Fortunately for you, you manage to find something... Unfortunately it's a dire bear. Growing far larger than a regular bear at nearly two tons, it dwarfs even the umber hulks in raw power. To make it worse... it has spotted you and is charging right at you with a rabid fury common to dire creatures.

I dart to one side, hoping to use my smaller size against it as I swing my war hammer in a defensive stance, hoping to keep it between us. If I can get a lucky hit on a limb, I'll do so, but I want to not attempt to trade blows with something this phenomenally large.

Roll 8
Luck is not with you, as though to manage to dodge its first blow, the shockwave it slamming down with its weight throws off your balance and your hammer goes wide. It sets up for a powerful sweep, but given its reach your not sure if you can strike and dodge.

I leap out of the way, panicking and throwing a wall of hellfire at it, this thing is far too powerful to be stuck fighting in close range. Maybe if being on fire distracts it, I can get some damage in, but not if it's ready to box me.

Roll 11
The wave of fire engulfs it and it lets out a roar of pain, jumping to the side in order to escape from the fire. The stench of burnt hair and flesh hangs heavily in the air the majority of its fur has been seared off. Not that that is enough to stop a dire animal, much more a dire bear. Still this was an opening you weren't planning on wasting. Quickly you step forward with your hammer.
Roll 19
The strike goes true, striking it directly in the jaw and a loud crack rings out as it snaps twisting the beast's head sharply . Any normal creature would have been rendered unconscious if not dead from the whip lash, but it not only remained standing but even let out a truly blood curdling roar through its what fragments remain of its mouth.

Goddam Scarlett, things were getting risky there.

Having wrecked its jaws with my latest strike, I'm feeling a bit more capable from before, leading in with a sharp jab with the head toward the shattered remains of its mouth, hoping to drive some of it deeper, or possibly cause it to joke on its own blood before I dart away. If I can't get a lucky blow in otherwise, I'm hoping I can let the severe facial trauma slow it down for me to pick it off later.

As you thrust forward it makes a quick slash with its claws and you exchange blows. Luckily your mail prevents it from gutting you but does little to soften the impact as you hear a rib snap before you are once again flung a good distance away. It looks like despite the grievous injuries it is still quite capable of fighting, and very much intents to as it lumbers towards you to close the distance once more.

Fuck this. I reach out with the now familiar shadow ability, binding it down to ground, hoping to grab its hind legs first and cause it to sprawl out. Once it's immobilized, I approach from a blind side and go to work with my hammer. If I have to bend over take a cock in the ass, I'll do it to keep my powers up and running, but this fighting fair bullshit will be the death of me.

You manage to bind it but you take quite a bit of power doing it, so you very well might need to. Still you finally manage to kill the damn thing.

I'm exhausted and lean on my hammer before I finish recovering. Yes, I will have a few full charges of magic to do that sort of thing with, as is I'm almost completely tapped out. And throwing knives I think. Yes, I need many things if I'm going to be trying this stuff alone. Maybe I can find a hunter or something to join me? Either way, I need to get this carcass back to them so they can eat it and I can hopefully bring back a few petrified people. [Did you see anyone that was worth grabbing? A healer or anything?] I ask Astaroth.

[There was someone who caught my eye. Not sure if she's a healer, but she did have a good aura that would be a great convert.] She mentions offhandedly.

After you return to the beholder, it exchanges for an equal weight of iron ore.

I transport the ore back to my cart, and look at the time of day. The encounter with the dire bear has me spooked, and I don't want to be staying out here if I can help it. I want to return with what I have right now, and look to fully stocking up. Maybe I can get started on this religious thing? Astaroth mentioned that's a good way to build up power.

I like the idea that she thought she was hot shit and then the Dire bear arrived and said, 'no, sit down.' and proceeded to absolutely wreck her. While I don't think she's quite ready for using her pussy, I do think she's a lot more willing to give out a few hand jobs.

That might have very well happened should she not used her power. My version of dire animals are scary as they don't feel fear, nor pain, often fighting until they literally just fall over dead, all while being much larger and stronger then their regular counterparts.

Kind of funny how she was almost disappointed that Paul didn't fuck her during the bath scene while now being very guarded of it. All she needs is a few orgasms and she'll be open to it again.

You make fine time to return to town, entering before the sun began to set behind the mountain range. You could either drop the ore off at the blacksmith or perhaps leave that for tomorrow.

Best to drop it off now. It might even give me a chance to look around and see if there's anything I could use to defend myself from range with. I'm far from an expert with bows of any kind, but it couldn't be that hard, could it?

As you pull up, the blacksmith initially starts to sigh until he realizes what you're dragging and the sudden change to shock causes him to chock and cough for a moment, before regaining his composure... sort of. In disbelief he notes, "You know, I didn't actually expect you to bring me... well any to be honest, but certainly not this much."

"Yes well, I managed to salvage a large number of tools as well, although I don't know if they're still usable. The mine itself hasn't been cleared, and I don't think there's enough manpower here to do so. I struck a deal instead. Now, I need to see about more weapons." I tell him, hoping he'll let me look over what he has or can build.

"Nothing you can't reforge," He says looking over them, though he raises an eyebrow at the 'struck a deal' line, but decides against looking the gift horse in the mouth, "So what do you want in exchange for this? I hardly have enough gold on hand to buy this stock outright."

"Access to the forge for one, and preliminary processing of materials. I can handle a great deal, but there's only so much I can handle at a time." I'm debating the various things I could do. With the mail shirt, I could go a while without improving it, but I'll need more weapons and armor for myself. "I will be forging armor for myself, and likely weapons as well, but I would like to see what you have now to see if I can repurpose any of it."

As you touch your mail shirt you realize that several links are broken from the strike that angry bear landed on you. It certainly is better then nothing, but against the things that actually threaten you, it's probably not sufficient. "Hmm..." He mumbles, eyeing you suspiciously. Certainly a literal ton of ore being handed over so cheaply isn't common... especially with the massive shortage going on, so he's clearly expecting you to have an ulterior motive though is having difficulty figuring it out. Still he agrees and shows you his stock. None of the weapons compare to your magical hammer, as all of them are mundane, but of decent quality. The armor on the other hand, you find some proper chain mail should you wish to upgrade from just a shirt, and even a partly made suit of plate.

I lay claim to the proper chain mail for now, but also request the plate armor if it can be adapted for my form. I'm willing to do some of the work on the armor, which should keep costs down. "I don't suppose you could make a steel bow?" I wonder out loud. Crossbows have metal bands, but with my strength, I should be able to bend it purely by hand. "I'd also like a belt or two of throwing knives." I mutter, giving the weapons another once over, not looking for something that competes with my hammer, but for something I could use to throw, or possibly a dagger to compensate for close range. "I can probably bring another load of raw ore to finish paying for the armor, although it probably won't be quite as big, but we'll see. If that is all agreeable, we should be good to move on from here."
