(DEX+1(Surprise!):24)

Whether the amazon facing the one skeleton saw what you were doing or simple luck, your bolt slams into the undead hip at just the right moment as it was finishing a cross handed stroke, the impact and moment causing it to overextend far more that it should, only to catch a heavy spear head in the throat, before it's pushed back and forced down, the amazon planting a foot on the chest and using the leverage as a massive pry bar. The head makes a 'pop' sound as the neck fails and the head begins to roll away. The amazon gives you a slight nod, but focuses on joining her sisters. The skeleton soldiers are now badly outnumbered, and being encircled. At this point, you can push, taking a chance that you'll get hurt, or you can lean back a bit and let the much more robust amazons do their jobs. (flat d20 roll if you want it)

I return the nod before deciding... Fuck that's enough. Letting out a sigh, I slump against the wall, slowly sliding down as the tension from my first actual battle starts to fade.

The group of amazons does indeed make short work of the remaining skeleton soldiers. After a few moments, the amazon commander comes to you, offering a hand to help you up. "You did well. Sort of. Normally, splitting up like that would be very dangerous, but because of your attacks from the rear, we were able to push through with a minimum of injuries and very quickly." She gives you a nod before leaning in, "Don't ever run ahead like that again, that's what our scouts are for," she gives your hand a bone cracking squeeze before she lets you go.

"Wasn't exactly planned, but I made the most of it," I give a wry smile as I take her hand, nodding at her suggestion. This is my first mission, I need to be more careful, and stop getting distracted by what might be ahead that I lose sight of what is already here. I wince slightly at the squeeze, but it's hardly something new to me so I just endure through it. Retrieving my axe, I decide to keep the crossbow for now. It'll be better against skeletons then a bow and arrow, even if it slows down my rate of fire.

You've got yourself at least a little bit of loot already, keeping the crossbow with you and loading up a bolt. There's still the other side of whatever room this is, and it's hard to tell exactly what it could be. Knowing your luck, it'll be filled with horrid monsters that the skeletons were keeping locked away. The amazon team begins to take up positions, two spear users at the door entrance, one to tug it open. You could try to push your way to the front, and possibly sense something through the door, although you're not confident in it and you would look foolish. You could also hang back and try to position yourself to shoot between the two amazons ready to force the entrance. You could also stop and try to think of something else.

Despite really wanting to try and peek through the doors to get some idea of what is on the other side, after just being warned about being too far in the front, I reluctantly relent. Instead I position myself where I have the widest clear field of fire, should we be attacked as soon as the doors open.

The two on the door throw their weight against the door, and it groans as it's forced open, long dead air billowing out and making you clench as it washes over you. The two amazons at the head dart insides, sweeping the corner rapidly and slowing to a stop rather than continuing to rush in. They glance around for a few moments, and all you can see is them checking the area. Finally, they motion you all forward, and you can enter the large room. It was indeed a throne room, and there's a crown resting on the throne itself. There's some intense emotional energy clinging to the crown, although there's a lot of different elements of magic interwoven with it. There's definitely some necromantic magic as well, it's possible this is some kind of magical key, but without a necromancy expert that's up in the air. That said, the raw magical power it generates is nothing to sneeze at, it's possible this is the source of energy that powered all six skeletons. Or it could be a trap of some kind, there's no telling for sure unless you go and poke it. The amazons almost look... disappointed that there's not a boss fight or something.

"Magic," I call out, pointing to the crown, "Pretty powerful too. There's a bunch of different kinds but it might be the cause of the skeletons, so who knows what will happen if we touch it." Well with the implications being what they are the amazons might very well get their boss fight. I signal that I'm going to go for it, and would like at least someone to watch my back as I do so. If I'm going to get cut off by skeletons I want at least one of them backing me up.

