I was going to recommend a game I used to play all the time growing up, but I do not know how I feel about it after playing 10 games to get some screenshots for you. A lot of the players are arrogant, one of them was getting on my case because I didn't say "Hi" and that I was arrogant and the like because of it. Sigh, anyway here is my mini review of a game I used to play growing up, and I think you will enjoy it.
So here is the basic overview. Have you ever played any of the turn based tactics games, such as Final Fantasy Tactics? Well Tactics Arena Online [TAO] is a game similar to that in many regards. There are 4 servers you can play on, 2 of which are typical non-premium players, 1 which is where premiums and non-premiums tangle it up, and 1 which is for premiums only. Premiums enjoy many benefits, like premium only units and their account not getting wiped once a month.
So that being said, let's look at the game from a non premium user's perspective. After creating an account (As simple as opening the browser based game and imputing a user name with a password) you are greeted wit this screen;

Clicking on your avatar, you get transported to the formations page. Here you can dictate which of the units you will use (and if you are in a game when a "drop happens" the winner of the game get's that extra unit). So you can change your avatar, color, unit compositions, and their placement on the board.

From there you can place your avatar on a free board, and a player will fight you.

In my case, after years of not playing, I got matched up against a "good" player by statwise, though it looks like he was a sandbagger so it doesn't count. I was going to win but he had some lucky defense that saved him, so I gave it to him. Didn't help he whined every ten seconds so I didn't feel like playing him

That's TAO in a nutshell.
