet acts and bills.

The American system is weird. Because it is a two party system you often have people either voting for a policy they actually agree with, or the other party because they disagree wit it less. Then you have the lobbying in the american government as well. In theory you could contact your local congressmen, but like most democratic city, one voice is never really enough. In Canada we have multiple parties, and as such our political system is much more dynamic. There are not as many lobbyist, nor are they as powerful as the American ones. The thing is our local PPM suffer the same limitations in that one voice isn't heard as much.

I myself am very torn on the topic part of me wants to protect IP but part of me understand where pirating is coming from too.

Are two party system is a mishap! I could vote for about 10 parties last election but really the democrats and the republicans are the one's likely to win. We're also only covering the two parties in the news so the others are soon forgotten. I vote interdependently so i'm ethically good. Really, the USA is fucking screwed!

Let me help you think of this in a different way thae, vote against this bill because it's the best of two options. Many studies have shown that piracy increases sales of a product. I saw one study that listed on average people bought 40% more music if they pirated music in general. so piracy makes the pirates happy and increases the profits of business (doesn't really decrease profits if you pirate. Not in the same way, still illegal!) which makes the business happy; so under utilitarian rules, it is ethical to say nay to this bill. Then we add on to the fact the orginal bill was so one sided to business, one could say it's unethical to say yes to this bill. ^^ god ethics is mess up.