Nothing happens as you approach it, but you can feel the tension rising in the air as you get closer to it. As you take your first step onto the steps leading up to throne, a howling growl echoes from one side on the other side of one of the walls. The wall bulges in as you instinctively take cover behind the group, and a massive humanoid figure, crouched over like a dog forces its way past the bricks in the wall. Instead of snarling, it lets out a repeated chattering, like multiple mouths of teeth all clacking in discordant patterns. A monstrous mace thumps against the floor as the cramped posture of the undead flesh golem, as that's the only thing it could be in your mind, enters the room. Frost and raw necromantic power radiate off of it. The small alcove it was in appears to not be a living space, but almost like a tomb that the creature was left embedded in to guard the crown and throne.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Wasn't aware we're getting all DS3 up in here. If I went the other way would I have found the Dancer?

"Fuck," I cry out as I dive to safety. What the hell is that? An undead creature? But of what? Why is it acting like a dog? Why does it have multiple mouths? I let loose a crossbow bolt at one of the mouths, hoping that them being soft and fleshy means it will take damage from that.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Nah, wasn't originally planning on it, but I was reading something and a mutated undead guard dog came up, and I was like 'fuck yeah, that's awesome'. So here we are, boss guard monster.

Also, I think the current plan of battle harem acquisition is that the catgirl with a gun is probably going to be first. Second, I'm thinking a psycher/wildmage who imprints on the gun and uses it instead of a wand or crystal: https://rule34.xxx/index.php?page=post& ... id=3487747 https://rule34.xxx/index.php?page=post& ... id=3587491

The disheveled helmet, barely clinging onto the mutated mess of different heads echoes as the various extra jaws chatter in incoherent noise. You can make out multiple eyes under the helmet, more than there really should be and take aim, (DEX:20). Your shot flies true, rupturing one of the largest eyes, and a half dozen of them start to focus on you (gen:11) but an amazon lets out a bellow of rage and charges, only for the undead monster to focus on her, its arm very clearly bending at two distinct elbows as it winds up and throws itself full bodied behind a flanged mace, that knocks the poor woman across the room. She begins hacking up blood, which you suppose is a good thing as she's still alive after what was probably going to be a very lethal blow. At least it's not focused on you.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Sounds good.

I curse, backing off as I load another bolt. It clearly got pissed off by the hit but I don't know if that's a good sign. It didn't seemed harmed at the very least. Glancing at the injured amazon, I decided that it's probably more important to prevent it from doing that again. This time I'm aiming for the joints of its arm, hoping that it'll limit the amount of strength it can put out.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

So, I can bring in the catgirl on this trip, or I can bring her in on another trip, or we can do a slave market thing depending on how you want to do it. Finding the catgirl 'here' at least gives your character a bit more information to work with on the artifact.

(Dex:12)(Gen:3)

Your aim is a bit more hindered as the creature begins to move around, leaping across the field and slamming another amazon with its mace, this time in a downward motion. She lets out a scream, and you her shoulder literally fold downward on her torso as the mace pulps her bones and nearly shears her arm off. Your bolt lands in an elbow joint, slightly open to reveal flesh, but doesn't seem to hit anything vital or lodge anywhere inside of the joint to hobble it. Disgusting goop leaks from the eye, and you see a bit of magic in it, but little seems to be coming from the elbow. It's still obviously undead, but the amount of flesh on it makes you think that it's going to be more vulnerable to the slicing and penetrating blows, but less so to the blunt damage as it doesn't really seem to be 'bleeding' as 'oozing'. The head definitely seems to still be vulnerable.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

This trip seems reasonable. We at least someone who can be there to get bound. Also I'm not sure about a slave market... It just seems too... corporate, for lack of a better term, to be amazonian. If anything I think it would be more a... direct sale type of thing. I.E. A branch head goes and talks to other branch heads about their desire to either buy or sell a slave and their either say they're interested or point them in the direction of someone who might be.

This isn't going well. I'm the only who's managed to do anything to it, and what I've accomplished amounts to not much. Loading another bolt I change aim for it's head, firing on the move, so I can more easily dodge out of the way should I catch its attention again. I shout out, as I let the bolt loose "Hey, can someone get behind this damn thing and hamstring it!? I'll see if I can piss it off."

