A shiver runs down my spine, and a... tingling from the strange spell woven into my reproductive meridian at remembering when I became Ruby's mother. I struggle to get my mind back on business, examining the strange device. The smell of the black powder does seem familiar, like it's got some common components? I taste a small bit, seeing if I can work out what it might be. The object that's jammed into it and not moving... is that the projectile? Strange that it's stuck, it should be removable, right? So they can put a new one in, just like a crossbow... I begin to explore with my portal magic, looking to see if I can maybe create a specialized portal for this. I do it all the time for my body, which is practically honey-combed with portals to my 'secondary' body allowing me to manufacture compounds in my personal portal space rather than having to use up valuable room in my physical body.

Nope, not in the near term at least. Besides, you don't have a good source for sulfur.

Isn't... isn't Ruby's father in stasis? He's in critical condition, but if you are careful you could possibly save him... and maybe make Ruby some siblings, though they would go back home... No! Focus! You taste it, and you can tell it has some moderately rare components like saltpeter, but also huge amounts of brimstone, compared to what you find in organic components. You will have to figure out a source of this before you could even hope to replicate this powder. As for the object in the barrel... it does shift as you poke a the rod down the length, having just enough friction to not move from tilting, but you would need something that can catch it so you can pull it. Well you might be able to whack it against the floor and move it that way... If there is equipment maybe one of the corpses has some on them? You haven't full stripped them down and try to figure out what everything is. Creating a portal might be tricky because while having precision portals related to your own body is trivial, creating one for an outside object might be far more difficult. While possible, it would take time and possibly might damage the musket. You do have spares though.

Shaking my head to clear the lewd thoughts that my hormonal adjustment should have taken care of, I refocus on the object I'm exploring.

Yes, these compounds are strange enough I can't duplicate them without some proper material sourcing. Poking at the strange device, I decide that I've got a few spares, and that if I 'miss' with a portal, it's not the worst thing I could do. I create a small portal, the same size as the hole, with an output nearby before I slip the portal into the mouth of the hollow device and slowly extend the portal up the long shaft, looking to see what could pop out of it.

You have trouble keeping the portal exactly centered, and some shavings from the barrel itself comes through as you go further down, and eventually a solid ball falls out, followed by more black powder, packed tightly so it is clumped. The ball itself is metal, but soft. You're able to shape it quite easily.

Playing with the small metal ball, this must take the place of the arrow? I lick it, trying to taste the metal to see what it is. Metal dragons have an intrinsic knowledge and the ability to control it, but my own alchemical nature should tell me more of what I can do with it. I taste some of this powder as well, just to make sure it's the same stuff, and not some kind of alchemical chain reaction.

It's a poisonous heavy metal... not a quick poison and fairly weak neurotoxin at that, so you don't think that's the primary effect. It's probably just that it is dense. The powder is indeed the same though.

Hm, weak neurotoxin... still, the high density and fairly soft nature are likely the main features. Thinking on it, maybe it's closer to a blow gun? That would make more sense, the powder bursts or unleashes a great deal of expansionary force, the soft metal keeps allows it to wedge itself in and force the blob of heavy metal down the tube. Of course, this hole in the side is likely a weakpoint or way for the material to escape, but that's probably all you can do...

Still, I can taste some of the potency of the powder, and magic seems like it would have a much better ratio of umph to effort, although the fact that you can just stock pile it does appeal to my natures.

As you finish your analysis you smell the wafting of cooked meat, and you see Ruby returning with some... simply fire-roasted meat.

Simple is fine. My sense of taste is highly developed, but tends toward more analytical than emotional response. Still, I grab a few skewers and offer some to our guest.

As it turns out... there are no skewers... It's just slabs of meat cooked before being sliced into strips by her claws... You quickly make a note to give her some lessons on cooking... at least the basics. While she doesn't mind eating off the ground, others do. Still your guest raises an eyebrow at the meat as you approach her, "What... is it?" Well... You're not sure what Ruby found actually... Wasn't there that basilisk you killed? What other meat did you put away again that Ruby could find?

Basilisk or... centaur? Well, that's probably not best to mention if I can help it. Not that it causes me too many problems. "Basilisk most likely. Hm, we'll need to find some cookware. Probably should have bought some, but we'll make do for now." I suggest as I munch down on the meat. Probably need to find some rice or something as well.

"I blinded it and that stabbed it to death. That seemed like a good way to do it." I mention, not wanting to get too deep into the fact that I'm magic resistant.

She just looks... well 'looks' at you for a long moment as she tries to wrap her head around it. Well... it was a bit more difficult then you let on, and you had to leave most of it to the monsters attracted to the blood, but semantics... Wait... you did poison it... while it... probably didn't permeated through the meat yet and cooking should break down the poisons to... well not exactly tasty but harmless components, Ruby's cooking might not be all the way through... Might want to warn her against and raw spots.

"There may also have been a paralytic poison involved." I honestly tell her. The venom itself is fast acting, but doesn't last long in heat. I never could figure that out on the handful of fire dragons I managed to try it on. Still, it breaks down easily so it works okay. I will have to see about developing lethal venoms that are only lethal to the creature and not someone who eats it. I'll have to find some snakes at some point. I continue to munch on it, tasting it to make sure that all of the venom is broken down.

Unfortunately, it seems to be the nature of biological materials. Heat seems to be its natural enemy... You could use some metal based poisons that would be less prone to that, but it has a nasty habit of permanently contaminating anything it gets into. And while yes you can have biological systems to filter it out on your own, those are not cheap to maintain, nor would biological systems to contain them. They never seemed worth the trouble, and since most things don't have a body temperature measured in the hundreds, it hasn't been a major deal. The elf seems to be thinking for a moment before finally saying, "I'm not hungry." Laying the hunk of meat to the side.

I shrug at the woman deciding she doesn't want the meat my daughter brought her. "Fair enough. I'll try and get some more refined cooking elements as we go." I tell her, not entirely sure where I'm going to find them, but willing to at least take a stab at it. Cooking supplies does seem like the kind of thing I should have. Knowing she's exhausted, I quickly finish my food and try to keep her talking about things, anything she's willing to volunteer before suggesting it's time to turn in. The beds, also, are not the most comfortable, but will do since we're extremely safe.

You try to think what you brought. You might not have taken anything to cook, since you're not too picky and well... you weren't exactly expecting to make friends with the lesser races. You do have the travel rations though.

I summon a few travel rations, making sure that they're some of the more common ones and offer them to her.
