the guards didn't stop you and as you walked out the doors shut behind you, you find that you where underground, with an obvious tunnel, leading the way forward, a glint of light shining in the distance ahead of you

Gulping a bit nervously, Samantha slowly headed on up, wondering what might lie in wait for her up above.

what greeted you when you got outside was far different from what you'd seen in pictures in your time growing up in the vault, you had to shield your eyes from the bright light of day. As far as you could see the world was a desolate wasteland, there was little vegetation, and most of what there was, was brown and twisted, the sole, building you could make out, -an old gas station- looked to have been untouched for the last 200 years, and it had at least partially collapsed, there where no immanent signs of life, but at least according to your pipboy, there was no significant radiation to worry about for the time being

"Well, might as well check it out and log it as the first thing I find." Samantha said with a shrug after she spent a few minutes getting partially used to the sunlight. Once she was sure she could look around without being blinded, she went ahead strolled over to give it the once over

the place was desolated the structure unstable, but to your surprise you did find signs of life, it looked like at some point relatively recently someone had set up camp in there there was a filthy mattress and some empty cans, along with several fruit that you didn't recognize that seemed to still be okay. longing around a little more you found that some of the contents of the shelves remained including various food items, which must now be 200 years old

"I wonder if any of these are still good…" Samantha pondered to herself as she looked over the 200-year-old prepackaged food that was still on the shelves. She picks up one of the odd looking fruits and holds it up to her pipboy, curious to see if it's radioactive or not. If it turned out to not be full of rads, she would go ahead and take an experimental bite out of it.

it was hard to tell if the boxed food was any good, but the fruit seemed to be okay, it was mildly irradiated, but not enough that it would cause significant harm in and of itself, if you ate enough if would likely begin to cause problems, and a radiation build up in your body would not be pleasant to deal with, and the threat of mutation being fairly unpleasant, it really wouldn't be a good idea to eat too much of this

Making note this was at least something to go with as a last resort, she goes ahead and finished the one she ate and gathers the rest up. She checks around for any sign of something that'd give a clue who had been there and, if she finds nothing, heads out and looks around for some high ground to examine her surroundings from.

there wasn't anything obvious laying around, so leaving was the obvious thing to do, there wasn't much for you there. in one direction you saw what might be a city in the other, there was road stretching off into the distance

Spotting the city, Samantha decided to pull her pipboy up to see if it could tell her anything about the area immediately around her.

your pipboy only showed a marker for the gas station and the vault, but the city was marked with Beaver, which was presumably what it had been called before the war

Samantha frowned, not recalling anything about the city called Beaver... but with nothing else to go on at the moment she went ahead and started out for it.

the road to the city seemed clear, initially, but you soon started to spot creatures off away from the road, there were a number of bloated flies about the size of a baseball, and you were fairly certain you spotted a radroach a few times too, you occasionally had trouble with them in the vault if one or other of the vault usually in the engineering section where some sections had earth or rock surrounding them for one reason or another.
as you neared the city you started to make out the state of ruin it was in, just like the gas station it had definitely seen better days, and there wasn't really any signs of life so far as you could see.

Keeping away from the radroaches and the strange bloated flies, Samantha occasionally hid behind cars along the road to wait for them to pass before continuing on. As for the city, she looked to her Pipboy again to keep an eye out for any spike in radiation.

the area seemed relatively stable, though any water you came across on your way seemed to be at the least slightly radioactive, but it seemed for the most part that the radiation was safe. as you neared the city you saw no more signs of life than you had beforehand, though as you passed a few places the pipboy added them to the map, a school and an old rangers station and a park simply called 'main street park', meaning presumably you were on main street

"Well... so far, just some bugs and animals... no people..." Samantha said, frowning a bit as she said "I'll be kind of disappointed if I don't find anyone."

it wasn't long before you stumbled across people, but they didn't look friendly, fortunately, they hadn't spotted you yet. there was a mix of men and women, they were in a small camp made from scrap, by a wall made out of old fences, wood, and tires, the bottom the fence had a row of makeshift spikes large enough to run a person through, these made from pipes, or shards of metal,

Frowning as she spotted the group, she decided for the moment to make a note on her pipboy about them and their location, then tried to find away around them. The fact they didn't look friendly, from their gear to the rather spikes outside their walls, left her feeling it'd be best to avoid them.

fortunately, you could go around they're camp easily enough, and managed to do so without getting spotted, but it didn't set a great impression of the outside, what if everyone was like that. As you move on you spot a building on the outskirts that looked like they'd been smashed by something huge, but soon enough another wall this one looked more inviting, it even had signposts to the entrance

Unsure if she ever wanted to find out what could have smashed that, Samantha stayed away from that but once she saw signposts, she hummed and started moving to follow their directions.
