The hum of the Vertibird's engines whirred on, having droned into mere background noise after hours of this flight. It had been a long journey to Fort Worth, but it was nearly over. The Brotherhood Chapter in Texas had limited contact with your own and it was far from the first branch to try and secure a foothold in that state. However previous attempts had failed, and while this one was going stronger than most prior attempts, it was more than happy to welcome the aid from your branch in helping secure itself. So you were transferred over in part of your Elder's continued attempts to reunite the Brotherhood of Steel branches scattered across America. You knew very little about the situation over in Texas. Most of the power seemed divided between the Texas Rangers - a law keeping group that seem tied to the origins of the Dessert Rangers that eventually joined the NCR, and a loose coalition of Brahmin Barons still holding out on the NCR in an attempt to keep hold of their power.
Your escort, Paladin Jay Decker, stands in front of you. Clad in a full suit of powerarmor and armed with a Gatling laser, he certainly gives off the impression of a strong protector, although doesn't make much for conversation. Whether out of stoicism, professionalism or just a general lack of interest, Paladin Decker has said the bare minimum since assigned do your protection.
The pilot that was flying you to Fort Worth was the exact opposite, however.
"First time at Fort Worth, Ma'am?" chirps up the pilot, her voice cutting through the white noise over the Vertibird's coms for over the several dozenth time that trip. "Don't let the size fool you. It looks impressive enough, but there's shit all to do around and we're quite frankly a bit under stocked. We're running mostly on tech recovered from previous Brotherhood expeditions into Texas, so we've got one fusion core for every two suits of power armor. Or something to that effect. Your bodyguards probably got the best gear in the entire state. Wish his people skills matched..."
"Keep to your station, Journeyman Knight Mayer." was the only response Decker gave before returning to his standard silence.
"Keep to your station, blablahblah" Mayer aped in a whinney tone. "...Oh, crap, were the coms on for that?"
The Paladin only gave a slight grunt as a response, which elicited laughter from the pilot before she carried on talking. "Well passengers, if you disregard safety protocol and poke your head out the side of the Vertibird, to the left you'll see in the distance the town of Arlington. Closest town to the Fort Worth area worth visiting. Near enough to base you don't get many Muties running around, but far enough away that no Senior or Elder is going to bother you. They've got bars with booze and plenty of civvies ready to spend their caps on as many drinks as it'll take for them to have a shot with a Brotherhood girl. We should head there together sometime, Ma'am."
It didn't take much longer for your Vertibird to start coming in on the close to Fort Worth. Knight Mayer called in your arrival over the com. "Fort Worth Approach, this is Xiphos One, requesting permission to land, over."
Response didn't come immediately. After a few moments of radio silence, Mayer repeated her message and a gruff voice came over the line. It sounded slightly distorted, as if fighting through an extra layer of static than normal to get through the coms. "We read you, Xiphos One. Proceed to the landing area."
"Thank you, Fort Worth Approach, we'll be right with you. Save a cold one for me, will yah?" Knight Mayer said, before switching off her connection to the base. "Shit..."
The Virtibird jostled as Mayer pulled a sharp U-turn.
"Knight Mayer, expain yourself!" Paladin Decker demanded.
"I don't know how it is up in the Chapter you two are from, but around here we're pretty damn careful about double checking everyone's clearance. I usually spend more time asking to land then I do actually flying. Fort Worth is compromised. I don't know if its the entire Fort or just the Approach, but I'm not risking flying my baby right into enemy hands."
"That's not your call Knight. If the Brotherhood is under attack, it is our duty to protect-"
"Bite me, Paladin. I'm transporting a boot-licker and a glorified guard-dog. Not exactly the strike team for a rescue opp!"
Paladin Decker growled before turning his attention to you. "Ma'am, this is your call to make. What do we do?"
