Legends of Junta - A short story by Gorb'z

Postby Gorbaz » Sun Jul 14, 2013 10:46 pm

So, most of you know me from the various RP's I've been in or started on this site, and some of you may only know of me by reputation as one of those mad English folks. Well, thanks to skills that I have developed through the various RP's I've been in, combined with an awful lot of spare time sitting on my arse on a train, I've managed to put together a 50-page short story, get it printed, and up online for the whole world to see.

At this exact moment in time, it is expensive. This is because I need to sort out the last few pages that have had the cover reprinted twice on the inside back cover. I am trying to get those sorted out, at which point the price will drop and it will be going up on both Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. I plan to have the price set at about £5 (about $7-$8 US) which I consider to be a fair price.

I will put up here when it is available, so if anyone feels so inclined they can go and get a copy. I've sent out 17 preview copies so far, and had very positive feedback so far. So, I figured since I've been part of this community for so long, I'd let you guys be the first to know.

Blue was rather insistent that I put Kitsunes in. So I put one in.

-_- I didn't even know you were writing a short story.... so how could i demand for the safe return of your first born, that you put kitsune in.
Also, this might seem odd but kitsune is singular and plural

It's first iteration was a CYOA, and you said something along the lines of "NEEDS MORE KITSUNE". So, when it transitioned to a book, I put one in, even though it wasn't specifically called such.

How are you going to deal with the self-publication stuff? I want to get into the book-writing business at some point as well, ye see? :D

Well, it's not a proper job for me, just a side-project that, if people want to buy it, they can. I'm not self-publishing, but doing it through Lulu.com as they cover all the administration, materials and shipping costs involved. However, they do demand a rather high percentage of the profits - around 70-80%, I think. I thought it best to go with them rather than sending off to a publishing house as I still retain all the rights to the work, get free ISBN and copywrite, and it's a darn sight cheaper than paying for all the materials yourself unless you know you have an audience that are going to buy enough that you can make that cash back

Personally, I had thought of freely publishing whatever it is I have to publish for free, and then have some kind of donation box. :P
Ye know, PDF and that stuff.

You could go down that route for sure. Maybe put up a a couple of teaser pages and set something up so that people can donate what they think it's worth to get the download of the full thing? Or maybe go down the e-book route, as that has minimal overheads

HA! That was my biggest problem, too! To be honest, all I can advise is to write what is fun.

Jezzi, the first book I've ever written and gotten published, started off as a CYOA as I said before, but I had so much fun writing it, and not to mention getting feedback on it at various stages, that it grew into a book in its own right. I am currently writing the second book because I had that burst of inspiration and, once again, am having fun with the writing.

Don't try and force it, either. I will show in your work. (or so I'm told)

To write what is fun... Then it has to be something surreal and dreamlike with a lot of disturbing and pleasant things in it. Haha. xD

I'm guessing that the first book pops the cherry, allowing you to write the next one with ease, eh? Or is that wrong?

An interesting way of putting it, but not incorrect. If you do a good starting book and people like it, they'll ask for a follow-up. And, of course, you already have an established world and characters to work with if you want, or you can pick a totally different group of characters

Just a quick update for all you folks, my short story will be coming to Amazon within the next couple of months. I've prety much halved the price previously set for it, so that it's easier on the pocket. I'm also writing books two and three!

If any of you do decide to buy it, please do let me know what you liked / disliked about it

Then you better go and start writing then, Blue! I'm already on my second short story, with ideas for a third ready to go!
