Game reviews

Postby BlueLight » Fri Sep 14, 2012 12:48 pm

Hi, so i have a collection of games on steam that I rarely play or haven't played because i'm doing other things like playing dwarf fortress... you know a free game... it looks like net hack so the rule about not hiding it when you boss comes into the room still applies! Anyways i'm starting to go though my games slowly and surely and have found some real gems i'd like to share with people. I'm going to start putting up reviews of these games i have, which i'm either discovering, rediscovering or just plain think they aren't love. So while i created this thread to show case my own collection of games i'd like to review, i have to problems with other people commenting on reviews or making their own.

Here are some games that i plan to review.

I have quite the steam list myself, if FTL dosent take up all of my time when it releases in 4 hours I might add a few of the worst purchases I've ever made so everyone can stay the hell away from them.

Have fun dying in FTL!

Alpha Prime

Alright, so first off i'm what i'd call a retro gamer. Basically I think the best games were made about 10 or more years ago. The fact that the market is flooded with Action games which are crap, reinforced this view. For instants, Call of duty games are crap from my point of view. This is mostly to blamed on the games being easier and dumbed down over time. (I admit that COD2 and only 2 has a place in my heart!)

So i am very old school about FPS and this game reminds me about all the goods things in Half life or Red Faction. So the best way to describe this game is call it a mix of Doom 3 and Red Faction, but some formula changes for the better is the lack of armor and a air supply(which i admit, it was in doom 3) in airless areas. I'm start to noticed that after playing this game for a few hours, it seems i can do this game credit... sorry.

Moving on, i enjoy the fact this game doesn't treat the players like idiot. The first instants of this is in the tutorial level (I hate it when these are built into the main game) I bet after going though it once, i can beat it in less than 3 minutes. I think the tutorial was masterfully done and should be respected. It assumed some of us were idiots with crouching but normally that key is CRTL and not C so i understand their logic. I was shocked at how fast i got my first 3 standard weapons. Pistol, shotgun, and the fully auto firing gun. Each weapon, you'll have to get a taste for personally, but i strangely like the machine gun the best so far (I normally use the pistol in FPS). It is accurate but it doesn't hold enough ammo for my taste and i never have enough spare ammo laying around. The shot gun is a good second weapon but the firing rate is slow and it takes more than two shots to kill some one. The pistol is kinda useless compared to the others but i still like it.

Now with my short play though, i was playing on hard and this leads to the best part of the game. I was challenged and still am by how unforgiving this game is. I have not once had a weapon with full ammo, and more than once I've run out of ammo for two or more weapons. Health is rare and getting hit, happens often. The robots take some punishment, which isn't much expect for the fact they hide behind cover. Also, the game doesn't display the fact your getting hurt, very well.

I found this game enjoyable and i'd personally think i'm willing to say it's worth at least $15. I believe there is a demo on steam if you want to try it that way.

AI War: Fleet Command

I'll start by saying I don't really like classic RTS's anymore. Things like Starcraft, Command and Conquer, and Age of Empires are very micro heavy games which is why I tend to enjoy grand strategy or turn based much more. That being said AI War Fleet Command is a very good RTS. While personally it drives me nuts and I've never done a full match, it has a ton of content including (as you might expect from the title) a very powerful AI component that adapts quite well depending on what you set it up to do. Essentially its humans VS AI and I would only get this if you had friends that also play with you. It features quite a few units including defensive structures and a wide array of gnats to throw at the enemy. A battle usually has hundreds of ships on either side which would be good... if there was much to look at. Its a 2D game but the art is minimalistic, its not fun to watch so I dont get any real satisfaction from the massive scale. Its only 10$, 17$ if you buy it will all the DLC and you could probably find it as low as 8$ on a steam sale with all of the DLC. Defiantly try the Demo first to see if you enjoy it, this game is not for everyone.
