Remedies for insomnia?

Lately, I've taken to being nocturnal for some reason. I've tried everything I can think of to go to sleep at a normal time, so I figure it's time to call in some stranger remedies. Any suggestions?

smoke a bunch of weed then take a sleep aid... you can buy some weak ones at a drug store.

So this happened to me over winter break. I completely reversed my sleep schedule. I would wake up at like 7 pm and go to bed at like 8 am.
The way I "fixed" it was just to force myself to be awake at normal times. So if your friends want to hang out at noon then do that, and once your done go to bed. It's all about baby steps.

Yeaaahh... unfortunately, I'm looking for.. non-herbal options, shall we say. As for sleep aides, they're more of, make you feel extremely crappy the next day aides for me. Sure, they knock me out, but I can't function for nearly 10 hours after I wake up from those. It's an option I'd also like to avoid if at all possible.

Haha, great suggestions guys, except for one thing. I have no clue how to program whatsoever. I dunno, maybe I'll take a class on it over the summer or something, maybe remedy that.

Unfortunately, I have tried vigorous exercise, and that doesn't work either, sir.

No fear! Ex-Insomnia is here!
There are actually many remedies for sleep problems, two mentioned above, one not recommended.
To better help with your sleep problem you need to find the source.

Are you looking at a screen, either computer or TV, a lot?
Are you exercising regularly every day or two?
What activities do you do when you sleep?
Is your bed neat or cluttered?
Do you do anything other than sleep on/in your bed?
Do you eat before /within two hour of sleep?
What kind of foods do you eat before dinner?
How dark is your room when you sleep?
How warm is your room when you sleep?
Is there any noise when you sleep?

I’ll think of more questions later, just try to answer them as best you can. I’ll check back later.

yeah its probably not actually insomnia, theres no real trick to it. might be a cycling sleep disorder or something... doubt it though, basically your schedule isnt going to flip until you have to wake up at like 7 am one day and end up only getting liek 2 hours of sleep... dont try to pull an all nighter/dayer to try and fix it though, especially if you're just at home... you make it to 3 pm and wake up at 10 pm

Alright, here we go, in order;
1. Yes, I'm looking at a screen a lot, both for recreation and my major in college. Computer screen specifically, but I always try to shut it down an hour before bed, if not more.
2. Yes, I exercise regularly, including, but not limited to, swimming laps, running, body weight exercises, biking, racquetball, and tennis.
3. Not exactly sure what you mean by activities when I sleep. If you mean before sleeping, I generally read a book for a bit before settling down.
4. My bed's pretty neat when I sleep, I prefer making it every day rather than letting it just go where I toss it when I wake up.
5. Duh I do other things in my bed.. but those are personal, if you catch my drift :3
6. I might have some fruit about 45 minutes before going to bed sometimes.
7. For dinner, it's whatever the dining hall's serving. Not much control over that at college. I tend to snack on wheat crisps during the day if I get hungry.
8. When I sleep, my room is darker than Gorepete's black heart when breaking saves :3
9. I like sleeping at a somewhat cool temperature, so typically between 65-70 degrees if I can manage it.
10. There's the usual white noises from cars driving past and everything, but nothing I can think of that would keep me up.

That's sounds good so far :)... But that eliminates a bunch of remedies. :?
All that's left is to force your body to the sleep scheduled that you want after a sleep deprivation.
Start by staying awake for more than 24 hour, Synchronize the time so that you will feel too sleepy just before your preferred time to sleep. For example; If I want to sleep at 8 pm, therefor I wake up around 8 pm.
Within that time you may want to take power naps of 15~20 minutes to bare the sleepiness, just don't take too many.
When the time comes just do the routine you normally do when you go to sleep.
Bam! Your body will associate the exhausted feeling with the time and sleep.
From then on maintain a PUNCTUAL sleep schedule; don't sleep in late, don't wake up earlier, don't stay up late, and don't go to bed early.

Tell us how this worked out afterwards.

I do admit, Its really hard to do sense a lot of things can interrupt your schedule but it can be done.

the only solution thats ever worked for me in fixing a sleep schedule is reducing but not cutting sleep. it kind of happens naturally if you're not a dumbass. if you have to be awake for work or something dont call in sick, just get as much sleep as you can. you can just set your alarm and try to do it on its own. personally i have to have somewhere i need to be in order to fix it

Sounds about the same here.

If i have to be up for a one time thing and I in fact did go to bed at a reasonable time, I will wake up nearly the time i wanted. Some times i'm off by about 3 minutes but most of the time it's dead.
God i love my internal clock.

i cant go to bed at a reasonable time, i used to do all nighters when that happened in university. thats what kills you. if you decide to get like 3 hours of sleep instead it just means you'll be more tired the next night

You can try ‘Focusing on breathing’ to get quality sleep and conquer insomnia. This technique reduces the flow of thoughts, calms the mind and relaxes the muscles, inducing quality sleep. The following mode of this technique can be tried when lying in the bed and needing to sleep.

Triple segment mode: Every finger has 2 cross lines, dividing it into 3 parts or segments. Place the tip of the thumb at the top segment of the little finger and breathe three times. Move the thumb to the middle segment and breathe three times. Move to the bottom segment and breathe three times. Repeat the same steps at the next 3 fingers. At the thumb, place the tip of the index finger on its segments and follow the same steps. Then switch to the other hand and repeat the process all over. Continue to practise, switching the hands. When you wake up in the morning, you will be surprised how you slept so well last night!

The detailed article on insomnia can be seen in this page: http://countingbreaths.com/wp-content/u ... nd-out.pdf

We can use this ‘Focusing on breathing’ anywhere and anytime, to avert potential stress or dissolve built up stress!