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Fair enough. Also, how have you liked the 'little fish in a big pond' encounters so far?

(Dex:21, gen:10)

Somebody does take a shot at the things legs, and it starts before it flips around to try and deal with them. As it does, you spot your chance, planting the bolt upside its head sliding between the armor. It yowls in pain, before it starts to turn toward you, menacing rage radiating from it before the amazons take advantage of the stun and lay into it, hacking at thick armor and limbs to try and straddle it. The creature, while focused on the amazons seems to be under the impression you're a threat now, and keeps its face pointed toward you.

Still like the biggest fish in the school. While he is clearly out of his depths the other amazons seem even more overwhelmed.

Improvement. It's no longer splatting our numbers at a consistent rate, in large part because it's keeping an eye on me. Just got to keep my distance. I keep moving, slowing only when its time to take another shot. Last thing I want to be is caught flatfooted when a giant mace is coming for my face.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

To be fair for them, they've been tanking very well since he's effectively been pure DPS and hasn't had to deal with more than one actual fight. That said, if you want your character to get in a fist fight with the half ton flesh golem blasting out ice magic, say the word. Otherwise, I'm going to start wrapping it up.

(Dex:19, Gen: 12)

The creature seems to have been holding back a bit, and vomits raw frost magic all over the floor, several of the amazons yelping as they're paralyzed for a moment. The creature seems to have been keeping a serious eye on you as it quickly begins to scuttle after you, and you're hit with a momentary panic is the damned thing seems to fly across the ground. You dodge the attack, planting another bolt into the side of its head, which certainly seems to be a weak point. The numerous obscenities coming from the small field of amazons is punctuated with a few loud cracks as the ice shatters and a few of the amazons begin to reform up. The obvious tactical decisions before you are to dodge toward the amazons and let their superior numbers, training, and power keep the creature occupied, or to lead it further away from them to give them time to free their full numbers and attack it from behind, assuming it's focused on you.

He's not designed for close combat. I think the grappling with skeletons was enough for me.

AND THAT'S WHY I KEPT RUNNING! I silently scream to myself. I run perpendicular to the amazons, giving them time to regroup for their counter push but keep the distance relatively similar so I can dive behind them once they do. I'm not about to let this thing chase me into a corner without an escape plan.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Throw down a CC on the tanks and then go straight for the DPS/Healer, always the best boss strat.

Also, debating making the catgirl a WH40k fan or something else silly like that. Mostly so she can get a 'Bolter Bitch' tattoo on one arm. Mostly for giggles.

The amazons see your movement, beginning to form up into another protective wall while helping their compatriots free themselves. The commander though seems to finally lose patience, pulling out a small device that makes you sweat in an entirely new way. She begins to exaggeratedly struggle to free herself, keeping an eye on the undead monstrous hound as it begins to circle the group, still focused almost entirely on yourself. It blasts the group with frost magic once more, to the tune of a large number of cries of pain and frustration. The commander seems to have escaped, and also spots the newly made blind spot directly behind it. As it begins to close in on you, she darts forward, climbing up its back, stuffing the device under the helmet before she's tossed across the room. She groans but you can still see the feral smile on her face as the creature turns back to you.

As it closes, you feel the raw surge of magical energy from inside of it. Something violently opposed to the undead magic animating it. Its eyes shift from the pale blue glow frost magic to intense red as fire erupts from under its collar, streaks of flame blasting out as the incendiary magic consumes everything under the armor. The amazons begin to calm down, a few taking up guard position at the door, not that you feel much magic shifting around as the entire troop rests and the healers get to work. That was terrifying.

As funny as that would be maybe it would be better if 'bolter' meant something in universe so that it's not a pure fourth wall break.

Thank god that's finally over. I'm not sure what the item the commander used but I'm both thankful and wished she pulled it out earlier. Regardless, I pull out a waterskin and begin chugging it down, as I return to the group, panting from the high intensity run I just had.
