Would you want one?
Could we have one?
Or is it even needed?

Its not like I want to presure Renra into anything but I was just thinking if the forum should or could have one. There are people that work on projects with several people and their biggest problem is comunication an this might solve it. I know nothing about website managment so I dont know if it even would be possible. So what do you think .Would you want one? If yes do you know how to add one? How much does it cost? Or is it even needed?

Poll is up so we shall see how desired this option would be.

We ran in to the same trouble in the RP section. I believe the trouble was not enough bandwith.

We could also set up a dedicated IRC server. Problem with that one is that it's not integrated and people can "masquerade" as other users.

If someone is a pro at coding (sadly not me), they could make a PHP-based IRC socket and make a front-end in the forums. Then the bandwidth would be a concern of the IRC server host, and the IRC host could be different from the forum host.

Good idea zeus, if someone could set that up then everyone would probably be using it.

Damn, I was beaten to the IRC idea... still, i have seen some IRC chatrooms with good registration system scripty things, that could posibly solve the problem of imposters

Ah, true. It doesn't have to be directly correlated to the forum.

But really wouldn`t you notice if it was an imposter? We`ve all been here a while and the only people worth really imposting have their own mannerisms and such that we all know and when someone claiming to be someone else starts acting different people would notice right?

I don't know about that. A serious lurker could certainly impersonate accurately.

AND the imposter is quickly identified.

It's far from ethical, but isn't it theoretically possible to use a tracking cookie for this? Granted, some people wouldn't be happy to have to have a tracking cookie to have their name in the chatbox, but perhaps combined with having to be signed in to view it and people who don't have a cookie showing up as guests, we could have a coding nightmare a decent chatbox.
